Why Marry?? Since the act of Marriage DOES NOT solidify the relationship...why does our society do it...other than the Tax Breaks??...and Health Benefits?? The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them. -- Mark Twain.

It's a tradition that is ever-so-slowly becoming outdated. It's old-fashioned, and doesn't cater to us as much as it did to people in the past. Kind of like the effect that Jesus supposedly had on the human race (whether or not he actually existed). Less and less people are "followers"... and as time goes by, less and less people will apply it to their lives. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

Marriage makes no sense for a man. If marriage were a business deal, you would never do it. The risk is far too great for a man. YOu can lose damn near everything financially if it doesnt work and in the US it is a more than 50% chance of it not. Then if there are kids, you wont get them. In fact, you'll have to pay to see them. As the Kid's Dad said in the basement scene: "Never get married."

I guess that wasn't much of an answer to the question... the majority of people are doing it for the comfort of a commitment. People are doing it sooner as well; before they realize their "love" was only fascination, and they failed to get to know their spouse better before taking the vows. There's less respect for the concept. I do believe in true love, but it's much rarer than we want to believe. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

You marry so that you can't run away when the going gets tough. Granted, nowadays you can still run away, but the idea is to close the exits so that you the two of you can deal with your demons--each other. Fear is the mind-killer.

Just a thought,
maybe the idea of being part of a marriage is like deciding to devote your life to something greater than yourself. I do think that marriage is kind of an antiquated deal, and I have spent a lot of time wondering what would possess a person to marry. Even so, if I make the effort to think about marriage without prefacing it with the question "what's in it for me?", I start to think that maybe it's not even about me, but about making a life out of devotion to the love of ~other people~, and the work that's involved in creating something positive. Being a part of the community as a person that can make commitments and keep them, make children and love them, and make an example of how to live within something beautiful and be happy with the gifts that I've been given and have shared. Again, it's just a thought. I don't think marriage is for everyone, I'm not married. But these reasons (in my opinion), are probably good enough to consider devoting a life to it.
