Joaquin Phoenix was great in Walk The Line. Too bad he has such problems in his personal life... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

ganja & hess (1973) 4/5 - atmospheric & weird to the point of being obscure, almost impenetrable (at least on a first watch), but i still enjoyed it massively. i liked the droning soundtrack with its occasional abrasive outbursts in particular.

I joined a Secret Movie Club and they screen classics at indie theaters in LA - either at 11:00am or midnight (depending on the content) - this week the midnight show is "Purple Rain"
So last Saturday I saw (for the zillionth time) in 35mm:

listen up philip (2014) 3.5/5 arrogant writer goes out of his way to alienate everyone. very much in the alex ross perry wheelhouse, at least of what i've seen, of bratty, childish adults navigating their slightly more difficult than they probably ought to be lives. personally, i can't get enough of this stuff.

Old Maid (1939) Starring Bette Davis, George Brett, Donald Crisp, & Miriam Hopkins, Jane Byran
One of the masterpieces made in the most prolific year from American Motion Pictiures. 1939.
On her wedding day Delia (Miriam Hopkins) learns her 1st fiancee (who hadn't been heard from in 2 years) returns home from the Civil War, Clem (George Brett). Charlotte (Bettie Davis) goes to the train station to tell Clem that Delia is marring another. Jarred by this news Clem is devastated and Charlotte seeks to comfort Clem. Soon after Charlotte discovers she's pregnant, with Clem's baby. Its a story about betrayal, secrets, longing, jealous, resentment, and reconciliation.
Bettie Davis acted her ass off. The last 5 minutes of the movie, Davis melts your heart... when her newly wedded "niece" Tina (Jane Bryan) acknowledges and kisses Aunt Charlotte on the cheek, right before Tina steps into a carriage embarking on a new life.
Four Stars ****

One of the few Bette Davis movies I haven't seen yet. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I mean, I like the premise of the movie and what its aiming for. But somehow, translating it into acting came off a bit awkward in some parts. My bf liked it though, so who knows? Maybe its only me.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) Despite a great cast featuring Dame Judi Dench, Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer, I found it lacking in storyline and character development department. Plus, Kenneth's moustache and accent was really, really distracting. I preferred the 1974 version because it had more substance. I give this a 2.5 out of 5

Wasn't there a serious clash between Bette & Miriam Hopkins behind the scenes?

Wow, you'd think with such a great cast and Agatha Christie plot that they could have done better. I saw the original last weekend and it's still a good film. BTW the best Hercule Poirot is the one on the BBC/PBS. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

===== [Edited 3/22/18 20:21pm] Ah I see. I think I remember hearing Bette referring to her as a “crazy bitch” in the documentary “Stardust”. Bette is also good friend with her sister too, Olivia De Haviland. Which is hilarious.
