Insult or Compliment

Have you ever been in a situation where you are genuinely unsure of whether or not someone is paying you a compliment or just making fun of you?

Here's an example. I was watching the Graham Norton show tonight with my fiancé and my cousin and Kylie Minogue was on the show as a guest. As a joke, my cousin said "there's Emma's favourite singer", knowing full well that I really don't like Kylie Minogue. Every year my cousin buys me a Kylie Minogue calendar and every year it goes in the bin. So when she said "there's Emma's favourite singer" my response was a playful "Fuck off". After explaining the situation to my fiancé, he said that in about 25 years, I'll look just like her. He framed the sentence as if he was paying me a compliment, but I don't feel what he said was particularly complimentary, especially in light of the conversation we had literally just had.

I didn't want to push the issue any further so I didn't really question him too much on it but now that he's gone to bed and I'm up watching a crap movie on my own, my mind began to wander and wonder what he meant. Perhaps I'm just tired and in need of sleep.

Regardless, just curious if any of you guys have had similar situations where you weren't sure if someone was complimenting you or taking the piss. Surely I'm not the only paranoid weirdo here??

That's a tough one. I really don't know who she is or why you don't like her, but I see she's 49 and I'm seeing a touch of that hollywood plastic surgery look, but for the most part she falls under the heading of being ideally attractive.

Why don't you sit him down and talk to him. Ask what he mean't by what he said. Rather than assume, ask him. Open communication is key to a successful relationship/marriage.

I took your advice and he said it wasn't meant as a compliment or an insult. He said he genuinely believes that in about 25 years I will look like her.

It wasn't quite the answer I was looking for but I suppose I don't really know what answer I was looking for. Although if he thought that it was a bad thing he wouldn't have asked me to marry him, right?

LOL. I did that but it backfired on me. He actually welcomed the comparison. I even reversed the roles and said that Justin Beiber would look like him in 25 years but that didn't seem to bother him.

I haven't seen how she looks now but when she first came on the scene she
was pretty. I don't see how it can be an insult. Have that conversation with him.

I love Kylie. It doesn't sound like a compliment but some people say things they don't mean when they are told f-off.
What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

She is super skinny and I believe just as sexy. In a sexy older women way..hey maybe that was a compliment?? as Kylie is cougar and he said it would take time. She's small, sexy and has a big mouth. Love her.

Yeah, as I said in one of the earlier posts, he says it's not intended as a compliment or an insult. He says he was just making an observation. But just to clarify, I didn't tell him to fuck off. I told my cousin to fuck off. And considering I let her live with me rent free, I think I'm well within my rights lol.

It's a long story but the gist of it is that she's not part of happy memories from my childhood. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Not that this is important or anything but in fairness, when it comes to talent, whether it be musical or artistic, he is definitely lacking. But then again, so is Justin Beiber lol. But I know where XxAxX is coming from.

One of the problems with the world today is that nobody knows how to let shit go.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
