London - Police offered a reward of £5000 on Friday to find who was responsible for desecrating the corpse of a 65-year-old Muslim cancer patient with strips of bacon.

The family of Habiba Mohammed, 65, from London, said they were still in a state of shock three months after staff in a hospital mortuary discovered her body covered with rashers of bacon.

Police opened a race crime investigation, interviewed about 40 hospital staff, and pored over closed-circuit TV images, but no one has yet been charged.

"This is a particularly grotesque act which has outraged the family as well as the whole community," detective chief inspector Tony Hester said.

One member of the woman's family, who asked not to be identified, told BBC News she felt "emotionally raped" when told of the grotesque discovery a day after the woman died on January 17.

It is strictly against the Muslim religion to touch or eat pork, and the woman's family, who do not want to be identified, have been left deeply traumatised. - Sapa-AFP

It reminded me of an incident a few years back in Luton, where someone got a pigs head and stuck it on top of the local mosque and it had to be demolished and rebuilt because of it
