License To Be A Bitch (workplace fuckery)

So my friend/roommate comes home today in a really bad mood. He works for a major national eyecare provider. He is in the call center and takes in-bound calls from doctors and customers.

A customer calls today, already with an attitude. The customer, from Blue Cross, had lenses made and wanted them put into Ray-Ban frames he purchased directly from Ray-Ban. He wasn't happy with the results. This was the ensuing conversation.

"Sir, were your lenses were sent to Ray-Ban?"

"Yes, but I don't like the frames."

"You don't like the Ray-Ban frames themselves, not the lenses."

"That's what I said. I don't like the fucking frames I bought from Ray-Ban."

"You need to call Ray-Ban about that. That is not something we can take care of for you."

"Well, I know that what is the fucking number to Ray-Ban?!"

"Sir, we are not directly associated with Ray-Ban. You should call wherever you bought them from."

"You know, I hope one of your kids grows up and murders seven or eight kids at a school shooting!"

:::click:::

My friend was almost in tears. He went to his boss, as the calls are recorded. He told her what happened. She later pulled the call and listened. Even she got upset. Unfortunately, the customer never got to the point where my friend could pull his information up on the computer. But there is a call log and a caller ID number. The boss is investigating to find out who this asshole is and why he did what he did.

WTF is wrong w/ folks?! Who would say that to another person???

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

My friend used to work in Eircom, Ireland's biggest telephone and broadband provider, and some of the things that was said to him over the years would actually drive a person to murder. I'd never be cut out for that line of work. I'd end up finding the persons address and going to their house, where I'd likely do something that would lead to me being arrested.

Some of the things that my friend has heard over the years include:

"I hope you die from cancer"
"I hope your children are all stillborn"

And there's been worse than that. He was also threatened multiple times when customers told him they'd be waiting outside for him after work. Nobody ever followed through though and he's a big guy so if they did, he'd probably kill them on the spot but it's still a stupid thing to say to someone who's trying to help you.

And the thing is, these things were all said by people with very minor problems. The one who said she hoped his children were stillborn was complaining about a 2 euro price increase which she had been advised of a month prior.

All this just confirms my theory that most humans are just horrible people.

Wow. I've also done that kind of work, but it's never been that bad. Sometimes people get angry, but often they will say something like "I know it's not your fault, but..." I think people who get so upset are people who know they're wrong. That guy knew he should be calling Ray-Ban and didn't want to admit it. And then he gets angry. But how somebody can get so angry as to say something like that is beyond me.

People become very bold and turn into assholes when they're on the phone or internet. Tell your friend not to give it another thought. Don't let the assholes ruin your day, there are far too many of them.

People can be total dicks. But its just a job, nothing to get hung about so probably overreacting and finding out where the call in dicks live in prder to track them down and kill them might be taking the job just a wee bit too seriously. Your pal should let that shit go as its clearly not a high level post to begin with and not worth the trouble of stress

No, they're not. That's a bullshit line made up by a bullshit store owner.

The best comparison is that this customer ordered pizza from Dominos, and later called Wendy's to complain because they didn't like their food.

So no, the customer is not always right. Sometimes the customer is a cunt with no other reason than to be a cunt. It's the same as giving someone the benefit of the doubt. Oh hell no!

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Cus or Cuss as in to use profanity... it is a play on the first part of "customer." Like customers make you want to cuss...

The world is full of childish, uncaring, self centered motherf'ers. Straight up. Just because his sorry ass was having a bad day, and wasn't willing to take responsibility for his own personal problems, he decided to take it out on your friend? I can't stand people like that. The world is better off without them.

Anyway, i hope your friend will be OK, and doesn't let it get him down any further than it already has.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

He's good. It was easily one of the worst moments he'd ever had on the phone.

Record all calls. Use a program that not only records the call, but records the caller's information. Then report callers like that to the appropriate authorities.

It might not stop some other idiot from doing this, but it will absolutely stop THAT idiot from ever doing it again.

This fucking place he works for actually records the calls, then makes him sit down at the end of the week to go over them w/ him. He's one of the most professional people I've ever known, great work ethic, excellent on a call, and they're still trying to coach him sometimes. It's ridiculous. But all that aside, that's how his boss was able to hear the call. It was recorded and they could pull it up to listen to. Unfortunately, he didn't get far enough to pull the customer's 411 up on the computer. But I told him there is a caller ID # somewhere they can find. But the person never gave their name or insurance information.

The union at his work sides w/ the management instead of sticking up for the employee so he doesn't think anything is going to be done about it per se.

check with your state's laws. it is illegal in some states to record without notifying them. In some states, you do not have to. One problem if someone borrows your phone you should deactivate it.

but in this case (in the OP) they did record it but there is no crime.

Of course. You have to have a message at the beginning that says all calls are recorded. Then you're good.

If you can't report them, you can still write them a letter and tell them that any such calls will be considered harrassment, and then you CAN report them.

It has to be said that the caller didn't do anything illegal. What he said was stupid and hateful, but... There's no laws against being stupid and hateful...

Stick up for him how, exactly? The union might stick up for him if he got disciplined (wrongly) because of this, but he didn't. There's nothing the management or the union can do about a caller being a dipstick. shrug

The union comment was part of a larger statement about the company in general. I know the union can't do anything about the phone call per se.
