John Mahoney, star of television, movies, and theater, died Sunday from complications due to brain and lung cancer. He was 77.

Mahoney didn't actually get his start in acting until the late 1970's, when he was a regular in the Steppenwolf Theatre troupe in Chicago with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. He branched out into Hollywood, landing memorable toles in the movies Moonstruck, Say Anything, and Barton Fink. But he is most remembered for his role on the television series Frasier, where he played Martin Crane, the gruff, blue-collar former detective father of his otherwise high-brow sons Frasier and Niles Crane.

Loved his character on Frasier and that worn out chair that took center place in his son's posh suite. RIP John Mahoney.

Loved Martin, great contrast to the characters of Niles & Frasier.
