The Shape of Water (spoilers) ...OK, I just saw it.
My opinion of the movie is....well, it's ET, the adult version. The storyline is not new, we've seen it a hundred times before - the whole thing is like, a mix of ET, Beauty and the Beast, maybe a little Mannequin or something, and a whole lot of other movies.....? The story wasn't developed enough in the beginning - we needed to see HOW and WHY she falls in love with it, which they didn't show. Instead, spoiling it with all the Government and spy bullshit (which I didn't fully get). ....and, also, in 2017, shouldn't the creature have been CG, instead of a guy in a suit???!! In fact - DOESN'T IT LOOK A LOT LIKE JAR JAR BINKS???!! With all that being said, the cinematography and music were still brilliant. But it was the central psychology of someone who's just a toilet cleaner, who escapes from her mundane life by doing.....all this, that was not explored enough.
Any opinions? |

You should post this in the "Rate the Last Film You Watched" thread as well.
Shape was my favorite movie of 2017. You make a lot of good points, but the creature looks nothing like Jar Jar; I think he's based on the Creature from the Black Lagoon, which came out around the time Shape is set.
I think we learn quite a bit about the main characters' backstories and what drives them to do good or ill, and that's because of the fantastic performances all the way around.

Yep.
Also, he doesn't look like Jar Jar Binks, at all, In fact, if you dig into the other thread, or do some del Toro research, you'd see the Asset looks an awful lot like Abe Sapien from the Hellboy franchise (both are pictured in the other thread - I put them there).
By the way, most movies aren't that original, really. Love stories, spy flicks, romantic comedies, mystery, horror - they all have a formula. And no one fucked E.T., not even close. http://prince.org/msg/100/451221

OK you need to stop. LOL
PS I meant to add the interesting notion that the Asset & Abe Sapien are in fact related, or are the same species, which puts The Shape of Water squarely in the Hellboy universe somewhere.

Any opinions? I thought the movie was great when I seen it first but I'm rewatching all the Oscar nominated movies again to refresh my memory and I'm not as enamoured with it as I was at first. One thing I strongly disagree with you on is the lack of CGI in the creature. Completely CG characters NEVER look good. Great makeup effects will always look more realistic than great CG because they ARE real. That's why there's so much praise given to the new Jurassic Park movies because they use practical effects wherever possible. They look better on screen and they're a lot better for actors to act with. |
