gabi on the roof in july (2010) -3.5/5 struggling artist-type's chaotic life gets more chaotic when his younger sister comes for a visit. all of these people are awful. childish, petty, selfish, & shallow, and if i met any of them, i'd probably want to get away from them within 10 seconds. but i laughed five or six times, genuine laughs, and i don't really think there's arguing with those results. if you're laughing, you can't really be having a bad time. & the score is very pleasant at times.

The Post - 3.5 stars out fo 5. A timely movie but slightly marred by it's messages being hammered in ways that made it seem less realistic. For example, there is a wonderful feminist message here but the scene when the Graham character leaves the courthouse to a street lined with young women all admiringly looking at her was over the top. Back in the day, she was never seen as some type of leader of the feminist movement, and these young women hardly looked like any of the "radical feminists" of the time who might have been inclined to drive to DC to see their supposed hero. A couple of speeches about the free press also didn't seem to flow naturally in the dialogue even if I agreed with the message. On the other hand, I was impressed that I hardly recognized the ever recognizable Tom Hanks as he seemed to meld perfectly with his role.

Call Me By Your Name. 4.5 stars. - Thanks to the 5 star reviews here, I went to the theatre rather then wait for it on demand tv. Definitely worth it, with the chemistry between the leads, the beautiful Italian settings, the unexpectedly deep father son dialogue towards the end, and music by my fave Sufjan Stevens.

I saw The Philadelphia Story on the big screen yesterday. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart...and an Oscar-winning script. It was divoon. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i had a strongly negative reaction to the post, more so than you. its heart was in the right place, clearly, but, more than in most of his recent movies, spielberg's obviousness was at his most obvious.
4.5/5 for spotlight. | |

menashe (2017) 3.5/5 hassidic jewish widower in new york struggles to take care of his son while grinding against his restrictive religious traditions. interesting look into a world most of us have never seen, though the family drama itself is a bit ordinary.

I prefer this over Wonder Woman. Definitely the best movie from 2018 so far.
