As you can probably tell, English is not my first language. During the course of my long and still incomplete familirasization with the English language, I have come across some puzzling terms and expressions, like cockpit and,spotted dick. However, no term is more puzzling than "Good Friday".

What's so good about Good Friday?

Not only is it the day the "Son of God" is traditionally thought to have died on the cross, but in some parts of the world, they still close the bars. As if an event as traumatizing as the death of Jesus wasn't cause for a few, nerve-calming stiff drinks.

It seems odd that, of all the fridays of the year, this one would be called "good". Personally, my fridays are always fantastic. It's the mondays that sucks. Whoever ever had a good Monday?

I just want to know why it's called Good Friday.

There's nothing wrong with 'Good Friday'. You've obviously not heard of 'Crap Saturday' and 'Average Sunday'?

And what about 'Great Wednesday' and 'Well, that was okay I suppose Tuesday'?

That's the spirit. I know, but I've had a very catholic upgringing. I used to see nuns spread themselves on the floor and kiss it and I took part in the whole liturgy. It doesn't feel like a party day even after years of staunch atheism.
