I agree that "The Force Awakens" becomes worse every subsequent viewing but I liked it the first time I saw it... "The Last Jedi", however, gave me the same feeling "The Phantom Menace" and "Rogue One" gave me of pure grade A garbage...
And, honestly, I should have expected it to be crap... It seems every time a trailer comes out for a "Star Wars" movie and I like it then the movie itself is shit and when I hate the trailer then the movie is great... I thought the trailers for each one of these movies were fantastic only to be hugely let down by the movie itself...

I think Rogue One is actually a really good movie. I think it added greater weight to A New Hope. It showed the Rebellion didn't just boil down to six people.

TFA and TLJ have another big problem: they don't have Darth Vader at the center of the film, like the OT and the prequels did. SW geeks simply aren't as invested in what they see (hell, even what his Uncle and his Dark Master saw) as Emo Vader. Or the New New Hope, Rey.

I'm still a fan of TLJ but I understand the criticisms as I get further and further away from it. I still think it's more than worthy of the canon.

[Edited 2/1/18 16:02pm]

I enjoyed Rogue One. I think that is wasn't a 'continuation' movie like TFA was I was able to not compare it. It's just that the lead character was so bland. I mean did she ever have any other facial expressions than the one on the dvd cover?

.

And the characters over all, just did not endear me to them, outside of the droid. The samurai taking out storm troopers with a sword, not even a vibroblade just didn't get me.

.

But it was an enjoyable movie, that I didn't find fault with over all.

I love the Art of ___ movie books and I was given a gift card for Christmas in 2016 because the person did not buy it for me as a gift. And I remember just looking at the Art of Rogue One, over and over and it was just so boring. I even saw it in a sale bin at Marshalls for $15 and just did not care to put the money into it. There was nothing there as far as intrigue and background.

And there it t-i-s. Being a SW geek myself, I think the devoted fans have asserted ownership over this franchise from the minute it blew our minds 40 years ago (or 30, 25, etc.). TLJ put its finger on the real issue: can the fanboys and fangirls who have kept this phenomenon alive for 2 generations truly turn the page?

Thematically and, sadly, literally, the original Big Three can't stick around forever in the story. One of the three famously didn't want to.

But we fans, as a whole, have trouble accepting changes to the saga we love, and in some ways, the saga we built in our own minds.

There isn't a single movie in this saga that hasn't had plot holes, or defied the laws of science or common sense. We go to these movies with the saga we have, not the saga we wish we had. And the results since 2015 have overall been really good.

[Edited 1/2/18 10:52am]

It's not about changes, every sane minded fan would accept changes to further a story...
This is more about lazily written and simply uninteresting (new) characters next to uninteresting plot points just to give them something to do...
Also the disrespectful way older characters are written off, just to get rid of them so these new underwritten characters can take center spot, is just plain stupid and shows a lack of interest in or knowledge of these characters by the director/Kathleen Kennedy and Disney... It's painfully obvious these people don't like or care about "Star Wars" other than the money it makes...
I understand this whole "Star Wars" thing is a ploy to sell cheaply made toys but still, people were invested in these characters and their adventures... Now, not so much...
It's cool that there are some people who like this shit but they could have at least taken some effort in respectfully send off the characters that created the brand for the people who made the brand...

Well said in joint frustration

If Snoke isn't a Sith then how could he train Kylo to be an effective Dark Lord? Would he even be powerful enough? eek

I'm not fully convinced "Snoke"'s storyline is done.

There's still the Plagueis angle to play.

How did such a powerful Dark Side master just so happen to rise and seize power in the wake of Sidious' death? The Galaxy simply wasn't big enough for "Snoke" and Sidious. Perhaps Snoke IS Plagueis, and bid his time until Sidious' death to resurface, somehow.

There's the distinct possibility that Rey and Ben have to deal with him again. Or the rest of the Knights of Ren, organized by Hux to wage a coup against Ben.

Perhaps, like Rey's parents, Snoke is a red herring. But I'm not quite there yet.

Now there is the Darth Plagueis novel, which I love, but that is not considered canon anymore. We only have Palpatine talking about the story of darth plagueis the wise in Revenge of the Sith. In the novel Sidious clearly kills Plagueis.

But Plagueis was also working on ways to harness his life force into another body. But I don't think he succeeded. And Palpatine, knew of Plagueis' work spaces.

the Solo trailer may be on "Good Morning America" Monday. Some are saying the Super Bowl but I am thinking maybe not. GMA is owned by Disney so I am going with that.

Now it looks like there will be something during the SB (something short) followed the next day by the full trailer on GMA

I could relate to the band of misfits, who had no connection to any of the grand players of the Skywalker Saga. I liked the story and the overall cast, even if the lead wasn't overly charismatic. Vader definitely gave the story a needed jolt at just the right times.

It is funny how I can fall into the fantasy of the 'fan' art, even if the movie doesn't move me the same

I just saw it today (free passes too!). I loved every bit of it. The opening sequence with Po "calling" for Hux and waiting on hold - hysterical. There was a lot of comedy in it, but pretty much standard for a Star Wars film.

Now, when George Lucas was laying out the tragedy that was episodes 1-3, he made a statement that each movie echoes the other, like stanzas in a song - different words, but same rhythm. I saw a lot of that in this one. The "I see good in you", or "if you strike me down I'll become more powerful" from 4-6. Ren trying to get Rae to join him and rule together. The apprentice killing his emperor/master, etc.

Skywalker telling Ben Solo he failed him is kind of a double meaning because Luke may feel like he failed at being the best friend he could (youthful ignorance) with Ben Kenobi.

I also loved the throwback to Hoth, but on the salt planet, the door closing shut (a la Hoth when the sun was going down and Skywalker was still outside). Even BB8 messing with a panel near the end was a reminder of R2 trying to shut down the garbage crusher (same gear/circuit panel).

We enjoyed the whole thing.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Estimates show TLJ grossed $600M, down 33% from TFA but IIRC, Empire made only half of what A New Hope made.

Yeah, I was tracking TLJ against TFA and it was at about 71% now it is down to 67%. I expect it to end up with between 625 and 630 Million which will put it in 5th place of all time domestic.

Early on it looked like it would end up at #3 ($665ish) but it has slipped off more that TFA had. (I for one saw TLJ once--buying 4 tickets. When I saw TFA 4 times buying 8 total and RO twice (6 tickets).

Some are predicting a major dip in box office for Solo... which could put the breaks on both Rian Johnson's trilogy and the new film series by "Game of Thrones" producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as the new set series (several) in the works for the Disney streaming service.

Solo was in trouble from the jump after firing the directors. It's hard to go back and tell that story seeing that Harrison Ford was youngish when he took the role and it's hard to visualize anyone else in it.

If Solo crashes it could end the TV series but Benioff and Weiss are adept at getting people invested in new worlds. Plus there's hope for other one-offs that draw a lot of comparisons to the original cast. Obi-Wan, Vader and Boba Fett come to mind.

A Vader movie would make a ton of money.
