To that DiCaprio Statement, I wouldn't say he's overrated (I mean his portrayal of Arnie Grape and Howard Hughes proves otherwise). But he chooses the wrong movies. Because of the Oscar hunt, he probably turned down Vetter roles just to get the Oscar. I haven't seen The Revenant but he shouldn't have got the Oscar for that role. He is a great actor but he lately he's picking the wrong roles

He was really good in The Revenant though. I'd recommend you watch it. Maybe you'd agree that he deserved it? I think he should have won for Django Unchained too.

I thought his best performences were The Departed and Wolf of Wall Street ... both of those performances were better than The Revenant, in my opinion.

I agree that they were better than the Revenant, but I still think he deserved his win for it.
Off topic, but if you liked The Departed, I'd recommend the movie it was based on. Infernal Affairs. Starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung, it's much better than The Departed.

Infernal Affairs is fantastic ... easily the equal of The Departed. Sequel wasn't too bad either.

I can say I've seen most of these and most are not CGI based movies and a lot of them are damned good. I'd say he has challenged himself as an actor.

Leo has made some great movies. I think he's a good actor with a lot more good roles to come.

You haven't seen the movie, but don't think he should've gotten the Oscar?? WTF??

Maybe I put this wrong tho. Not saying that the Revenant wasn't Oscarworthy. But I think he got robbed before so I think The Revenant wasn't the best role to pick when you talk about oscarworthy roles.
I mean, Arnie Grape, Howard Hughes, Billy Costigan. Jordan Belfort. He deserved an oscar for those roles and didn't get them. And then he gets one for Revenant? Probably a good movie, but to me it seems like the Jury was like: "Meh, if we don't give him the oscar this time people go on a rant again, so let's just give him the oscar now!" I don't know. I as a fan was happy that he finally got his oscar, because the boy deserved it for so long now, but then on the other side I was like: "But was the role the right one?" Because he should've gotten one for the wolf of wall street tho. I was still disapointed about that, so I think that's why I'm conflicted when it comes to the revenant.

See my comment to EmmaG, I might have put this wrong.

Similar to how Martin Scorsese won for The Departed but didn't win for Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull or Taxi Driver. The Academy probably felt it was his time. Yeah, that could be one of the reasons Leo won for The Revenant. They probably felt it was his turn to win. Although I do think he deserved it too.

I didn't think that DeCaprio would last much past his late teens/early 20s but he impressed me with later performances in Blood Diamond, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, and J. Edgar.

I remember when it was questioned that he wouldn't last long because of his boyish looks that he'd never outgrow.
It's an interesting one, the problem is there aren't a lot of the quality scripts and level of filmmakers those actors had back in the day. Harvey Weinstein probably changed a lot of the Oscar-bait formula in the mid-90s as well, most actors now practice a different style and those dramatic films are more a compilation of Awards-night clips where the newer gen cry/scream/bang fists/hold their breath/look sad/etc on cue.
