Some great set pieces and musical numbers, but Stone and Gosling were lumbered with an awful script. They needed to come up with a much better story to hang the musical numbers off.
Plot was totally predictable. Stone essentially cheats on her current partner to get with Gosling, not exactly an endearing quality in someone. The inevitable dinner table break-up scene was one of the worst scripted scenes I've scene in years in a major studio movie, two actors just throwing cliches at each other.
Gossling's singing was the worst part of this movie, then the absence of African Americans was also pretty ignorant on the film maker's part. I did enjoy the movie even though I usually hate musicals. . The Jazz club was filmed in LA. It is located on the pier of Hermosa Beach. It's been there since the 50s and was known to feature acts like Miles Davis amongst other well-known musicians. . It's a great club to watch Jazz as it's in the round. http://www.thelighthousecafe.net/
If you're going to watch a Ryan Gosling movie then you should watch Drive or Blade Runner 2049. Both are much, much better than La La Land.
I've got my inner strength and sanity back. I am not going to watch any more Ryan Gosling movies - unless he's in "Expendables 4," in which case I hope he is expendable.

Thanks for the tip!
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
The ending is not obvious. The scene in the traffic is worth it alone. wow.
The ending is heartbreakin, i mean the way they stare at each other, the little bittersweet smile she gives at him, the sad look in his face. The ending is everything, without that ending the film wouldn't be the same.

Shame as it could have been a great film.
Indeed, the story was predictable and weak, not strong enough very generic.

I went into this movie planning to be meh with it. Then when i got there, it was almost sold out and i got a really bad seat and then i was ready to hate it. But then the music started. Very rare to hear music for the very first time and be like this is instant classic stuff. I had the soundtrack on Spotify by the time i got back in my car and was blasting it non stop for the rest of the month.
And like classic old-time Hollywood musicals, it's an incredibly charming movie.
I love the music, specially Another Day Of Sun and City Of Stars. More than being a great film in terms of storytelling is very magical kind of film. That's what it has, lots of magic.

I could sworn John Legend was in it ... maybe I dreamt it ...

...and John Legend was the famous and successful artist who wanted to give Gossling a break. Gossling just wanted to open a club for jazz artists because of his love for the music, it's not like he is ever deemed all that great himself.
