Insomnia

Well, I'm not really sure I have insomnia. But I'm having trouble making myself go up to bed when I know I need to go up to bed.

I've been working a night shift for a few weeks now, and I think that's what's got my sleeping all fucked up. It's not that I'm not tired. I guess I just feel weird about going to bed at 9 in the morning. The thing is, I didn't even end up going to work last night, and I *still* haven't been able to take my ass up to my bed this morning at a decent time.

It sucks.

I'm not sure if I intended anyone to discuss this or anything, but I felt like starting a thread, and I'm getting really irritated with myself not being able to go to bed.

Your body will never get used to that schedule. I worked the midnight (11 pm-7 am) shift one summer when I was in college and I never got used to it.
It messes up your whole day.

You got off easy then..for some who spend a considerable amount of time on night shift it can take up o a year or more to get their bio cyclical rhythms back in sync

well, my life is complete chaos this year...school, fulltime job and a 15 hour-a-week internship, so I think pure exhaustion helped me shift patterns...but when I have time off, I slide back to the overnite pattern...up till 8 am, sleep for 3 hours, etc... so I still have some residual effects...

I've always been the type to stay up all night and sleep all day. Maybe that's why working 10pm-7am (or a similar shift) for the better part of three years hasn't really bothered me much.

It's 5:15am this side of the world...

So yeah, I kinda have issues myself getting to bed and falling asleep when I should. I'm consistently bad at falling asleep...

I have to be awake in 4 hours time... so it would probably be a good idea to introduce myself to my bed pretty soon...

Read up on melatonin and how it works, because those articles contain alot of information on how your body reacts to daylight and chemically/physically why people are more inclined to sleep in the evening/darkness.

I drink Earl Grey decaf chamomile/peppermint tea before bed sometimes and it puts me to sleep.

Kava Kava (a dietary supplement) can make you sleepy too.

& get some super thick window blinds.

If that don't work, smoke a big fat J and hit a 5th of jack. Or an even cheaper route, chug a half a bottle of NyQuil. The room will spin for a couple min then youre out cold. smile

Maybe it's also coupled with the fact that we had to set the time forward an hour, Aaron.

I did a night shift for 5 years and you're so right, i was fucked up for more than a year after i came off it.I did a 'google search' on the long-term affects of working nights. It was quite alarming, i had to get out, though i miss that money!

if you're suffering sleep loss, get yourself a blackout blind, with curtains closed too, it turns night to day.

I used to be an insomniac as well, until I trained myself to NOT care how many hours of sleep I was going to get the next day. When you are worried about the next day and pressured to sleep to prepare for it, the anxiety prevents you from resting. I had to teach myself to give up caring, and then I was able to fall asleep easily at night.

You know I'm nocturnal naturally as it is, so I can generally go to bed around 9 AM with no problems. If I were to have to get to bed by 10 PM, though, I'd struggle immensely.

One thing I suffer from is waking up during the middle of the night. I haven't slept through a full night in a few years, and probably only 5 times in the past 10 years. Usually, I wake up at least 5 times during the middle of the night. I need to work on that.

I can relate to EVERYTHING you said there. And anxiety is a problem for me too, I think too much when I wake up in the middle of the night, for whatever reason. But the nighttime is when I'm at my best.

No wonder we click so well. My mind is too active at night to just sleep. I probably sleep BETTER during the morning and early afternoon hours, crazy as that may sound.
