close-up (1990) - recreates the trial of a man accused of impersonating an iranian film-maker, using the actual people involved. Sexton told me to watch this movie back in 2013, & i stupidly didn't listen to him. i haven't gone back to watch certified copy recently, but as it currently stands i would rate this as my favourite of the kiorostami films i've seen to date. completely engrossing both as a character study & a look into human motiviations, and as a commentary on the artiface of film & voyeurism. 5/5

some like it hot 3.5/5
sunset boulevard 5/5 i was a touch luke-warm on some like it hot - it was certainly entertaining, but i found it just a bit too slap-stick at times for my taste.
sunset blvd on the other hand was absolutely perfect for me, an incredibly enjoyable noir that flirted just the right amount with camp at times. |

I have yet to see Sunset Blvd. I know it’s a classic but somehow it’s evaded my peripheral vision when I’m on the Netflix or Amazon Prime. |

I am the Husband of the Year. And I will prove it to you.
The Houston Astros just won maybe the greatest World Series in history. I had two tickets to Game 5, which may have been the greatest game in World Series history. But did I go?
No!
I insisted that my son and my wife go. They did, and I watched it on TV.
Still not convinced I'm the husband of the year?
Mrs. RodeoSchro got the crud via Typhoid Mary a/k/a my Favorite Mother in Law, and has been under the weather the last few days. In addition to waiting on her hand and foot, I agreed to watch "Girls Trip".
ANY man that watches that with his woman deserves accolades.
This movie Sucks with a Capital S. It's not funny. It's gross. It's poorly-acted. It's pornographic. It's nonsensical. It's just B...A...D.
It's so bad that I don't even want to review it. I just want to dump on it. Everyone associated with this movie should publicly apologize to the entire world. Or at least to me. I could have easily lived my whole life in happiness without ever knowing what "Grapefruiting" is.
I was going to type some pithy reason to watch this, such as "You are a guy who left the toilet seat up and now you're wife is mad and insists that you watch this movie with her", but you know what?
Leave the toilet seat up. The wrath from that action is not anywhere near as bad as "Girls Trip".
Zero grapefruits.

The Some Like It Hot ending is hillarious, one the most touching, beautiful and at the same time funny endings i have seen so far. |

raw - 4.5/5 vegetarian veterinary student discovers her inner carnivore. not the first movie to equate sexual awakening & yearning for conformity with violence & blood-lust, but it absolutely hit all the right notes for me every step of the way. fantastically atmospheric, viciously brutal at times & containing one of the toughest, most squirm-inducing scenes i've seen in i don't know how long, but also very funny & satirical. reminiscent of body-horror era cronenberg & dario argento, & potentially my movie of the year.
I forgot that this came out this year! (was thinking I saw it last year for some reason) I really enjoyed this one too, and am now kind of itching to see it again. I loved the finger scene... talk about awkward...
Yes, indeed that scene is crazy as hell, but so is the whole damn movie. Such a weird movie. To me one of most shockin scenes was the one when the sister throw herself into a car passing by... and i did not expect that ending. |

Barbara (2012) - A doctor working in 1980s East Germany finds herself banished to a small country hospital.
I loved the quietly powerful performance by the excellent Nina Hoss. I can watch this movie over and over. 5/5

The Some Like It Hot ending is hillarious, one the most touching, beautiful and at the same time funny endings i have seen so far. “Some Like It Hot” holds a special place in my memory. I saw it for the first time maybe 17 years ago or so. Love Billy Wilder, thought of him and still think of him as one of the all-time greats, and love comedy of all sorts, but I was like you at best. I thought it was quite good, but couldn’t get my head around how it was considered such a classic. I was actually mad about it. LOL. I was too cynical in my youth. Took myself far too seriously, though I mostly tried to hide it. Then, for whatever reason (there’s still so much we don’t understand), about 5 years later I felt compelled to watch it again. This time I fell in love. A classic for me. No more obstinance from this jerk. At least not on this issue. |

Man with a Movie Camera (1929) - A man travels around a city with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling invention.
Best documentary ever? Possibly! I nearly stood and applauded in my living room when it was over. The MTV-like editing made it look incredibly modern--an influence on the new wave style of films later in the 60s for sure. And the new score by the Alloy Orchestra sent it over the top. 5/5

nashville (1975) sprawling movie that wanders all over the place, dozens of characters & stories that range from melodrama to political satire to comedy, but never feels even a bit uncertain or unfocused or artificial. in a way, it felt like all aspects of human existence could be found here. 5/5 |

I'm up to around 93. There are a few others I have seen, but it was either so long ago that I don't remember much if anything about them (Kieślowski's Three Colours) or I did watch once and was so bewildered that I felt a second viewing was mandatory before considering it being "seen" (Marketa Lazarová).
With all the movies from the list you've posted in this thread, I'm assuming you're ahead of me now.

the lady eve - 4.5/5 conwoman barbara stanwyck falls for her patsy henry fonda. i generally would do anything in the world other than watch something that approaches a romantic comedy, but there's no denying this had surplus charm and wit. i also think barbara stanwyck was very, very sexy.

the killing of a sacred deer - 4.5/5 - i was a bit lukewarm on alps, but otherwise i simply love yorgos lanthinmos's films. dogtooth is at the top of my century list definitely. i don't quite like the lobster as much (i thought the 1st half was much stronger than the 2nd), but i would still rate it very highly as well. killing... is still very recognizable as his style, particularly in the dead-pan delivery, but it's closer to a horror movie than the kind of absurdist comedy of the lobster, though there are several uncomfortably hilarious moments. it doesn't feel like it has the focus of the his earlier movies, the way they took on societal rules & family dynamics & romance, but i don't think it suffered from that at all. i thought it was a deranged riot & i absolutely loved it.

Coincidentally, I just bought the new Criterion transfer of Barry Lyndon at the November Barnes & Noble 1/2 price sale. I didn't realize it was that long.
I have five concerts in four nights this week so you have the advantage in free time. Over the weekend when things have calmed down, maybe I'll pull Chelsea Girls off the shelf. Although watching that necessitates being in a rather masochistic mood I would think.

amarcord - 4.5/5 like fellini's 8 1/2 + la dolce vita, this is filled with weird moments & delirious flights of fancy, but this has a sentimental, even heart-felt streak, something like a slightly pervy old guy revisiting his childhood memeories.
