Still in New Mexico. According to Gas Buddy and Facebook reports, gasoline availability starting in Ft. Worth/Dallas and going south is very sketchy.
My rule is: Don't go home until you know the gas stations have gas, and the grocery stores have groceries.
My wife's rule is: Go to U-Haul, buy a cargo carrier, and put some filled-up gas cans in it. All I can envision is me getting in some MAd Max-kind of war with people trying to steal my gas cans, LOL.
gas is a pain in the Dallas area... but I have gotten gas a since the long lines... i got some early in the morning with no problem (other than it is 20 cents more now). But at other times I have seen LONG lines! and stations with no gas.
Thanks!

Thanks for the updates Rodeo and UFO. Please keep them coming.
Will the people who don't know wtf they are talking about please stop with the misiformation and donate to the relief efforts if you haven't already? Hopefully you can afford to do so. Thanks.
I really hope you are not talking about me. I have my hurricane Phd from Katrina, after doing my undergraduate in the Caribbean. I've experienced/studied more about hurricanes than most people ever will. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all" |

I thought you were in NOLA? Karian did not hit NOLA... what happened was the title surge broke the levees thanks in part to Ray Nean mishandling funding and generally neglecting them and totally botching the before and after handling of the storm. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

So who won? Personally, I'm on your side. It's not going to be pretty going back, or smell very good either. I guess since the water receded fairly fast, you may be able to save the frig? That was a huge problem for us, thousands of them on the curb, ugh.
The other thing about carrying all that gas, your carrier is basically a bomb if anything runs into it. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all" |

My experience: I rode out a hurricane in Maryland (maybe 75), One in Alabama 76?. Floods in Key West (80) and Galveston 82, 2 hurricanes in Galveston maybe 83(slept through it) and 84 (I think that was mostly south of me)? I had a house full following both Katrina and Ike. I will put my experience up against anyone. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

Hi babynoz! I remember you live in Florida.
We got more to go before this season is over. Irma is a thing now. You'd think they could come up with some better names.

South Florida? OMG, please get out if you can. I just assumed your were in Pittsburgh because of all the Steelers love. I didn't know you were down there.
Please, please, please go to another state if it's at all possible. Let me know, and above all stay safe!

A cat 5 in the Eastern Caribbean does not mean it will be a 5 if it hits Florida. Vigilance is of course required. I evacuated the day before Katrina with a dog, a cat, 4 saxophones and a couple of guitars, and my mother's antique dishes. Never regretted it even though I didn't see my house for 6 weeks, or know the damage. Got power a few days after we got back. The I-10 underpass near my house was still flooded. No grocery stores, they stunk for miles- all the food was still in there with NO power all that time.
Last year I think it was the sexuality thread that got us through hurricane season, babynoz. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all" |

I'm bugging out by early Thursday if this doesn't look like it will weaken. I ain't trying to be no hero, believe me.
My son's company is sending him to another state to work for the duration. They will pay for the family to go if I can get off work in time. My youngest is being stubborn as usual.

Oh, ya, a storm can stall out far inland and wreak havoc. It doesn't even have to be a powerful hurricane. I was living in Albany, GA, well inland, during the one in '94 and lost my home. I will never forget water literally rushing down the streets as I grabbed my kid and what I could stuff into a laundry basket and bailed. It wasn't the hurricane; it was the stall and subsequent deluge. It was two weeks before residents were allowed back in, and it was like a war zone. Police and guard patrolling and checking IDs, debris everywhere. A coffin washed up in my yard. I was ever so grateful to find that the coffin in MY yard was a Halloween prop that had washed from under a neighbor's house. Because real coffins were legit surfacing all around. Hundreds of coffins bobbing around in the water and ending up wherever. *shudder* I was pretty dismayed to see a coffin in my yard. https://en.m.wikipedia.or...rto_(1994)http://www.nytimes.com/19...years.htmlGlad you're ok, rodeo and ufo. We are currently getting into hunker down mode for Irma. I am nearish Tallahassee. Be safe, babynoz and all who may be in the path. Murica: at least it's not Sudan. |

It looks like we may be directly in the path now, but I am still well inland. I'm not in a flood prone area as I was before even though I realize it's no guarantee. I can't really go anywhere as I'm sheltering pets, anyway. I'm in a secure building on high ground, though, and I have plenty of supplies, so fingers crossed we'll be ok. I hope things are going as well as they can for you. [Edited 9/9/17 8:31am]

Hey guys, between prepping and traveling I've been busy. I am in NYC for the duration. Incredibly, I have one family member still on the road with the company he works for, being chased by the storm. They were supposed to go to Chi but management changed plans to Tampa, (smh). Predictably they had to leave there so they headed to Atlanta ffs. Now they are heading for Kentucky! It would have been safer and less expensive had they just stuck with the original plan....go figure. In an unexpected twist, the supervisor/team leader on the road with them decided to abandon the team and return home. Wtf?
The other familly member flat out refused to leave the house and is riding out the storm, (smh), so I am safe but fighting off anxiety attacks worrying about loved ones.
I could really use some prayers and good thoughts right about now.
