Gov Abbott has called up the entire TX National Guard. One report says 12,000 (but that seems small) members. A friend in the Air National Guard is about to go get ready.

Big thank you to these men and woman who serve and are going to have to be away from their family and jobs for several weeks.

An excuse for a hurricane party. razz

We did that, back in 1983 when Hurrican Alicia hit. I'll never forget it.

A local rock station held a Hurricane party at the Flagship Hotel in Galveston, TX. The Flagship was built out on a pier, and was not actually on land.

My brother and I were playing poker with some friends, and we were listening to that rock station. They'd give reports from their party about every 15 minutes. It sounded like a whole lot of fun...

...until midnight, when Hurricane Alicia came ashore in Galveston.

I'll never forget it. The last time they broadcasted from the Flagship, you could hear people screaming, and stuff crashing to the floor. The rock DJ screamed that anyone who could hear him needed to take cover immediately, or risk death.

Second-worst thing I've ever heard on the radio.

and I was a few miles away (near the Ferry) trying to sleep!

I would have been between 8th and 9th grade but I do not know if school had started yet? Seems it had not? I think maybe school was delayed?

a few days later, I remember being at the school getting registered and my brother picked me up and told me we had "Juice" (electricity) I also remember I got a Michale Jackson 45..." Thriller / Can't Get Outta The Rain" I think I threw it on the roof of the school!

Then a few weeks later there was a 2nd one Berry it was weaker and I do not know if it was a direct hit?

I do remember a tee shirt "I survived Hurricane Alicia but Berry kicked my butt"

Well, I hope everyone that can be evacuated is/was able to do so and my prayers are with the survivors of the hurricane, especially in the Houston area. My relatives in Texas are all right but not everyone's family and friends are.

I'm really pissed right now. Everyone in my family except me thinks this is a whole bunch of crap about nothing. The last time we all thought this, Hurricane Ike killed my wife's grandmother. I'm pretty f***ing frustrated right now.

Haven't heard anything from my friend in Beaumont. She has family in Galveston and may have been there. No text or emails so far. Starting to worry me more and more.

Thanks, and you'd better believe I hit the road! People are now second-guessing whether or not Houston should have ordered an evacuation. I don't think so. Anyone that went through the Rita evacuation knows what would have happened. Even with the added contra-flow lanes on the freeways, it would have been gridlock and people would have been stranded and lives would have been lost.

I was lucky - I'm in a position where I could hit the road. But lots of people can't just tell their employer, "Hey, I'm scared so I'm bugging out. Good luck!" Heck, I had a guy do that to me before the Rita debacle. It was because he did that that my family and I ended up in jeopardy. No easy answer there (but I still want to punch that a-hole).

There's a great thread in P&R if you want to help. Thanks to benni for creating it!

Please keep praying for Houstonians. There now ARE mandatory evacuations in various places around Houston. I don't know where those people will go, or how they will get there. So please pray extra hard for them!

Believe it or not, Galveston is a good place to be this time. Since this is rain and not wind, the only real danger is flooding. But EVERYTHING in Galveston is raised up, or on stilts. I haven't heard anything about flooding on Galveston island, so I am optimistic your friend's family is OK.

That reminds me of Ike. All our friends were going to Baton Rouge but at the last minute, there was no room for us. We went to Florida instead. BR got it and Panama City was fine. You never know.

Rescue systems seem to be in place at least. Catastrophic. Anything coming on populated land as a cat 4 is life changing for all.

Crud, we have what's supposed to be a Category 3 hurricane heading our way. Tropical Storm Harvey is supposed to strengthen a bunch in the next 36 hours, and it could drop 20 inches of rain on us over the next few days.

No, my son stayed to be able to help his boss, who is running for Congress. But he is safe, high and dry at my mother-in-law's. No water got in the house, and it never lost power.

My brother- and sister-in-law did not leave - despite my begging and pleading - and they've lost power. They haven't got water in their house yet but they live near Buffalo Bayou and with the release of water from various dams, they might get wet.

My brother and his family are in The Woodlands, which is north of Houston, and they are fine.

I am in New Mexico, where I woke up to a sunny, 43-degree morning. My house is wet but I didn't like the carpet or wood floor we had any way!

The only real damage is in my garage. It looks like a tornado hit it! I was going to clean it out but now that's going to be an easy job because everything in there will probably be trash. Nothing valuable, luckily.

My music studio is attached to the back of the garage. I don't know if any water got in there although I'd be surprised if it didn't. But all musical stuff is either way off the ground, or upstairs safely in a closet.

The biggest thing is that we don't have power. Until we get it back, we can't do much drying of the water. But as long as it didn't get above the baseboards, we should be alright.

It is possible the bayou near us will crest its banks again. Not much I can do about it but I don't really care because everyone is safe.

Thanks for asking!

That is quite a bit! You sound pretty good for a guy with wet floors. Thanks for checking in. I kept wondering about your son. Your bayou brother took a chance. It's always better to leave if you can, especially if your vehicle might flood. That really sucks.

You don't know how hard I tried to get them to leave. And then my son did, too. In fact, he had them convinced Sunday morning to pull out. There was a little window when it was possible but my sister-in-law decided that window meant it was all over and everything was fine. WTF?!?

What I fear might happen is that their home won't flood and the next time a hurricane could head our way, they will say, "If we didn't flood during Harvey, we won't flood now!" True, but Harvey had little wind and no tornadoes because it hit Houston as a tropical storm, not a hurricane. I hope I can talk sense into them next time.

As bad as it is in Houston, if we'd had tornadoes and 135-mph wind like they did south of us, it would just be incomprehensible.

Polyamorous, lmao. Keep trying to call/text her if she still lets you. And only if you are just trynna find out how she made out, not personal stuff. It can take some time, even weeks to sort things out. If she doesn't have power she can't charge her phone etc, etc. Chances are she's ok. Hurricanes do have a way of blowing relationships in or out the door. Unpredictable. All that low pressure on the brain.

You got the brains of the bunch in that regard. So many people didn't leave New Orleans for Katrina because they made it through Camille back in the day - still pretty bad, lots of water. So they stayed and had to get evacuated when the levees broke after the storm. To be fair, people without cars were screwed unless they knew somebody with one, and had the cash to leave. Many elderly stayed.

A reporter asked a woman who lost everything in Rockport TX why they didn't evacuate. She said they did not have the money. It is expensive to leave and there are always extenuating circumstances like pets or your mom across town, gas shortages and no family or hotel to stay in within striking distance.

They said on the news 60 people died of heat complications stalled in traffic trying to evacuate Houston for - Rita? Everyone can't be on the road at once. Some people are faulting the mayor for a no-win call either way, imo.

My small condo (that I rent out now) and my family and their house are fine, but wow, a woman I used to date posted a pic of her family house where I had been a guest before (in Bellaire). Her parents had to be boated out of their neighborhood, they were taken to the convention center, then they jetted out to a relative in Mexico. Now they are back and getting an apt because the house was flooded. They had to be up on their kitchen counters for a while... with a cat.

Also, there are some reports that Red Cross can't manage the amount of donations they receive or put them to good use (despite Red Cross' popularity). In fact they have gotten in hot water about this before.

There are other targets for donations like:

https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief/

or a list:

https://www.houstoniamag....-charities

I'm picking the ghcf one.
