since I have to narrow it down to one I'm gonna go with Steel Magnolias...The Casting Director should have won an Oscar for putting together that Dream Cast...They took their time and found the right actress for each role...

I think we should discuss that having chicks in a film, doesn't necessarily make it a "chick flick." lol

yes, lol. a lot of the movies that i've seen listed here that i like quite a bit are never what i would think of as chick flick material. like lady snowblood, for example. if you go to the imdb page for that film, you'll see there are ten times as many guys who've given it a rating as women (6800 m voters to 673 f voters), & they gave it roughly the same average rating. now guys are probably more inclined to rate movies on imdb to begin with, but not ten times more likely.

compare that to (god, i think i'm gonna be sick) eat pray love. i would rather die than watch eat pray love, but that's the movie that comes to mind when i think of a chick flick, or a caricature of a chick flick (keeping in mind that i wanna avoid stereotypes). 31k women have rated it on imdb vs 28k men, and the women gave it a substantially higher rating.

I dunno...I kind of took the op to mean 'movies by, for or about chicks'. chick flicks, a la 'bridget Jones diary', don't really seem worthy of discussion.

I never considered looking up those stats on IMDB, very clever. If the gender rating ratio is the definitive barometer for this discussion then my movie falls woefully short as well--although not as badly as Lady Snowblood. lol

I did think it was funny seeing Blue Is The Warmest Color posted because I remembered a big criticism when it was released was that the sex scenes were very clearly conceived by a man for men.

well, they're also clearly adapted from the source material, which was conceived by a woman...i don't know what the criticism might be? i don't know how a woman might conceive the scenes differently, so as to be less 'for' men. i thought the sex scenes served the story pretty well.

With the preferred nomenclature being "chick flick" and not "chick movie," I did not consider the two terms synonymously when I replied. That said, I still think that they qualify and I would also add:

In the Mood for Love

Before Sunset (favorite of the series, though I enjoy all of them)

When Harry Met Sally

A Star is Born (Streisand/Kristofferson)

Something to Talk About (came for the Kyra Sedgwick crush, ended up falling for most of the characters. Probably the two characters who could be played by anyone and it would not have affected my experience were the Quad and Cullen characters)

Amelie

Bleu (Kieslowski)

And I don't know how one quantifies a "chick flick." If anything, IMDB betrays what our idea of the genre is if we look at the voting demographic. I would be fairly shocked if the general perception of any of the above films in this post were considered to not be chick flicks, yet they all have more votes by men than women (with similar ratings, by the way, so it's not just hey, my girlfriend dragged me to this shitty movie here's a 2).

The criticism I referenced (although it may have just been one loud critic) is talked about here: http://flavorwire.com/420...esbian-sex

And there is a quote in there by the author of the source material who also questions the director's approach to filming the sex scenes.

Huh...well, nobody forced her to sell her story to a straight dude. Seems kind of bad form to criticize on that basis. I guess it would be interesting to see how a lesbian would do it differently; but I think the dude did his story justice with the sex scenes. I didn't find them exploitive. They felt to me like how I felt when I was 19 and in love and my life was ruled by my genitals and then it falls apart and you don't want to live anymore. It's a human thing. Females and lesbians experience it too.

Until I see a similar scenario depicted by a lesbian as wildly different or more effective, I'll stand by this guy's as a fair one.

i guess we have to use a little caution in looking at the ratio of m/f ratings. i tried finding stats on the imdb page on their user demographics, but i couldn't seem to locate anything. either they're keeping that to themselves or i'm not looking hard enough.

however, i did find this article that suggests that the make-up of people rating movies on imdb is about 80% male. https://oneroomwithaview....ms-differ/

so when we see that there's 10 men rating lady snowblood for every woman, you have to keep in mind the existing imbalance. there's still more men proportionately rating that movie, but it's perhaps not as skewed as it might first seem. and certainly, when (yeesh) eat pray love gets about the same number of ratings from men & women, that means there's a far higher ratio of female users rating it than male users.

anyway, if we're trying to pin down exactly what a chick flick is, i think at bare minimum it ought to be a movie that women seem to like more than men. (by that standard, the only movie i mentioned that qualifies is clueless, which gets a 7.2 rating from women, and a 6.5 from guys).
