these are probably the movies i've gone back to the most over the years, and if any of them popped up on a streaming service right now, i'd sit and watch it happily.

not all of them are great or timeless movies (though i'd definitely make a case for at least two of them, maybe three), but there's a difference between favourite and best, and i'll always have room in my heart and time in my life for the occasional bit of trash.

after hours

i'll also mention sing street. though i've only watched it once, i loved it so much and thought it was so perfect & such a joy to watch that i can't see it not being a movie i return to many times.

Two of these just played again at American Cinematheque, Last House On The Left played with MANIAC and that crap CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, and Beyond The Valley of the Dolls just played at the Aero, with starlet Dolly Read stopping by for Q&A...i got her to sign my Playboy playmate book (182 autographs and counting: i intend to get as many for this dead fella that compiled most of them)

..i never liked it on dvd, but seen on a big screen with a crowd made a big difference.

I've always wanted to see AFTER HOURS on a big screen. ..AND the rough cut 4 hrs....if it still exists. U ever notice slight discrepancies in sequence? ....I've seen that movie probably more than any

hmmm, i can't recall any major sequence flubs off the top of my head, but i'm usually not too observant when it comes to things like that. if you have the time (or a link), i'd like to hear them. i'm due for a re-watch anyway, & it would be fun to keep an eye open for any miscues.

Damn Yankees is the only one I've seen, and it's probably the least well known. It's really good though.

Oh no... TELL ME I DIDN'T JUST READ THAT!

.

I know, opinions! Everyone is entitled to them!

.

But for me... MEAN STREETS is literally AS GOOD and AS IMPORTANT as ANY film in Scorsese's career. Just simply an early masterpiece that I could literally watch once a month and not get tired of (I don't think at least, I've never tried watching it that often).

.

MEAN STREETS is one of the movies I just want to climb inside of and LIVE THERE.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

i appreciate 'mean streets' as a good film, and i guess i kinda like it. it's just not a very stimulating experience to watch it, maybe?

i've read a bit about 'after hours' since you posted it...seems worthy of a re-watch. it's been years, and i have been working my way through his oeuvre since the release of 'silence', so maybe my opinion will differ now.

There are dozens of them, I find Scorsese movies comforting:

Casino
Goodfellas

The Departed

Star Wars
films are comforting, even the nearly unwatchable I and II.

I also have my go-to movies by season and traditional movies I watch around the holidays.

For example, in the summer I watch Boogie Nights, Do The Right Thing, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Troy and others.

When I want to be sad and happy:

  • Shopgirl
  • Lilo and Stitch
  • Up
  • Inside Out
  • Say Anything
  • Purple Rain

When I want to laugh:

  • What About Bob?
  • Waiting for Guffman
  • The Happening
  • Boggy Creek II: The Legend Continues (MST3k)
  • Fun in Balloonland (RiffTrax)

And these aren't movies, but I often watch the "Pottery Will Get You Nowhere" episode of The Wonder Years or "The Music Box" episode of Little House on the Prairie when I want to feel better. They always work, too.

These are the first 3 movies off the top of my head that function as my chicken soup (if I'm feeling down or sick and don't need to sip the whole thing just to get that four-course kind of feeling).

IMG_0046.jpg

Meatballs (1979)

I feel privileged each and every time witnessing the genius of Bill Murray blossom into our collective irreverence. At first glance you can't believe anyone would put this overslept clown in charge of anything, much less children. Yet deep down—underneath this disheveled mess of a man seemingly incapable of parsing even his own singularity—lies a humanity that is more reasonably and profoundly insightful than many of those off taking themselves far too seriously. So many camp movies owe their breezy, cricketed getaways to this piece of huggable ridiculousness.

Psychological insight: In theory one can out of empathy find relations with anything human relatable, but with the main kid I could be a hardened fool and still see the reflection.

---

IMG_0047.jpg

Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977)

Yeah, the second one. I can't believe it either. But the first one is a great movie to me, not my security blanket. Perhaps only one small step for mankind beyond a made-for-TV movie, but also at times gloriously close to how suburban kids in the 70s would be without the dreamt-up parental guidance. The third one in the series? Hell no. Even I have my limits.

Psychological insight: As a small child I breathed this atmosphere in like a dust devil striking the pitcher's mound.

----

IMG_0048.jpg

CaddyShack (1980)

All these little bits and skits somehow form a cohesiveness as strong as the greatest lowbrow comedies ever made for either a quick dip in an infested pool or a long drive past a self-congratulatory ass while his polyester pants get taken down a gopher hole via a duel of wits between a greenskeeper from that acid trip and a cheeky topsoil dweller inside the pop sublimity of Kenny Loggins. Madness.

Psychological insight: I passionately enjoy diving into the deep end but need to always keep in mind the Baby Ruth that lurks at the bottom of every draining.

These movies can almost effortlessly (the sound doesn't even have to be on and there can be a zillion distractions) make me feel like a young kid smiling at part of what makes this experience such a big red proboscis.
