The Dark Tower

Grade;C

It would be a D- if it wasnt for MattyMat and Idris' performances.
Rushed, edited up the ying yang. And it shows the 8 books condensced into 90 minutes. Which is such a shame.

I was so disappointed. I read The Gunslinger about 10 years ago when I was just finishing up secondary school (high school, for my American friends) and I loved it. In the years since, I've read all of the Dark Tower books with the exception of the last one and for me, it's my favourite book series. So when I heard of the movie being made I got excited. The casting of Idris Elba as Roland got me feeling slightly less excited. Don't get me wrong, I love Idris Elba more than what would be considered a legal amount, but I couldn't see him playing The Gunslinger. Then, I find out that the movie is PG-13. Not a major issue but it means that a lot of what happens in the books would need to be toned down for a younger audience. But I still had hope. Until I seen the trailer. It reminded me of that awful Wesley Snipes movie from a few years ago. I think it was called Gallow Walkers or something. So, the evidence was mounting up that perhaps the Dark Tower movie I'd been waiting on for 10 years wouldn't live up to my expectations. Then I saw it. And it was worse than I thought it would be. There's far too much stuff left out. Surely a TV series similar to Game of Thrones would have been a better way to go. Or better yet, a more tightly focused movie based on the first book. If done well they could have had a profitable series on their hands but instead we get a mess of a movie which will most likely put an end to any future plans for the series.

And for all the complaining I did about Idris Elba's casting he turned out to be the best thing about it. Though I still would have preferred Timothy Olyphant or Josh Brolin.

sad Maybe Steven King will remake into a mini-series like he's done before...

I don't know how familiar you are with the books but if, like me, you're a big fan then you'll be very disappointed with the movie. It's a very bad adaptation.

If you don't know about the book series, then you'll probably just think it's a badly made movie that completely wastes the talented actors involved.

Either way, you probably won't like it.

This movie is on another level of the Dark Tower. This movie is Jake's story, not the Gunslinger's. I went to see it with an open mind knowing that it was not going to be faithful to the original books. This isn't Stephen King's Dark Tower, it's the director's version. Stephen's name doesn't appear above the title on the movie. I thought they did a good job telling the tale in the amount of time they used. I'm sure there are tons of deleted scenes.
