Sad. Nelsan's True Blood character was one of the best things about the show. He absolutely killed it. And for him to die at 39... cry

May he Rest in Peace. rose

"He was a great talent, and his words and presence will be forever missed."

Nelsan Ellis, the actor who starred in HBO's True Blood as Lafayette Reynolds, has died, his manager Emily Gerson Saines, told The Hollywood Reporter.

He was 39.

"Nelsan has passed away after complications with heart failure," Saines said. "He was a great talent, and his words and presence will be forever missed."

On True Blood, Lafayette was a short order cook at Merlotte's. In the books, he was killed off, but because Ellis made him such an enjoyable character, he survived in the series.

"We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Nelsan Ellis," HBO said in a statement. "Nelsan was a long-time member of the HBO family whose groundbreaking portrayal of Lafayette will be remembered fondly within the overall legacy of True Blood. Nelsan will be dearly missed by his fans and all of us at HBO."

True Blood creator, Alan Ball said: "Nelsan was a singular talent whose creativity never ceased to amaze me. Working with him was a privilege."

Other cast members took to social media to express their heartbreak...

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

He was so talented, and funny, and smart, and witty. It's not often a straight man can act his way through a gay character so convincingly, and yet so warmly.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Wow!

I was honestly thinking of him just earlier this week. In retrospect, he was arguably the best thing about True Blood. Easily should have taken an Emmy.

May he rest in peace. rose

I never particularly cared for his character on the show. But, yes, he was talented. I don't know much about alcoholism, but it's scary that your body is capable of shutting down if you're an alcoholic and attempt to quit cold-turkey. cry

Yep, detoxing from alcohol can pretty easily turn fatal(depending how long the person has been drinking, how much they drink, and if they drink hard Liquor). More so than detoxing from Opiates or Cocaine/Crack. Detoxing from Opiates will make a person extremely sick and probably make them wish they were dead, but usually isn't fatal. Detoxing from coke mainly causes sleep issues and irritability.

Anyway, its really sad that Nelsan wasn't able to overcome his addictions.

From all the photos I've seen of him he looked well. I never would have guessed that he struggled with substance abuse.

Substance abuse has cut so many lives short. cry disbelief
