The estate of LOTR author J.R.R. Tolkien accused Warner Bros of exploiting the fantasy character he created for monetary gains.

The lawsuit between #Warner Bros. and J.R.R. Tolkien's estate has finally been settled. Reports stated that the two parties have agreed to the terms amicably following a row in court that begun in 2012.

J.R.R. Tolkien's estate, which holds the rights to the characters the author created for his epic novels "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) and "The Hobbit," accused the Hollywood studio of exploitation. Warner Bros. allegedly used the characters in its digital merchandise, online games and video games, which was not part of the original agreement. The studio, on the other hand, filed a countersuit that claimed a "loss of millions of dollars in license fees" due to the litigation.

But which of J.R.R. Tolkien's other stories could Warner Bros. do if the estate has indeed allowed another LOTR follow-up? Can Warner Bros now make its own epic fantasy based only on the characters in Tolkien’s work?

This was how the video games based on the “Lord of the Rings” came to be. For instance, “Middle Earth: #Shadow Of Mordor,” which came out in 2013 as a video game, had a storyline that wasn’t explicitly written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Its development, however, took inspirations from his novels.

Beren and Lúthien

Because the main plot of Beren and Lúthien is inspired by Tolkien and his wife, the story ended up being an open window into their marriage and a close-up view of the love that each held for the other. One of the key scenes from the book, which describes Beren looking out from a forest to see Lúthien dancing in the moonlight, was directly inspired by JRR seeing his wife dancing in a similar environment. Christopher Tolkien, the son of JRR, made the finishing touches on the story to make it ready for release. He kept the story in its original form, which had been preserved for an entire century. JRR and Edith Tolkien share a grave in the northern suburbs of Oxford, England. The stone has the name "Lúthien" underneath Edith's, and "Beren" underneath JRR's.

What on earth is left to do after Peter Jackson's epic vision of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy?! It was everything I had envisioned as a kid devouring the books. Silmarillion? Good luck!

Silmarillion seems like an inpossible task to film.

There's too much money to be made ... of course there will be more *cough Harry Potter, Star Wars, Matrix cough*

Seems that Warner Bros can make up their own stories for movies based on Tolkien's books, it doesn't have to be specifically a Tolkien story. I also get the impression that pieces of the Smillirion can be done. And even the posthumous book his son finished can be used. Just no videogames it seems.
