Being a non-religious person, for me marriage would only be about the tax breaks and health benefits thing. I can commit myself to someone, and trust that someone's committed to me, without signing a piece of paper.

..
marriage was created at the time when man stopped living

a nomadic existence and started living an agricultural one

till this point, courting was between consenting adults

it wasn't the norm to pair up, and women could choose

the men they would court and when they would court them.

but the culture of an agricultural soceity, put value onto

land and laws were drawn up governing who owned what.

it was important for a man to pass his land onto his own

sons.

so the law of marriage was drawn up

women became a commodity, contracted to one husband

thereby limiting the possibilities of her mothering another

man's offspring..

marriage was a bitch then

and is still a bitch now

i say

fuck the health n tax benefits

if u need a bit of paper to prove your commitment

then u already done fucked up

Ya'll act like we get married for Tax breaks?? I am married and we don't file together, not much break going on. And for once we have health insurance for both of us!

I got married because I fell in love and knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my husband, and make a formal commitment before God..okay, and have cake...which was really good, by the way..

If he left me tomorrow would I drain him for everything he owns? No. I don't play that way. It is hard to explain, like many have said here..you just know. But don't knock us for choosing this kind of commitment. Don't just play it off as some government crap. For a great deal of us it is much more than we can explain in words..much deeper than just wanting a party or a dress, or a gift. Much bigger than fear of what we might lose in the process. I don't love being married..I love being married to my husband. I love my step children. I am committed to all of them, for life.

Nope, I haven't been married yet.
I am not planning to. If you feel like you have met some1 and you want to do the marriage thing: go right ahead. Some people feel it is the logical next step in their relationship when it comes to love. In the US it has more benefits to be married aswell. In Holland it isn't like that. I just don't believe in "marriage" that's all. For all of you who do: I respect that. Don't take my comment so seriously biggrin

Marriage only benefits men. Married men live longer. I believe some man thought it up to trap women into taking care of them. Smile. Women lose their name, identity and independence. For what a ring. Sounds like an even trade. I will love, honor and obey you for a ring. And bragging rights that I have a husband to do things for. Smile. Pitting unmarried women against women that are married. I swear it's a set up. Do married women live longer? It an outdated form of oppression. But thats just my opionion.
sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time.
