Wonder Woman
At times the pace feels slow, which would be more workable, I think, if a full, epic reveal of the title character's abilities were backloaded across the 2-hour-21-minute running time. By 30 minutes in, though, we've already seen glimpses of nearly all of Wonder Woman's wonder to come. That said, the payoff scenes are still great fun. Wonder Woman is badass -- and Gal Gadot offers a masterclass of balancing beauty and ferocity, naivete and knowing, scorn and compassion, tenderness and power to give us a layered Diana. I, too, thought the special effects were a bit throwing -- not so much for poor quality as for their overuse, particularly at the film's razzle-dazzle climax. But this is an American summer superhero flick, so.... Overall, quite satisfying.

7.5/10

Hope she gets her own Animated series like Batman and Superman

The change to WWI was a pretty clever creative liberty for Wonder Woman's producers to take, I think. Hero X vs. Hitler's regime is a premise that has been done to death. In this origin story, however, Wonder Woman isn't fighting any particular human baddie per se so much as the phenomenon of war itself -- and WWI was a war unlike any humanity had seen to that point.

Not really, that's like saying hey instead of Coke let's drink Pepsi. Yes Nazi thing has been done before but since that is nothing new for Wonder Woman I don't mind. Hey 30 years from now some lame ass might think the same thing and have Captain American coming from the Vietnam War and not WW2.

Trust me, the change is virtually unnoticeable -- in part because the film is still set in a German-aggressed Europe no more than 25 year ahead of the source material. You'll see: It works.

There is an actual, valid reason as to why they changed it. We'll discuss more after you've seen it.

OK to that for the sake of the movie. But everybody I personally would like it set in WW2, but ok it's set WW1

Last night I watched on Neflix War Machine (2017), it was an facinating story about a US/NATO operation in Afganistan. It had a excellent cast (Ben Kingsly, Tilda Swinton, Hopper Penn, Alan Ruck and Topher Grace) and it was really thought provoking and topical especially in these uncertain times. However, I found Brad Pitt's portayal of Gen. Glen McMahon to be annoying and over the top.....like a poor man's Patton meets Forest Gump (espcially the scenes where he was jogging). Anyway I give this film a 3.5 out of 5 popcorn

I enjoyed the film, but you're right about Pitt, his portrayal is ridiculous.

I'm back! After an extended period watching the entire "Best of 2016" lists from sexton, damo, and my other favorite filmophiles, I'm anxious to let you all know what I think about such tour de forces as "The Handmaiden", "Manchester By the Sea", "April and the Extraordinary World", and "Various Sad Women Lament About Not Having Faithful Husbands".

Psyche!

I never saw any of those movies, and I made up that last one (although I bet that movie is out there, just under another title). But I DID see.....

"Baywatch"!

Here is a movie with The Rock aka Franchise Viagra, AND a completely ripped Zac Efron, AND some various "hot"babes who I have never heard of, AND The Hoff, AND Pamela Anderson (hopefully shot from many feet away). Perfect for the summer, right?

Right! - if you are very drunk, very stupid, or both (in other words, you voted for Donald Trump for president).

Baywatch suffers from Preview Dysfunction. It's one of those movies where pretty much everything that is funny was in the previews. Sadly, Mr. Franchise Viagra cannot cure this kind of dysfunction. He tries, though.

But really - what should you expect from a movie based on a TV show that was famous for nothing more than slow-motion shots of well-endowed women running on a beach? I'll tell you what you should expect - a whole movie of slow-motion shots of well-endowed women running on a beach! You don't get that, though. Instead, you get lots and lots of penis jokes, which makes no sense. Everyone knows the audience for TV "Baywatch" was dudes. It follows that the audience for movie "Baywatch" is also going to be dudes. And as a dude, I can tell you that dudes do not care for jokes about other dudes' penises. And we REALLY don't want to see other dudes' penises. Just hearing penis jokes is bad enough - we do not need the visual, thank you very much.

There is absolutely no plot whatsoever that makes any kind of sense at all. If you're going into this movie hoping for a plot, you will be disappointed. The story has a lot of holes, most of which are plugged with shots of The Rock and, to a lesser extent, Zac Efron without their shirts on. But....I'm pretty sure Zac Efron's abs were either painted on, or at least enhanced with some paint. Kind of like my hair.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you the best part of the night. It was, of course, the RodeoSchro Movie Preview Indication System. Not that it was all that accurate with regard to "Baywatch" but there were some interesting things happening in the previews.

We had previews for some King Arthur movie (snore), the next Kingsman movie (avoid! avoid!), and a couple of chick flicks - both of them are Girls Night Out movies. One centers around white girls, and one centers around African-American women. Both look good, but neither my wife nor my daughter want to go with me to see either one of them. What?!?!? I've been drinking Cosmopolitans and everything, and they won't go to a chick comedy with me?

But the middle preview was AWESOME. It was for Al Gore's sequel to "An Inconvenient Truth". It shows Donald Trump spewing nonsense about the climate. I booed him, and I was the only one that did. No surprise, but the big surprises were that no one told me to quit booing, and no one applauded for Trump - ever. I was quite surprised, and kind of happy that I didn't have to fight my way out of the theater based on my use of my First Amendment rights.

I can think of no reason to advise you to see "Baywatch", unless you too want to see the Al Gore preview and boo Donald Trump. You could probably write a paper for your sociology class on that but otherwise, "Baywatch" is a waste of time and money.

Let's rate "Baywatch" as....now, I know what you're thinking. "RodeoSchro spent a whole paragraph crying about penises and we all know that was merely a set-up for him to use pensises in some sort of hilarious rating system".

Nope!

I give "Baywatch" only one of Zac Efron's Painted-On Abs out of the six possible Zac Efron's Painted-On Abs. Do some crunches instead!

Alien: Covenant

I did not like Prometheus all that much due to the questionable/not believable science and the story that just felt thin and undeveloped... Covenant was better (to me), but still not really great. I could have taken more back story about the engineers and David's experiments on the planet and less typical Alien gore. Oh well.

2.5/5

I don't know what the deal is with Efron and the trend to have his characters involved in lots of visual dick jokes (like Dirty Grandpa), but it is quite disturbing.

But my question is, how could you NOT mention the morgue scene?

That scene inpsired and was encompassed in my way-too-long paragraph about penises. The morgue scene was basically the worst scene of the whole movie. It was rank, stupid, and completely unfunny.

I guess it fit perfectly in a rank, stupid and (almost) completely unfunny movie.

But I should have known better. My wife encountered some people in the elevator last week were talking about the movie. They said it was rank, stupid and unfunny. When my wife relayed this to me, I said, "Psssshhhhh! Who are these elevator dwellers to tell ME what is rank, stupid and unfunny? I am tooting in their general direction!"

I should have saved those toots.

I was used to the humor this time around. I went in expecting the movie to be a big comedy and that's what I got. The story was weaker than in the first film though and I didn't get the feel that it was part of something larger like many of the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. 3.5/5

7.5/10

[Edited 6/3/17 13:35pm]

Agree with the pacing - but aren't lots of origin movies are like that - lots of exposition? Still when the action kicked in it was pretty bad-ass! Also agree on the FX spectacular at the end... but the beach battle scene was fantastic. Good for Gadot and Jenkins!

8/10 for me.

Likewise, when I saw Requiem for a Dream at the cinema, I felt like I had to go home and watch a cartoon afterward.

I have to say idon't care for the two main characters, but the mother's ending, is so fuckin sad, and that masterpiece of a scene when the mother's firends hug and cry togheter in the outisde. sad sad
