I saw that on twitter yesterday. It was funny and not funny. The comments were hilarious though. Never realized seals were that strong. We have a "seal problem" at our children's pool here. People are fighting to have rights to use that beach area with the seals and the City is saying no they don't those rights, leave the seals alone. It gets ugly. Hopeful enough parents will see this and leave the damn seals alone. Take their kids elsewhere.

Good thing the seal let go of her and didn't hold her under water.

Those sea lions are generally 6 feet long and weigh 610-860 pounds, so yeah they're strong.

Honestly, I'm ignorant to their stats, I've seen them up close at Sea World, where they are all cute and cuddly balancing balls on their noses. I don't bother them in the wild. I know they have some sharp teeth that'll take a chunk out of you that's about it.

I don't think there's a history of them being aggressive animals, but animals are unpredictable.

I hate to say it but that was kinda funny, because he let go.

You're right, they are not aggressive unless they are going for actual food. This particular sea lion thought the girl had food, that's why he pulled her in. They are not like sharks, gators, tigers etc who view humans as a meal.

It was more likely playing with her, like that pilot whale that drug that swimmer down only to realize the swimmer couldn't hold her breath for as long as it could and it brought the swimmer back up.

How was the seal supposed to know that was just a little ole girl that couldn't play as rough?

Did they confirm the guy who saved her is her father? Either way, he left his Ray-Bans in the water and got his phone and wallet all soaked. I woulda put them aside before jumping in! lol j/k

Malicious joy, or schadenfreude, as we call it over here, is soooo not my thing.

I was worried that she might have gotten some of that filthy water in her stomach, or that she was obviously bitten by that sea lion. Poor girl.

From the comments I read, he wasn't. A lot of people complained that her parents just walked off with her and didn't even thank the guy. He probably lost a lot of personal stuff doing what he did.

Yeah at the end of the video you can see the mother rushing off with the girl. Thought that was cold of her.

Maybe the mom wanted to get away from the crowd (and video recording) and thank the guy later

Could have been. Or they were so concerned for their child they forgot and the guy went on to attend to himself.

The feedback is generally positive. And I'm sure the guy is getting a lot of thanks from people for his quick reaction.

i would have not even had to think about it and I would be in that water too. Not too long ago I was at a wedding that was near a small pond and some of the little kids were told they could go feed some ducks or fish or something... this was after dark...super dark.... and all I could think about is I did not want to have to get wet. But if I needed to I would not have hesitated.

I would not need to be thanked. I would want to save the child. My phone... oh well. And I would not have felt slighted in the least.

Girl has been treated for possible "seal finger infection".

The guy who saved her was apparently a relative, that explains the mother's behavior afterward.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/girl-pulled-water-sea-lion-treated-seal-finger-infection-n764391

The family of the Canadian girl, who was dragged into the water b...he weekend and is being treated for a related infection, is speaking out for the first time.

Dramatic video of the sea lion grabbing the girl's dress and pulling her into the sea as she sat on a Richmond, British Columbia, pier on Saturday quickly went viral.

An older man who appeared to be a relative jumped into the water and quickly rescued her. The girl's father credits the older relative's quick-thinking with saving her life.

"If he had one- or two-second doubt about that, my girl could have been gone by then. That reaction, makes him a hero," the girl's father said in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Days later, the Vancouver Aquarium urged the girl's family to get her help because she was possibly in danger of a hazardous infection known as "seal finger."

Well he's Asian, so I thought it was possible he could be related. I give him a LOT of credit for acting lightning-fast, I think most people would have frozen in shock for a few seconds before jumping in.

seal finger infection? eek But the seal snatch her in by her clothes. Somehow I'm picturing she has a finger infection but maybe that's just the name of the infection and it's really an all over kind of thing. Anyway, hopeful she'll be okay, these infections are iffy these days. And now we know, the man is related so the parents weren't being rude.
