Amazon is weird! But Great!

So I needed some small plastic things that hold up a shelf in my kitchen cabinets. I had to look them up by their patient number. They were easy to find but they all had to be shipped--shipped to the store for pick up or to my house for more than they cost.

But amazon had them...cool! But where is the checkout button? What? It is an add on item? So the total has to be $35? What? Lame! But wait! I have not yet pre-ordered an album I want (an obscure one hit wonder from the 80 called Prince) So I add the CD and then it says check out. So I do. It says you will not be charged until the item ships. Then it says the clips had been shipped! And then the price of the CDs was reduced. I ordered yesterday and I got a text it is out for delivery....and they charged $4.33 on my CC.

Not only did i manage to get them shipped for free but I bypassed the need to buy something else and I will get the CDs shipped for free too.

It is crazy!

Amazon rocks. if you pay 99$ per year, you become a 'Prime' member, and you always get free shipping on discounted items. i've been saving time by buying things like potting soil, hardware items, electronics, and furnace filters online. get them the next day delivered to my home eek

in the old days i'd have to spend a Saturday afternoon driving around, Home Depot for the potting soil, Best Buy for the cable, burning gas and jostling around on the roads.

now, (mind you, in spring i love the hardware store so i a lways go in person) but now in the deep of Minnesota winter when no one wants to drive i just click on buttons and the boxes arrive at my doorstep the next day.

not to mention, with Prime there are tons of movies to stream. Amazon is better than Netflix now imo, because on Netflix if it's not available on subscription you're out of luck. with Amazon, you can purchase download/viewing of movies (Dr. Strange etc.) and pay a one-time fee for like Walking Dead episodes, available through Amazon the next night after they are broadcast.

the bad thing is, there are people who drive around following the Amazon delivery vans an stealing whatever the driver leaves on said doorstep so, there's that.

overall imo: Amazon 9.9 stars out of 10

I lie Amazon a lot. biggrin nod But unfortunately I've had to change when I order from there because I had a couple of orders which either didn't show up when they said they did, or someone has been stealing my orders when they arrive at my apartment and I am at work. pissed That basically means I have to order stuff on Thursdays so it arrives when I'm at home on Saturday. I'm sort of pissed now because I saw some bed frame on Amazon that I wanted to order, but it was shipping on a day when I would be at work, so I tried looking for something like it I could find locally and buy some time today or tomorrow, but not a single place even had it, including the chain mattress and bedding stores in town. :disbelief:

I can probably do that with some stuff, but the thing I was looking for this weekend is a large item that couldn't and probably shouldn't be shipped to my workplace.

..btw, just to carry on from my previous post - I don't know what discounts Amazon gives in the US, but I take it it has a *reputation* for doing that, right? Well - Mr. Bezos is worth $78 billion, if I remember the figure correctly!!!! BILLION!! So obviously, the discounts are not high enough, and - if the other retailers are even MORE expensive, then there's Something Funny Going On!!! Something REALLY weird!

for one a value of a company is not always based on how much profit it makes. Look at google and yahoo! Or ebay! The value of Mr. Bezos may be based on what its shares are being sold for.

I always thought the 99 dollars was high- but I was just thinking books- I never thought of big things like potting soil and electronics- that is a good deal! Maybe I should start getting those things delivered to my doorstep....

I used to work for Amazon. They are evil. But they deliver Haagen Dazs and foam mattresses (usually in less than an hour) in my times of need. And they have a new series titled "I Love Dick" starring Kevin Bacon. So I will continue to turn a blind eye.

Disclosure: I own some stock in Amazon which I've had since the year 2000, so it's worth quite a bit of money right now biggrin , but unfortunately not enough for me to retire on yet. neutral But to answer why they are a monster, it's because they have used their power and popularity to basically become a monopoly. They're destroying brick and mortar retail, making untold bilions of dollars in the process, but they pay their warehouse staff slave wages, and they've basically turned into Walmart on steroids. I am a loyal customer and shareholder, but their business practices have given me mixed feelings. I know this isn't good for people in the long run, and there needs to be some type of regulation on their monopoly staus.

How so? Let's say, for example, I set up an online store that sold all sorts of things, kind of like amazon. Then, my store becomes so big and makes me so much money that I can afford to set up my own movie and TV production company to make movies and TV shows I'd like to see. So I create my own online network that has exclusive rights to show my movies and TV shows and if anyone else wants to see them, they have to pay me a subscription fee. How would I be in the wrong? My online store is giving people what they want delivered straight to their door. My movie/TV company is making the kinds of products that wouldn't get airtime on a traditional TV network and best of all, I'd be raking it in. The public get what they want, I make a fortune. Everyone wins. Especially me because I'm a billionaire. Now what's wrong with that?

Yeah - all that is the businessman's point of view, not MINE - the VIEWER'S!! Now, what the fuck do I care how much money you have or not - if the same place is in charge of selling TP and in charge of - not just selling art, but also (MY GOOD GOD!) curating it!! then..... I ain't GOING there! Has the public gone CRAZY-FUCKING-MAD???!!!

If a musician sets up his own online store to sell his own merchandise and music, is that not the same thing, just on a smaller scale? He's making the art and selling it. Not only that but he's also selling t shirts, mugs and whatever else he can print his brand on. Is this behaviour not to be championed?

Besides, Amazon is a huge company with different divisions so to say that they shouldn't be selling toilet paper and making movies is the same as saying Sony shouldn't be making TVs and Playstations and running a record label and making movies. They are different divisions within the same big company. Most big corporations have their fingers in many pies. Disney, Google, Nintendo, Sony. Even the WWE has its own movie studio. I don't see the problem with it. The people in charge of these companies have figured out a way of making more money. Don't tell me if you were making millions from operating a large online store you'd turn down the chance to make billions by adding a movie studio to it. Of course you wouldn't. Because you're not a moron.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with it. Why do you think people shouldn't expand into other territories? What harm does it do? And what makes you believe that a musician setting up his own store to sell his own music and merchandise is less favourable than having another company do it for him and taking the majority of the profits.
