cool idea!

much better made? you mean the best foreign films are better than many American films?

it is like saying "the 80s music is better than the stuff today..." but the said the same thing in the 80's about music from the 60s and 70s....

but I do need to watch *not movies* the last three "Sherlock" shows... dose that count?

I have maybe 10 movies on my list... none are foreign...

I'm Irish so if I watch an American made film, does that count? Tell you what, I'll watch an American movie, Once Upon a Time in America (it's got an Italian director so it's REALLY foreign) and you can watch an Irish film. I'd recommend one of these three: The Van, The Snapper or The Guard.

i watched under the shadow (qatar/jordan/uk co-production, set in iran) about two weeks ago, and thought that was really terrific.

That's "Life is Beautiful" directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. Be warned though--even though it's funny, it's also sad. Have the tissues ready.

I very much liked The Guard. I said in one of the movie threads that I'll watch any film where Brendan Gleeson is front and center. Great actor.

The Duke of Burgundy was one of my favorite films of 2015. The soundtrack by Cat's Eyes (featuring The Horrors' Faris Badwan) is heavenly too.

You should try The Snapper or The Van. Similar kind of comedy only they're set in Dublin, which automatically makes them better in my book.

Let me remind you that "Porky's" is a Canadian film.

That's all you really need.

Yep.

That said, I'd wanted to catch something from Alejandro Jodorowsky this weekend, but a friend piqued my interest yesterday in 2011's Beginning of the Great Revival, despite its mixed reception. I'll look into it at the very least.

I agree but I am not sure that is what the movie does. (and i was not clear i saw it when it first came out on VHS) I think it no more mocked it than the boy in the striped pajamas did.

but i will keep this post in mind... i wonder if you really hold to this or if you exploit the Hollocost when it suits you?

i just looked up 'beginning of a great revival.' you were being a little generous calling its reception mixed! it has a 29% metacritic rating.

.

what jodorowsky films were you considering? i've seen the 'famous' ones i guess (el topo, holy mountain) & would like to dig a little deeper at some point.

Yeah... I saw those aggregate ratings. confused I'd like to think I'm taking qualitative as well as quantitative data into account, though: I've run into one other ringing endorsement from someone I personally know, and I've generally found my friend's taste in (Maoist) lit interesting, if not altogether likeable. At worst, I'm not above holding a crappy film recommendation over his head as means to get a free beer out of him at some point.

I'd planned on re-watching Holy Mountain this weekend and also catching Jodorowsky's Dune,by Frank Pavich. Have you had a chance to catch that?
