i have a special affection for any piece of art that takes advantage of a medium in order to communicate something that wouldn't work in any other medium. 'the red turtle' could only be an animated movie; and a it's damn good one. an absolute joy to watch.
I loved the animation style of this. Thought the whole movie was beautiful.
world of tomorrow - 5/5 more stick figure animation from don hertzfeldt. there are more ideas in this 16 minute short than there are in most 2hr movies, i'd say. like it's such a beautiful day, it's funny & completely bizarre & contains some moments that can really kick you in the stomach when you least expect it.
I wouldn't go so far as to say the Oscars are a better arbiter of the arts than the Grammys, but they are much more in tune with my tastes than the Grammys for sure. I look at the songs/albums that win Grammys and I scratch my head.
To the extent you may be referring to my last post . . .
The comparison was drawn to Oscars '17 and Grammys '88. I only said Oscars '17 got it right, and Grammys '87 got it wrong.
I've been upset with the Academy's choices before -- Driving Miss Daisy over Do The Right Thing, Pacino Scent of a Woman over Denzel Malcolm X, and others.
But this year, even if La La had taken Best Picture, the Academy still would have gotten a high marks for rewarding most of the memorable films of the year.
It was just a general observation of mine comparing the Grammys and the Oscars now that the former was introduced to the conversation--not really a direct reaction to what you said.
I often don't agree with Oscar winners too. (Crash winning best picture? Please.) However, I at least understand and know of the nominations in general. I can't say the same for the Grammys. The American Top 40 is very alien to me these days.
lady snowblood - 3.5/5 there are lots of things to enjoy in this revenge thriller, its visual flair in particular (not just limited to stylized fountains of blood that erupt pretty regularly). my enthusiasm is tamped down a bit by the last 35 minutes or so, where i thought the pacing seemed to get bogged down both times i've watched it.
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) - A young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armor worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.
The stop-motion animation is really worth seeing. 4/5
My previous experience with Wes Anderson films was limited to some of The Royal Tennenbaums.
There's something about this guy and his work that just makes me want to punch him in the face. ...Over and over and over again.
I made it through the first 10 minutes and then I just couldn't take it any more.
Watch Moonrise Kingdom.
Maybe you should give Grand Budapest Hotel another try and just start 30 minutes into it.
Yes, of the Wes Anderson movies I've seen, Moonrise Kingdom is my favorite. However, I would not recommend any of his movies to Ace. That style seems way to fanciful for him.

Okay, cool with me.
