Lol Whatever you're the one who gave it a good review before seeing the whole thing. So the bias is on you. "Oh yeah it's good, someone said it was, I haven't finished seeing it but I'll say it's good too. That's confirmation bias. Didn't even form your own opinion and gave it a positive review because others had. But whatever we all like different things or even fall asleep through something and pretend you like it too. It's all good.

He specifically said he didn't rate the movie after the first time because he fell asleep.

My mistake. Still funny how he fell asleep though. The reaction my date and others I know had while watching it too.

Again I'm not saying I hate the movie, just that it's not very good.

Now, after all the critical hoopla and the 100% RT, my confirmation bias would come if it doesn't take home any major awards on Sunday. Which I highly doubt it will.

While I quite enjoyed "this Arrival thing", and think its worthy of the accolades, I do agree its a shame The Witch received no nominations. Do films like that (dark, not-quite, but semi-horrorish) ever get nominated? The worst oversight this year, to me, was The Handmaiden

Are you sure you didn't like Arrival because a critic told you "um ..no s'plosion make smart movie"?

You got me. Immediately after the movie was over, I frantically ran to the nearest computer and dialed up all the most pretentious critics to tell me what my opinion of it was. nuts

If you will, so will I

I'm not going to get into this really, since I'm just not that invested in this. Just going to say, I don't know you, but I've been reading damosuzuki's movie posts for years, and if nothing else, he is always consistent and unswayed by others.

If you want to make a case for your conspiracy theory that a particular film's success is due to critical brainwashing, that's fine, but no need to mangle someone else's post to try and prove your point.

thirst - the first sex scene in thirst cemented what i first believed after seeing the handmaiden: park chan-wook can make very, very steamy sex scenes when he wants to.

.

unlike the handmaiden, whose length i never felt at all, thirst felt just a touch baggy to me. that aside, i thought this was a pretty novel approach to a vampire story (something i have pretty limited interest in usually) and the end in particular is something i think will stay with me for a long time. 3.5/5

joint security area - by far the most conventional park chan-wook movie i've seen to date. there are a few visual flourishes that hint at where he'd end up, i guess, but otherwise this plays as a fairly straightforward police procedural shoe-horned into the korean peninsula. none of that should be taken as a criticism; it's completely effective as a crime story, & i thought the way it portrayed enemies becoming friends & the destruction of that friendship by circumstances beyond their control was completely believable, even moving. 4/5

The Jungle Book (2016) - After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther, Bagheera, and free spirited bear, Baloo.

The computer animation was very impressive. 3.5/5

what's at the top, if you don't mind me asking?

i've had it on my 'i must get around to that someday' list for years. seeing & loving the handmaiden so much finally gave me the initiative to start working through all the park chan-wook films that i'd missed out on the first time around.

stoker - 3/5 i didn't quite love park chan-wook's first and so far only english language film. it's definitely filled with a lot of the qualities that made me enjoy most of his other films: loads of atmosphere & odd-ball characters that seem to have come out of a different time. a lot of the elements were there, but i didn't think any of the revelations that came were that shocking, and i didn't really get that satisfying mental crunch that comes when a film really sticks the landing.

.

i'd still call it a recommendable film for sure, but i wouldn't say it forcefully.

I first saw Thirst at the cinema when it was released. I couldn't resist that movie poster even though it's the sanitized for the U.S. version.

These are my top ten vampire movies:

1. Let The Right One In (2008)
2. Shadow Of The Vampire (2000)
3. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
4. Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
5. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
6. Vampyr (1932)
7. Dracula: Pages From A Virgin's Diary (2002)

8. Near Dark (1987)
9. Habit (1996)
10. Thirst (2009)

I haven't seen What We Do In The Shadows yet. That one could make my list.

I saw it 3D last year, but like when you went to see Arrival, it was late after having a big meal with family and I fell asleep. lol So I waited until I watched it again last night to rate it because, you know, I wasn't about to let all those clueless critics influence my review. smile

Well after the Oscars we're going to be seeing more people going to see Moonlight, which is a great choice and a good thing.

The oscars went as I imagined, didn't go looking for confirmation bias but I got it anyway. lol

But as with la la Land and Moonlight, what got me was the freshness of the individuals involved. Holywood and the movie industry had become so stale that you could taste it, same writers, directors, cinematographers, directors year after year. So good for Moonlight, go see it.

Moonlight
Great movie, just be warned not to expect to leave happy because it is a sobering movie. It is an adult movie. So don't take your 4 young kids like at the screening I saw where the parents midway decided to take them to see Moana instead.

Moonlight 2/5

This was meant to be really good - it wasn't, in fact it was really slow. Basically it's a film about 3 black kids who at different points in the movie turn out to be gay lol not much more to it than that, other than it transpiring 'mom' was a junkie. I think people enjoying this film think it's really psychological. But I discern more nuance in the first few scenes of Terminator (which I saw last night, supposedly an 'action' film)

Silence 3.5/5

Good but too long, goes round in cartwheels a bit. Subtly psychological in the way so many Scorsese films are. You end up really believing all Japs are assholes- so the film succeeds in rendering u a retard.

Hacksaw Ridge 4.5/5

Is Mel Gibson a genius or what smile This is my favourite war film alongside Full Metal Jacket. Dare I say, it borrowed from that film somewhat too.

i caught up with 'shadow of the vampire' this weekend (it's currently streaming on shudder, for anyone who has a subscription to that service). i thought it was really terrific, & particularly liked the way they used title cards at times, just to remind us what era we're in.

.

and willem dafoe is hilarious & creepy & completely unrecognizable. my only problem with the movie is that every time his character went away, i pined for him to come back. 4/5

stars bruno s., a man whose mother was a prostitute who beat him severely enough to cause hearing damage when he was three. he then spent 23 years in institutions of one kind or another.

.

bruno s is a presence unlike any other i think i've ever seen in a film, perhaps the most unforgettable outsider i've ever seen on a movie screen. i kinda loved him, & i think most people will look at him and say 'i've felt like that at least once in my life.' or every day, maybe.

Fences (2016) An incredible film with amazing masterclass performances by Denzel and Viola (now all she has to do is win a Grammy and she will achieve the EGOT). I hope to see Denzel direct more films in the future, because he did a brillant job bringing this play to the big screen. I give this film a 4.5 out of 5 popcorn

Moonlight (2016) I watched this one the weekend and I have to say it deserved The Best Picture Oscar (even though I really wanted Hidden Figures to win). The perfomances were incredible (Naomie Harris was a revelation), thought provoking without being preachy and its seared in my brain and heart. I give this beautiful film 5 out of 5 popcorn
