Seems Mr George Michael of Wham! and a successful if sometimes bumpy solo career has died in his sleep of heart failure in his bed. The family has asked for privacy at this difficult time and has nothing to add at this early time. Now, I'm an aging punk but I was certainly aware of Wham! and it turns out the guy was only about a month younger than me, we are/were 53. I'm in no way even close to dying I think so this is a huge WTF moment for me. In Art School in 1985 I was chatting up a pretty female fellow student and she couldn't stop talking about how much she loved George Michael. So I said to her gently, "You do know he's gay don't you?" and I could not convince her it was true. Michael had just done an interview with Canada's Much Music where he was asked about it and he just said, "I don't discuss my sexuality." and I pointed this out to the poor woman that that was a sure sign he was gay. A straight man will always make it clear he's interested in women. And she still didn't believe me! I don't know what happened to her but I hope she gave up her George Michael quest because she would have had a lonely life. Anyway, that's my George Michael story. He was a pretty talented dude. I also think of his cameo in Ricky Gervais Extras series, which was hilarious and brave. I won't spoil that if you haven't seen it. But FUCK, what a lousy year is FUCKING 2016!!
