This is scary, please read!

Hello Fellow Orgers,

I just got an email about how people can get directions to your house by googling your phone number! I tried it and sure enough I was there.

If this concerns you then go to google.com, type in your phone number with area code separated with hyphens. If your number comes up, click on the telephone icon and it will give you directions on how to get it removed.

There are some freaky people out there...take the time to do this!

In general, if you're unlisted in the phone book, you won't show up on any general search engines...also in general, dunt give yer phone number out to anyone you don't feel you can trust beyond doubt... nod

Not mine either. But, my work phone number came up because it's printed on press releases.

Please...you gave me your number, directions to your house, said you'd place a key under the mat, said I could sleep on the couch, and told me where the extra blankets are stored... biggrin

Well ya know, the more I think about it the more I realise you can get the information easily anywhere. If you're listed in the phone book with your number and address you can go to mapquest.

So I guess the safest thing is to unlist your telephone number in the phone book.

No. He was a guy I met before I started dating Will. Oh my god was he gorgeous, and 6 foot 4 which you don't see too often. Anyway he blew me off one night so I never returned his calls (rightfully so evil) and every now and again I think about him.

When I got that email I looked him up first thing! Maybe I'll take a drive by his neighborhood wink

http://snopes.com/compute...google.htm

As to the issue of whether this Google feature is a shocking "invasion of privacy," there are a few points to keep in mind:

This feature is not "new" -- the PhoneBook service has been offered by Google for at least a year now.

This feature does not work for every phone number. Some classes of phone numbers, such as unpublished phone numbers (i.e., numbers belonging to customers who have requested that their local phone service providers not publish their numbers in printed phone directories or make them available through directory assistance), will not display.

The information displayed is compiled from a number of publicly accessible sources and is not unique to Google. There are many other web sources through which users can look up the same information.

Google has simply combined two different services readily available on a number of different web sites -- reverse phone directory look-ups and mapping/driving directions services -- into one step. Even without Google, it's a simple feat for any moderately knowledgeable web user to plug a phone number into a reverse phone directory web site to find the name and address corresponding to that number, then use an on-line service such as Mapquest to obtain directions to that address.

Here's something else scary -

If you live in a county in a state that has an online property tax search, you can put in any address and find out who lives at that residence, all the financial data relating to their property, their SS#, how much tax they pay/owe, etc.

And further, if you have ever been involved in a bankruptcy, many states have bankruptcy case information available online and anybody can put your name in and find out EVERYTHING having to do with your income, your bankruptcy claim (such as how much you owed and to whom you owed the debt), a listing of all personal assets you claimed and their worth, personal data like employment, kind of car you drive, etc. You can read all the bankruptcy documents filed and everything they contain.

It's quite frightening to see what is readily available for ANYONE to find out about a person, with only a first and last name to go on. MN has this type of search available and I think it's wrong to put that much info out there on the net. neutral
