Thanks thanks thanks.... KoolEaze - WHAT happened to your Linux adventures??!!!

The adventure continues.... I´ve downloaded it and was just about to install it but a good friend of mine who knows much, much more about computers than I do told me to save my data first , or otherwise I might lose everything on my HD. So, I need to save everything on several external HDs before I can install Linux. I downloaded the Cinnamon (Sarah) version but your Bodhi link made me have second thoughts. Maybe I should consider Bodhi instead of Cinnamon. But yeah, I don´t want to lose tons of data, so I need to do some backup first.

It sounds to me you need NAS server... should have had one all a long. What's your computer desktop or laptop, how old is it, and what 3rd party software do you use? I'd hit craiglist/ garage sales and pick up laptop. You can find cheap refurbished desktop / tower from $69.00 to $180.00 on eBay. You always have consider Linux and computer specs: motherboard/ processor ( 2core, 4core, AMD, Celeron, Intel, RAM (dd2 vs dd3) video card. this determines what you can realistically run and what Linux Distro best fit your needs. For example I dont't download Kodi on computers with a Celeron processor, it doesn't run smoothly.

You'll lose stuff only if you INSTALL Linux (or poke around with your hard drive from within it), not if you run it live!!
Yes, from gut I'd say that Bodhi WOULD be lighter on resources than Cinnamon - the latter is more weighty than MATE...
I only have the haziest idea of what a NAS server is, but have you noticed that TD3's advice always tends towards.....BUYING things!!....? Come on TD, he gave me a list of what computing he does, and it was all pretty simple.....let him get STARTED, for God's sake, no extra expense incurred....?!!

I´d love to run it live instead of installing it. But....I don´t know how it´s done. And I have no idea what a NAS server is. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is aimed more at the network file storage end of things, offering an easy way to make a ton of storage available to your network.
You can access your data from your NAS via smart phone, tablet, or laptop/desktop (of course). You can also send your data from your devices to you NAS for backup. The pic of the last NAS system, I had one and it cost about (in electricity) $350 a year to run. I now use a Raspberry Pi connect to 4 1tb HDD and it cost me (in electricity) $35. If you have that much data, its best to organize your data and have a backup. Our tech support out our church, this is our number one thing... retrieving data form dead HDD/SSD. People never back anything up. If you have a small amount of data, you can buy a 125 thumb drive. For some reason people don't back up their data.
To run a Linux Disto CD or thumbdrive live. If you have an older HP 5 years old or more... a Linux CD/thumb-drive should boot up automatically. Put the CD or thumbdrive in its port and restart the machine.
Its been my experience with Dell, Acer, Asus... you probably will have to go into your computer BIOS and change your computers boot order. To get in the BIOS hitting (contentiously) one of the F keys... most of the manufactures use either F1, F10, or F12 key. Once you are in your computers BIOS, you see several tabs.... click on "System Configurations"... which should open up to Boot Options: Again depending on the computer brand, the boot option can be change on that page or you may see another tab... "boot order". Right down the boot order you see on your computer... so you can change back when you are finished. F5/F6 are the keys that moves the boot order up and down... move either USB Hard Drive or CD/DVD ROM drive to the first option. Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.
Again put your hdd or thumbdrive into your computer and restart you computer, it will boot in to Linux Bodhi.

No, I'm very careful that people have an complete understanding of Linux before they take the leap. If Kool discovers he doesn't like Linux than he's screwed. Windows 7 OS ( I'll assumes he's on Win 7) are becoming harder to find and its cost steep. Yea can test Linux "Live" but more and more testing apps within a Live setting isn't always possible.
An example; I has a 12 HP desktops and I ran Lubuntu 16.04 "live", no issues, no issues with accessingWiFi. Download the Lubuntu Distro to these HP computers and for some reason, WiFi would work. WiFiworked when I ran Lubuntu Live.
But that's my opinion.
I'll keep my mouth shut, there's no one way to get to an objective, but you can confuse folks when people are saying up-teem different things at once.

...considering the other option is Windoze (which, he's been through ),...there IS no other option!

TD 3 and Domainator, thanks to both of you for your advice and help. I think you are both right. TD3 is right because it all DOES sound confusing to me, and domainator is right, too, because my Windows 7 system is indeed a bit slow and unreliable. My interest in Linux started with an ad I saw for a thumbdrive for 35 dollars that was actually nothing but a costly version of Linux on an ordinary flashdrive, and Domainator rightfully said it was a rip-off considering that you can get it for free and yet some companies charge you 35 dollars. TD 3 said " a Linux CD/thumb-drive should boot up automatically. Put the CD or thumbdrive in its port and restart the machine."
Well, that is exactly what I want to do. But you guys are like Formula 1 race car drivers AND excellent car mechanics when it comes to computers, whereas I am more like a person who buys a car and only knows how to fill his car with fuel and maybe knows how to put air in the tire if necessary. I hope you understand the comparison. I really know very little about computers and I don´t want to risk ruining my already flawed system. But...I will try to follow TD3´s instructions regarding the thumbdrive and booting from it. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
