Playstation VR

Has anyone on the org been able to try out the new virtual reality device for the Playstation 4? And if so, what did you think?

I've played my brother's oculus rift and I have to say, I'm sold on the whole VR thing. The problem is, I'm not willing to spend over a grand on it. The Playstation VR is only 400 euro so that's much more reasonable. Plus, I really want to play Batman VR....

Yeah, VR is the next big thing, by all accounts.

Why can't you get one of those things which make your phone into a VR headset? That's what *I'm* waiting for.....

I've tried that but it's not the same. The oculus rift/vive/psvr can actually trick your brain into thinking you're there. Its like you're no longer playing a game, you're acting in it. My ex got a psvr and let me have a go on Batman. I only played the prologue but that was enough to know that I really want it. It's weird looking into a mirror and seeing Batman staring back. Now, I'd prefer a Batgirl game or, better yet, a Supergirl game, but if I'm to have a temporary sex change, I'm only too happy to be Batman for a while.

He also let me play a demo he has called Kitchen. I knew nothing about it but I imagined a cooking game of some sort. It was, by far, the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. I know I'll be having nightmares tonight. No doubt about it...

The phone ones don't work as well. If you're interested in VR the best way of getting into it is through the Playstation 4. It works out cheaper than the likes of the oculus and vive. The resolution isn't as good but from a personal standpoint, I don't think the extra money they cost is worth it. Not to mention, a Playstation is cheaper than the kind of computer you need to run the oculus and vive.

And if you get the new ps4 pro, that will have better resolution in the VR, yes?

It probably depends on the game but I doubt there'll actually be much difference. If you already have a PS4 it wouldn't be worth upgrading for but if u don't own any variant of the PS4 already, then you'd probably be better off getting the pro.

The resolution isn't bad on the regular PS4 anyway. I played a bit of Batman and a few of the demos and they were quite good. I had another little play on it earlier and I think I have a new favorite game. The London Heist is absolutely brilliant!! It's like being in a Guy Richie movie.

I'm still on the PS3 so it's going to be the full and expensive upgrade with ps4 pro, VR, camera etc. Sheesh. But I've been waiting for this since the late 80s when VR 1.0 was in the arcades with huge head gear and shit graphics. London heist sounds good. I used to love playing the getaway. Open world London. My mates flat was even on it and the pub and shops he'd frequent so we used to shoot up his bedroom window. lol

Ace Combat and Star Wars are the ones I'm hanging out for in VR.

I'd love the star wars game but I'm not willing to spend 70 euro for Battlefront if you need that to play the VR mission. I hope they sell it separately.

Ace Combat, on the other hand, has me very interested. The 3DS version is fantastic so I can only imagine how good it will be in VR.

Off topic for a sec but you're still on ps3 right? Have you ever played any of the Mafia games? I've recently played Mafia 2 on the 360. Wow! If you never played it, I'd recommend it.

70 euros? It's down to $35 in NZ. 23 euros.

I've not played Mafia but will check out, thanks.

To be honest I'm not a big gamer due to time and the bigger games I find hard to master. Mainly use it to play Fifa with my nephew and for streaming media. I picked up red dead redemption though the other day, 2nd hand for 8 euros. Loving it.

Gamestop in Ireland are ridiculous with their prices.

Honestly, I'm not much of a gamer either. I only started playing fairly recently because I was bored and needed something to occupy my mind. I don't have a set job, and I can go months at a time without working. So my brother gave me his 360 and all his games. Now I've got all the consoles (wii u is my favourite) and I generally seek out the games with the best stories. I played Red Dead Redemption but I needed cheat codes to finish it. Bit too difficult for me but I liked it. Mass Effect, to me, was pure perfection. Either of those settings, western or space, would be ideal for the Playstation VR!

After playing Red Dead for a few
Days, I watched the first Ep of West World. Felt very similar. Loved it.

Maybe meet you for an online for a VR dogfight in ace
Combat one day. biggrin

Why do you say "the phone ones don't work as well"? Is the visual quality from a phone lesser than an Oculus, like, is there different type of hardware inside?? I don't see why that would be....?

I've come to the conclusion that I WILL need a phone anyway, one way or the other,... cause in India, with the discounts on the shopping apps n stuff, now it's starting to pinch the wallet.....

Well, the resolution isn't as good for one. But the main reason I wouldn't be bothered with the phones is that there's fuck all worthwhile apps that need it. For me, VR is all about putting you IN the story. Batman VR, London Heist, Resident Evil, Robinson The Journey and others won't be available on a mobile phone. VR on a phone is pretty pointless.

Nobody is going to make the likes of Batman VR and the other things I mentioned for a phone. Its just not going to happen. Ever! Look at what's been released so far for phones in terms of VR. There's literally NOTHING to be excited about.

You'd need hand controllers. It's just not practical to develop it to such a high spec degree.

Well I've never heard of any phone capable of doing what a PS4 can do. Even if it could, it's still not practical. How would you control it if the phone is being used as the screen. What controller are you using? How would it connect to the phone if there WAS a controller? You couldn't have it connected with a cable so you'd have to go wireless. IF that was a possibility, then you'd have to consider battery life for both the phone and the controller. There are far too many obstacles in creating a proper virtual reality experience for a phone.

Here's a good article that gives a full rundown and comparisons of the options from the phone ones to the pc and console ones.

Playing The London Heist is one of the most frightening experiences I've ever had. But in a good way. Just that bit where the huge gangster guy is in my face threatening me. I thought he was going to knock me out at one point. Brilliant!

Gosh. I've not even tried it yet. I have it though. I've had a go of the demo disc and some of the simple games are amazing like this building block thingy.

I booted up Batman and when you're hiding behind Bruce's mum and the guy who kills them gets up in your face, it's very surreal.

There's a movie app for free and there's a U2 video where you're on stage sitting in the middle of them all. I fogged up the lenses imagining that there was a Prince one.

Headmaster is amazing fun and feels so real.

Batman is my favourite. Its fairly short but I've played it like 10 times. The only thing I could fault it for is that it doesn't have the option to play as Batgirl. But I suppose, it IS called "Batman" and the story wouldn't make sense if you could be Batgirl so I'll give it a pass. Fingers crossed for a sequel though!

I couldn't get my head around that Headmaster game (pardon the pun). I keep hitting it wide or miles over the bar.

Just played some Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. My God, that's intense! One thing that kind of gets overlooked with VR is the sound. Not only can you see everything around you but you can HEAR it as well if you're wearing headphones or the ear buds that's provided. So there really is no escape when you're playing these types of horror games. Now, even though deep down you know you're safe, your two main senses are telling you you're about to be chopped up by some freak wearing a mask of someone else's skin so again, I have to make the point, VR really does a great job of immersing you in these situations.
