'The Walking Dead' Season 7: Who (if anyone) can kill Negan?

.

By Troy L. Smith, Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Just a handful of episodes into his run on "The Walking Dead" and it's clear Negan is the most destructive force ever to arrive on AMC's hit series.

However, like every villain that's been on "TWD," Negan has to have an end point, right? Maybe not.

[SPOILERS for the comic book ahead]

In Robert Kirkman's origin story, Negan's reign does come to an end. But the character is still alive and becomes a central figure in future conflicts, even fighting alongside Rick at one point.

No, Negan never becomes a protagonist or an anti-hero. He remains a brutal figure who kills at will. But, as we know, the show doesn't always follow the comic book.

I don't expect Negan to die anytime soon. But I also find it hard for the show to run its full course (Who knows when this thing will end?) without Rick or Daryl getting revenge on the man who killed two of their best friends.

After all, Rick did promise Negan he would kill him. And we know how Rick is with his promises. Just ask Gareth, the leader of Terminus (Oh wait, you can't because he's dead).

Kirkman could find an end for Negan at some point in the near future in the comic book. But aside from that happening, the show would need an extreme departure form the comic in order to kill Negan off.

The way things are going so far, it's clear Rick will somehow have to regain the upper hand on Negan. The two are now the show's central figures and the hero can't be weak for too long.

That could mean Rick eventually kills Negan or, at the very least, puts the Saviors' leader under his rule (Like inside the jail Morgan was building). But Rick isn't the only person who wants revenge on Negan.

Maggie has already expressed her desire to take Negan and the Saviors out. In the comic, Maggie morphs into a strong figure after the death of her husband and leads the Hilltop Colony into the war against Negan.

Daryl doesn't exist in the comic book. But you can bet he's already eying an opportunity to strike down Negan. The same could also be said for Dwight. While he's become one of Negan's most trusted allies, Dwight has also lost his wife to the Saviors leader and half his face.

Then there's Carl, whose relationship with Negan becomes a major storyline in the comic book. Carl wants Negan to kill Negan, which oddly earns the respect of the Saviors' leader.

The list of other characters - Jesus, Rosita, Sasha, Richard, etc. -- that have an axe to grind against Negan is endless. Who (if anyone) do you think could eventually kill Negan, either in the comic book or on TV?

Urgh. All of this bullying by Negan and his crew is a turnoff. Dude is certainly playing the role to a tee though because I hate his guts. lol It's just so hard to watch. Can't wait for the episode when Rick & co. finally get their revenge on this asshole.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I haven't worked myself to hating him. He's got one of those makes me stupid smiles.

But that light switch temper, scares me. One never really knows where they stand with him.

I thought for sure Michonne and Rick would break up but he said the right things for right now.

The origin story makes perfect sense.

SPOILER ALERT:

Apparently, Negan was a gym teacher before the apocalypse. (See when he refers to the "spirit award" in the 1st episode?)

He actually talks a lot like some football coaches I had growing up. He basically had Rick doing "up downs" till he puked and decided to play as he was coached.

That's why I love and hate him equally. He might deserve an Emmy nod for this one.

Also, Negan is the ABSOLUTE, PERFECT metaphor for America right now.

SPOILER ALERT: 'She's not mine!': Rick Grimes makes explosive revelation about 'daughter' on The Walking Dead

http://www.dailymail.co.u...-Dead.html

He is everyone's favourite post-zombie apocalypse dad.

But Rick Grimes revealed that Judith is not his real daughter on The Walking Dead on Sunday night.

The child is in fact the offspring of Rick's wife Lori and Shane, his police partner from before the start of the undead invasion.

Daddy cool: Rick Grimes revealed he is not really his daughter's father on The Walking Dead

The revelation came when Michonne (Danai Gurira) was furious that Andrew Lincoln's character had given everything away, but then he explained they were so outnumbered it was impossible to go against the bad guys.

The protagonist then recounted a story of his friend Shane and told her that Judith is not his real daughter.

'I know it, I love her she's my daughter but she isn't mine, I had to accept that, I did so I could keep her alive,' he said, vowing to 'raise and protect' her.

'This is how we live now,' he told Michonne.

Rick, who was holding Lucille, was teetering on the edge of killing Negan the whole time.

'In case you haven't caught on, I just slipped my d*** down your throat and you thanked me for it,' whispered Negan.

The newly submissive Rick confronted Spencer about his secret stash.

'We should have made a deal with them when we could,' accused Spencer.

Over-emotional behavior caused problems again. They lost all their guns, and almost ended up getting another person killed over it. Good job there.

Perhaps, but at least Carl is showing that he has balls and not willing to back down easily. Wish someone would off Spencer. He's been an issue for the past couple of seasons. Why is he even still alive? lol

i'vebeen wondering, what sort of longterm effect do you suppose playing some of these roles will have on the actors??

reading what Norman Reedus had to say about the episode entitled 'The Cell', makes me wonder whether behaviorism theory applies - if you act the part of a prisoner, (Norman said it was a difficult episode to film, he had to go to a really dark place in his head, emotionally and cognitively) wouldn't you feel depressed for a while after filming stops??

This episode was a little bit boring, but hey, not every episode can be great when a TV show lasts so long.

It was basically just Rick and his gang handing over their weapons.

Meh.

Can´t wait to see what´s going to happen in the Kingdom in the next episodes.

lol I'm just playing with you. Truthfully, I think he's using it that way purposely. I've never seen him doing that in other shows he's been in so I highly doubt it's a personal mannerism. But I did register the technique as menacing. The problem for me is he was introduced to my world as Izzie's Denny so I'm kind of skewed in my hating him department. But I do LOVE how he's playing the heck out of this role. I think he's perfect.

I don't know I liked this episode. It showed just how screwed up and menacing Negan is, and where Rick's mentality is. I don't see him as broken like I thought I would. He's still leading, still protecting. He hasn't checked out, the wheels are still turning rapidly. He understands his mistake.

He's not wrong in feeling what he feels, but him reacting and not thinking is a major problem. It's what Rick did and it's what screwed them all. For now.

I'm listening to this...

The “Science” of Zombies and the Walking Dead, with Robert Kirkman

Can we learn anything about anthropology, sociology, morality and physiology from fictional zombies? To find out, Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews Robert Kirkman, the Creator/Executive Producer of The Walking Dead, who says that his show is less about science fiction and more about the way people interact in extreme situations. To bring a scientific frame to the discussion of zombies, Neil and co-host Maeve Higgins talk with anthropologist Jeffrey Mantz, who once taught a course using zombies to examine how real world societies deal with fear, and Harvard professor Dr. Steve Schlozman, who wrote the fictional The Zombie Autopsies, which addresses the medical etiology of the zombie process as if it were real. You’ll find out how a virus like rabies can preserve muscle processes, and what role the ventromedial hypothalamus plays in zombies’ ravenous hunger. Explore how people establish affiliations during times of scarcity, how group dynamics influence the success of tribes, how charismatic leaders can bring their societies to wage war, and why moral relativism based on changing circumstances can make otherwise shunned and perverted behavior seem acceptable and even normal. You’ll hear why civilization is so important to establishing and preserving morality, and why the fear of a fragmented or non-existent civilization as the result of a major disaster may be at the heart of why The Walking Dead is so popular. Plus, Mona Chalabi explains mathematician Robert Smith?’s formula about zombie outbreaks, Chuck Nice asks people in Washington Square Park how they plan to survive in a zombie apocalypse, and Bill Nye compares the smallpox epidemic to a fictional zombie apocalypse to reassure us why science will save us.

NOTE: All-Access subscribers can listen to this entire episode commercial-free here: The “Science” of Zombies and the Walking Dead, with Robert Kirkman, as well as Neil’s extended interview with Robert Kirkman here.

Oddly I don't see them as slow. However, I did notice something, and it's probably just conjecture on my part.

S07E01 was brutal, but it was slow. It was drawn out, with flashes of other things to break up the crawling pace. The skulls didn't get bashed right off the bat. It was milked to all hell.

These "slow" episodes, like the Kingdom, or "The Cell" with Daryl - they really mimic the whole first episode of the season. They are drawn out, intense. It's a slow burn, and low sizzle. Again, not every episode is going to be rife with zombie slashing. There are stories to tell. Episode 1 had Negan pretty much telling his story, by his actions, to Rick's crew and to the audience. These subsequent episodes are doing the same thing. Think about Negan showing up this week, and his crew plundering goods, and even Negan sitting with Olivia to see if she dies or not because they can't find two guns. That had to be excruciating for the character to go through. The same kind of torture the whole crew went through while Abraham and Glenn were slaughtered. Slower pace, slow burn, laying the story(ies) out.

Every episode is reflective of the first in that way, and many others. I'm enjoying it. It's literally going day by day or week by week, and I say that because the timeline is clear. It's not just a random day with a few dozen walkers. It's systematic, just like Negan - although he appears to be a wildman, he knows what he's doing. And he's just cocky enough to pull it off for now.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I agree. To get to Abraham's sooner was logical because that was the cliffhanger. But to draw out until Glenn's is, of course, great editing and storytelling. You can't give the whole shebang in the first 10 minutes and expect people to stay tuned or interested.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
