First off, I knew next to nothing about the comic, so I don't have a purist POV on the movie. Minor spoilers.

I liked the whole metaphysical theme of the movie because I like that kind of thing. As always, I favor more character development, so it didn't satisfy me in that regard. The only one they even halfway developed was the main character. There is definitely another movie coming, so hope springs eternal.

Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect for this role. He is funny looking enough and has the right demeanor and approach to the character. He is a pretty versatile actor. I never noticed before but he has a big ass head.

I heard that George Takei took exception to Tilda Swensen playing The Ancient One because they did not casting an Asian but I thought she did a good job. Looks just like a thousand year old corpse too.

They cast Chewetel Ejifor as Mordo so that was another change. Benedict Wong was my favorite next to Cumberbatch though.

The storyline is as thin as usual and the dialogue is just about what we have come to expect with the one liners and all. Not a great movie but good fun nonetheless.

The visuals are excellent even though I don't do 3D. If you like that sort of thing then this movie is good for that.

They have got to get more creative with movie monsters, especially a metaphysical nemesis.

Stay until after the credits because there are two more scenes. One in the middle of the credits and one at the end.

Repeating what I said in the movie thread, the special effects are cool, but it's still very much a Marvel Studios formula movie.

After seeing over a dozen of these Marvel Studios films, I'm ready for something a little different. Like for example, a Machine Man movie made in the same style as Ex Machina. That would blow my mind. It would flop at the box office because my tastes are different from the masses, but that kind of film would be the first superhero movie to earn a perfect rating from me.

Ex Machina is a much slower and cerebral art film. The average person has no patience to sit through that.

Okay, so it differs from a stylistic standpoint but the actual premise of the film is pretty commonplace though, isn't it?

I suppose the premise in Ex Machina is commonplace in a movie about robots. It's pretty much the same premise right now in the Westworld TV show.

But style is primarily what I was talking about. I'd trade some action for atmosphere in a movie any day.

Marvel Studios won't gamble with these multi-million dollar franchises so I think they want people to know what to expect for the most part.

The one time Marvel made a semi-arthouse film was the first Hulk movie directed by Ang Lee and people didn't like it.
