So, we here in this house are avid watchers of Judge Judy. We have the DVR set to capture all new episodes whenever they're on. It comes on at 3pm and 3:30pm. We watch them over dinner. They also run repeats in syndication at 5pm and 5:30pm on a sister channel. (The same company here owns the ABC and Fox affiliates, and the same news people are on both channels, but programming is different overall.)

The ol' girl has been on 20 years, probably more than any other television judge sitting or former. We cannot stand that heifer on The People's Court. While anyone on TV has to be a bit of a show-boater, Milian is just horrible. It was great during the Wapner and Sheindlin days, but Milian does it a great disservice as the show that started it all for everyone.

I cruised the CW on the TV guide and the endless array of court shows is staggering. I really had no idea there was quite that many out there.

I like Judy's history in family court, her story, and her common sense - although it's said with a bit of huff and puff for the sake of a good show. A show that's been around for two decades, and is the #1 rated show.

Who is your favorite TV judge? How loyal are you in watching it daily?

I've watched Judge Judy and Judge Mathis for years. I still catch them both when I have a chance. They're both entertaining and I learn a few legal facts along the way, too.

I know a few of the Judges personally. David Young, Marilyn Milian, Karen Mills Francis and Alex Ferrer I worked with Judge Milian the longest. I like her and she is exactly as she appears on TV. They only thing I don't like about her is that she does too much screaming. Shrill females annoy the hell out of me. Of the ones I know, David Young is the nicest, smartest and most fair.

My favorite on TV is Greg Mathis. He makes me laugh and has a finely tuned BS detector. He also does great things for the community.

I detest Judge Judy's show. No sitting judge would ever be allowed to address litigants like that IRL, so her show is the most unrealistic, and she's the one who is least like her television persona. Her last book was good though.

Btw, court shows really are based on actual cases. The producers assistants actually spend days at the courthouses pulling cases to work with. How scripted they are varies greatly from one show to the next.

I've never heard of Young, Francis, or Ferrer. If Milian is exactly how she appears on TV, this is why I dislike her. She is shrill, and a showboater. It's just unnecessary, IMO. Anyhoo...

Mathis seems like a cool guy, but I don't watch his show. I've always heard good things about him outside the show, as you mentioned.

I do know the cases are real (just sayin', not arguin'.) Judy's crew talked about how they have scouts in a lot of cities, and they peruse cases and find litigants that are willing to go on the show. While these judgments are valid and binding, there are two things that people might not know (not that they're big secrets). 1) The judges often act as a mediator or arbitrator. So while the show is a 'courtroom', it's really no different than people sitting in a conference room hashing out their issues. 2) The show pays for the judgments. There's often a producer's account that pays out the money to the winning litigant. It's partly seen as compensation (for lack of a better word) for the person's time and efforts to be on the show. I know their flight, hotel, and food expenses are taken care of as well, which is just good practice in general. Nothing shady about any of that, it's just the ins and outs of these types of shows, but it's something people don't normally have knowledge of.

I think Judy just gets in business-mode when she's on TV. I've seen plenty of tape of her from her NY family court days, and her persona on the bench isn't much different. I don't mind that there's a heightened sense of speech when she's up there. It still beats TitsOnTheBeach Milian. hahaha (Did you see those pics?!?!)

By the way, there must be a scout in my area, because far too often we've seen people from this area or a suburb.

For the most part the shows are well produced and not as cheesy and obviously scripted as reality shows, which I hate because the scripting is so transparent.

The absolute worst is not Milian, it's Hot Bench. Trust me, nobody does that IRL.

Also, in our jurisdicton, the litigants have the option of going to mediation first and only appear before the judge if they waive mediation or they reach an impasse with the mediator.

Off the bench Marilyn is hella fun. I'm still friends with her real bailiff.

Isn't Hot Bench the one that Judy created or produces? I can't even imagine trying to watch that. haha And I have to high five you on the scripted reality situation on TV. It's a fucking true-ass cliché to say it's a wasteland. It's also cheap to produce, which is why it's in such plethora in the past decade more than ever. I'd rather watch repeats of Meerkat Nation, with it's pseudo storylines.

When I try to tell people the truth about realilty shows they get mad at me....I thought I was the only meerkat fan around though.

My calico Phoebe used to watch Meerkat Nation all the time. She was fascinated by it.

MacGyver, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour. Hollywood is running out of ideas. Let's not forget they already "rebooted" Dallas (which was pretty decent actually, but canceled), Hannibal (more of an extension of the story), and Hawaii Five-O (which is still going). The Exorcist is getting a TV show now. We already have Damien and Lucifer for those who need that sort of thing.

I watch very little TV. I have to be choosey. 60 Days In caught my eye for whatever reason, but being an anarchist, I typically hate cop shows like that. COPS, Jail, etc. are not on my radar anymore.

I'm getting into Hot Bench. Though through out the show judge Tanya Acker Hair style and gold necklace keeps changing

I also got a little crush on Judge Lauren Lake. Not sure if her show is still on or not. It's no longer playing where I live

I'm ok with the lady judge with the peoples court. Doug Llewelyn is back on the show

Divorce court bores me. I like the judge but I'm tired of hearing young couples bitch about how much time their partner plays videos games or doing facebook

I remember when Judge Mills Francis first became a judge and the other female judges were jealious of her. They were cheesin in her face and catty as hell behind her back.

Ol' Joe was canceled because of declining ratings. CBS claimed they paid him $20M a year, but he says he "only received" $5M. (Uh, we ain't hurtin' for ya and that $5M, Joey.)

I know he was held in contempt of court for a hearing he was part of, but I was sure he had a drunk driving situation or something. I thought I remember seeing his mug shot, and that could have been for the verbal sparring with the judge during the contempt charges.

He was supposed to have a new show this fall - sort of a court room and talk show mix. I'm not sure if it's on or not. I think it was Real Verdict or True Verdict. I don't even remember where I heard that.

Joe Brown, the former TV court and criminal court judge who ran for Shelby County District Attorney General, is unable to practice law in Tennessee after the state Supreme Court placed him on disability inactive status.

Disability inactive status designates that a lawyer is temporarily disabled and incapacitated from practicing law. Lawyers can resume practice when they prove to the state Supreme Court that the disability has been removed.

"Judge Brown is suffering from what hopefully will prove to be a temporary disability as a result of complications following from Type II Diabetes and the effects of prescribed medication for the condition combined with hypertension and stress," according to a statement by production company Celebritunity . "Judge Brown urges others to preserve their health by having regular check-ups, following their doctor's instructions, dieting properly and exercising regularly. He also wishes to thank his friends and fans for their expressions of concern and support."

Brown had a petition for discipline pending against him from October 2015. The petition has been suspended indefinitely until he can be removed from inactive status. The petition stemmed from an outburst in Shelby County Juvenile Court during his run for district attorney general in 2014.

If a lawyer cannot successfully defend himself because of a disability, the proceeding cannot continue, said Sandy Garrett, chief disciplinary counsel of the Board of Professional Responsibility.

"He brought it to our attention," Garrett said.

In an order transferring him to disability status, the court wrote that documentation from Brown's medical care provider was duly considered.

Supreme Court rules keep documents other than the order transferring Brown to disability inactive status confidential.

A confidential assistance program is available for lawyers, judges and law students for help with a range of issues.

"Many times the issues are self-reported by the attorney, who asks for the assistance of the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program," said Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Chris Craft who works with the TLAP in helping lawyers in need. "We want to encourage attorneys who are having a difficulty to self-report and get help."
