"Univision Communications, a Spanish-language media company, agreed on Tuesday to buy six of Gawker's blogs in a bankruptcy auction for about $135 million. Gawker.com, the only Gawker blog not included in the sale, will shut down next week after 14 years of operation. "

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Gawker.com to shut down next week

. . .

It represents an abrupt end for a site that helped define a snarky tone and style that are now ubiquitous across digital media. The site also served as a springboard for some of the internet's best-known writers and editors.

But Gawker.com had its critics, many of whom are likely celebrating Thursday's news. The site's unsparing coverage prompted several lawsuits, including the one brought by the former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan that sent the parent company into bankruptcy.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, filed an invasion of privacy suit against Gawker Media after the namesake site published a portion of his sex tape in 2012. A Florida jury awarded Hogan $140.1 million in damages earlier this year, which motivated both Gawker Media and Denton to file for bankruptcy this summer.

Hogan's lawsuit was financed by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, himself a target of Gawker's coverage. Thiel, who has acknowledged that he's bankrolling other lawsuits against Gawker Media, said in a New York Times op-ed earlier this week that he will support Hogan "until his final victory."

Gawker is appealing the Hogan verdict, but Denton said in his memo that even if the appellate court rules in its favor, "Peter Thiel has already achieved many of his objectives."

Yes, let's celebrate that a super-rich guy can shut down a media org if they've written something he doesn't like.

That doesn't preclude it being a worrying development.

And what does any of this have to do with Prince?

I'm sorry which millionaire are we most worried about? Which amazing reputable media organizations are in danger after this precedent?

This is like that time my boss who owned two $2 million homes told me I couldn't quit because they would "go under" without me. I don't make any of that money and I live in a 800 sq ft condo. I couldn't decide which (of their) $2 mil homes I should be most worried about. So I quit.

The Star Tribune is not a tabloid. Despite some questionable posts over the years, neither was Gawker.

The whims of a billionaire being enough to shut down a media orginaztion is worrying, regardless of their reputability. It sets a worrying precedent, especially in an age where magazines and newspapers (even the respected ones) are struggling to stay afloat.

-- Don't you think the Star Trubine is acting like a tabloid by seeking to open Prince's divorce file. I guess you did not read the article because Gawker was conducting tabloid journalism.

/// The whims of newspaper having the power to open a sealed document sets a precedent that is troubling. In addition, Gawker had their day in court they lost they only went after Hulk Hogan because they did not think he would be able to afford the litigation. Real nice people 😳

Oh for crying out loud, why was Thiel mad at them? Oh yeah, because they also went after him. Sheesh...

Nick Denton declared bankruptcy. He's broke.

Denton was a tool but the biggest tool there was a guy named A. J. Daulerio.

Gawker wasn't really a muckraking site. Nor was it the "new Spy Magazine". It was a hit-and-miss blog, essentially, with several talented writers.

Its specialty sites, Jezebel, Deadspin and io9, among others, remain operational. It's only Gawker that has disappeared.

It was a blog that said it practiced "journalism" except when it wasn't practicing "journalism". They changed their description of themsleves to fit the day. They did some good work but they were definitely into mudraking when they wanted to be.
