This so annoys me - the assumption that vegetarians miss meat so much that they want to eat stuff that smells, looks and tastes exactly like dead flesh (otherwise known as meat). I've stopped eating Quorn products as their packaging clearly says 'Chicken Nuggets' when they contain no chicken at all (the same applies to many of their other products, for example Gammon Steaks).

Consider this quote from the article:

'But most importantly, this potato protein and coconut oil-based burger patty tastes like blood, which means that people want to eat it, myself included'

Trust me - I (and many other veggies) have absolutely ZERO interest in eating anything that tastes like blood. This doesn't excite me, it disgusts me.

HOWEVER - if meat eaters are choosing to eat this type of product over actual dead carcuss then hats off to them. I'm all for people eating less meat and more plants. It's just not for me in any way, shape or form.

I tasted a veggie burger once and nearly threw up. I can't imagine anybody eating that kind of crap voluntarily. I'll stick with the real thing, thank you.

Just noticed this report is from alternet. You know a lot of what's published on there is bullshit, right?

Given that meat these days don't taste like meat, that may not be a major feat for veggies.

Double eek They used to sell Linda McCartney frozen food products at my local supermarkets and then they disappeared. Didn't know there were still food products made with her name. Ditto for Woolworth's in Australia! I worked at one in the U.S. many years ago...and then when the chain finally went out of business here, I thought that was it everywhere. lol

In England Linda McCartney products can be found in all major supermarkets. They have quite a big range. Personally I don't like them but they are very popular. Sadly, Woolworths has gone bust over here as well.

Bullshit. All meat eaters pull the 'you need the protein from meat' line, it draws attention away from the need to deal with the fact you won't give it up because you like it too much. Fact is, we all need a balanced diet and a balanced diet is what is good for the body. That does NOT have to include having to consume the bodies of dead animals.

Seriously though, a lot of what's published is exaggerated or just plain fabricated. I know one of the "journalists" who writes for alternet.

But... why? I can see the appeal for those trying to transition, I guess. I was a vegetarian for about two years solely because I did not want meat. Like literally woke up one day and just said, "nah," and said, "nah," every day for twoish years. I sure didn't want a meat substitute. Not for any opposition or ethical reasons, more like what's the point.

yeahthat

When I try to explain to my meat-eating friends why I don't like meat subsitutes it's really difficult - I don't want to eat dead cow, therefore why would I want to eat fake dead cow? A lot of my meat-eating friends hate the dog meat trade and I say to them 'Would it be alright if they produced fake dog meat? Would you want to eat that?' Mostly they say no and that's my point - I see cows (& pigs and sheep) the same as dogs. I don't want to eat them & I sure as hell don't want to eat no fake substitute of them.

PS. I repeat from my earlier post that I have no beef (pun intended) with meat-eaters eating fake meat. I sometimes cook it for my parents or my kids friends when they come and stay. I'd rather they ate fake meat than the real thing. Therefore I do think it has its place in the market but, for me, nah.

seems to be a think some here like to do... 2freaky4church1 does it often... the suggestion (at least when done to me) is that I get my orders or talking points from right wing sources and then come here and repeat them! Now I have been accused 100 times of being a fox bot... so the other day i watched fox and I see what they mean....but when i went to cnn i saw all the left wing stuff I see here... But it is an attempt to insult you and to make it seem the thought is not valid.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up. Although, I wouldn't consider myself to be right or left wing but there you go. If 2Freaky wants to get his news from alternet, then I'm not going to try to stop him. But like I said, I know someone who writes for them. The majority of stories are pure fabrication and the rest are exaggerated bullshit but if people believe those things to be true, that doesn't bother me.

Ready for the BUG Mac? Burgers made from insects could transform our diets and help save the planet

C-fu is a bit like tofu but made from crickets or mealworms

A team of university students has developed a tofu-like meat substitute made out of insects.

.

Just like tofu, C-fu is extremely versatile and can be used to make bug burgers, pâté and other protein-based meals or used to make cream cheese - and even ice cream.

"We've all eaten a lot of the product," Lee Cadesky, who heads up the team, told Mirror Online.

.

"We taste every batch and don't serve anything that we don't think is worth eating."

The bug meat has been designed to make more people consider eating insectsinstead of conventional animals proteins such as beef, lamb and chicken.

Not only are insects extremely high in protein, but they also emit a fraction of the greenhouse gases, require little or no water and can be raised on food waste.

C-fu in its raw form. YUMMY!C-fu in its raw form. YUMMY!

To make C-fu, the team developed a patent-pending technique for extracting protein from creepy-crawlies.

.

This technique allows them to make a bug meat product using a whole range of different insects, each with their own unique flavours.

The C-fu can then be shaped and cooked - frying it seems to produce the best results.

.

So far, the most delicious insect has proven to be the waxworm, which tasted like "very delicate scrambled eggs" and looked like "a chicken McNugget” after a quick fry.

.

Unfortunately they are also very expensive, so the team is focussing on the blander, but easier-to-mass-produce mealworm.

"The taste is bland with some eggy and nutty notes. Sometimes it has a slight fishiness which works great with citrus or soy," he tells us.

Some experiments haven't worked out so well.

.

"We started off experimenting with crickets and superworms but they tasted awful," he adds.

Tasting the C-fu product

Despite their efforts, the C-fu team still has a major hurdle to overcome: consumers thinking insects are gross.

.

Although things are starting to change with the arrival of companies like Exo and Chapul selling insect flour and protein bars.

"There's lots of great ecological and nutritional reasons to eat insects, we want to show that they can taste great too and make really exciting, novel foods," says Cadesky.

.

To anyone horrified by the idea? Cadesky says just try them.

"I totally understand people's apprehensions but I find that kind of attitude limiting. This is an exciting new area that we're just starting to sink our teeth in. Live a little and join us!"

.

Cadesky and the rest of the C-fu team are heading to Portugal to compete for a $10,000 prize offered in the Thought for Food Challenge, designed to find innovative ways to help feed 9 billion people by 2050.
