I think Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Sleeping Beauty (1959) should be in the top 10.

I think Star Wars should have been number one but I'm glad to see Highlander represented. One of my earliest memories is my uncle taking me and my sister for the weekend and showing us Highlander on video. I would have been only 4 or 5 at the time so perhaps I was far too young for all the beheadings but what a great film.

Dark Crystal, Clash of Titans, Neverending Story, Time Bandits, Legend & Conan woulda been higher up, at least in top 10/15 if it was me. Can't believe they've not even included Excalibur! (81)
(I watched 'Stranger Things' this weekend & LOVED it btw)

Yeah I noticed neither Star Trek movies nor Star Wars made the list, I wonder if they are seen as more SciFi as oppose to Fantasy. I thought in story land it was all the same.

I don't think I've ever seen Highlander, which is weird.

I'm not sure about Star Trek, I've only ever seen the first of the recent set of movies, but Star Wars is definitely fantasy. George Lucas himself said he considers it to be fantasy rather than sci fi based on it not adhering to actual science and it having all the fantasy story elements like magical powers (the force), high wizards (Obi-Wan and Yoda), a young boy plucked from obscurity and thrust into saving a Princess.

Highlander is brilliant. The sequels are complete and utter trash though...

I would take The Fall over anything in the top 10 w/ exceptions for The Wizard of Oz and Labyrinth. And if you are going to include Time Bandits, then we've agreed that time travel movies qualify. With that in mind, where the hell is Somewhere in Time?!!

Two underrated movies. Time Bandits makes my top 10.

Empress

Any list that names "Pirates of the Caribbean" as best anything, is a joke. Those movies are awful.

LOTR has beautiful cinamatogrophy, but boring as hell.

The first pirates movie was a bit of a romp. The sequels were pretty bad though.

Lord of the Rings is boring???? Surely you can't be serious. Next to Toy Story and Back to the Future, it's my favourite trilogy of all time. I watched the extended versions of all 3 movies back to back and then a few weeks later, I did it again.

"Legend" while visually great, is a fairly bad movie. The plot is very bad.

"Willow"???? mad

My top fantasy (in no particular order) that immediately come to mind are:

Conan the Barbarian

Excalibur

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Spirited Away

Star Wars

The Wizard of Oz

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (that first one is the best one!)

Silent Hill (horror fantasy)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the first one had the most engagement and feeling of wonder since it was also an intro to the world for me)

E.T. (this is fantasy not scifi)

The Hobbit (the 1977 animated version)

King Kong (1933)

King Kong (1976) I love this! Hurt me.

Baron Münchhausen

Did I mention Excalibur. The list doesn't include it. mad mad mad mad

Odd choice for a list; fantasy could essentially mean any film if we're talking about something that's made up. They really needed to define it more. Did they mean fantasy as in traditional 'sword and sorcery'? Can't argue with the number one choice though biggrin

I don't have the magazine in front of me, but I'll go back and check to see if they defined fantasy.

I watch the first one regularly, and to think I scoffed at it when it first came out.

a few choices I'd call suspect, for sure (thor at 16 gets a raised eyebrow from me), but a few really imaginitive ones. Purple Rose of Cairo, in particular, is a movie that I would have never thought of that way, but it makes good sense on reflection and I love that it's there.

Nope. No criteria given. It just goes into listing them and telling the reader somethings about the movie. Some only got a paragraph, some got several pages.
