The Colour Purple

I saw this yesterday (for the 1st time),.... and it immediately brought to mind Gloria Naylor's writing, who'm I've discussed on this site before.....very similar stories. Does anyone here wanna discuss it?

The Color Purple is one of my favourite books (top 5). I have seen the movie several times too. The book is beautifully written and I love Celie. I have read many Alice Walker books and have enjoyed all of them. I've also read Gloria Naylor too.

I would like to see the play someday, but haven't had the opportunity yet. I have read the Color Purple at least 5-6 times over the years and never get tired of it. Simply a wonderful book and so deserving of the Pulitzer Prize. I cry each time I read it or watch the movie. It should be required reading for everyone in high school.

These 3 are incredible books. Another recommendation is The Same River Twice.

They really are. Wish more people read the other two tho. 'Temple' is phenomenal, I've been telling everyone about it since it's release. I adore Miss Lissie & Mr Hal. The way they always adjusted that shawl over Uncle Rafe's tv before a conversation. When they painted each other's portrait etc etc etc.
Yes, 'Same river' was interesting, lupus & caring 4 her Mother during all the backlash...
I really love 'The third life of Grange Copeland' & 'Anything we love can be saved' too.

Actually no, I didn't bawl - I was more like, *numb* - watching in shock and horror at everything unfolding before me on the screen!!....... I just couldn't react to it! I had to actually watch the exploits of a paedophile for so long.....!!

As a side note - it was strange to see Whoopi Goldberg so young! smile - another movie of hers I greatly like is Corrina Corrina, and there she's much older....

And Oprah Winfrey too!

It's strange how Spielberg made this movie - how come this movie was not made by a black movie maker?? It seems *compulsory*.....

Btw, did anyone see "BFG"? How is it? smile

First saw this at the age of 9 on network TV one lonely, friendless night. Cried when Celie found her letters and still do.

This is one of those movies that stops me and I have to sit and watch whenever it comes on.

I was reading up on this history of the making of it and watching a tv bio on Alice Walker(very interesting woman) and she seemed to have gotten a lot of resistance when this came out.

I read the book and saw the movie when it first released in theatres. The theatre was packed, and a black woman sitting in front of me bawled like baby when Mister dragged Nettie out of the house and threw her in the road. It must have hit home for her or some thing because she just lost it.

It is one of my favorite movies, too and I watch it every time it comes on TV. I've seen it at least ten times or more. The book is excellent also.

Watched it again for the first time in years - just so sad and bleak. It is still good, but an upsetting movie to watch. The acting is incredible, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and a newcomer called Oprah Winfrey, almost hard to believe Sophia was to be the first billionaire African American woman and a mass media mogul.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Yes, I read the book when I was in high school, a couple of years after the movie came out. I loved it. I was surprised that, in the book, Miss Celie and Albert actually became friends after she left.

Yes. I remember Spike Lee being one of the most vocal people panning the movie, complaining about the fact Spielberg was the director and how it portrayed black men in such a negative light. Alice Walker explained this was not about portraying black men in any light. It was the story of one woman.

Interesting fact Tina Turner, Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle were all offerred the role of Shug Avery but all of them turned it down. Phyllis Hyman accepted and they actually started filming with her but she was soon fired for being too difficult. So they hired a professional actress, Margaret Avery, and she lip-synched to Tata Vega's vocals.

Tina Turner would have been wonderful, I could see her as Shug, but I feel the abuse themes of the movie (Okay Shug was never Abused but Celie was) may have been too much for her as her revival was just starting and memories of Ike may have been fresh in her mind.

.

Plus she was kicking ass playing Aunty Entity at the time in Mad Max 3, she is awesome in that.

Which author? I looked it up on Amazon, and there are several books with the same title but by different authors. Are you talking about Alice Walker's edition?

You know, I've never seen Titanic...You have given me that extra push to watch it for the first time but I'm not making promises (Leonardo is my Dawg).....I've seen The Color Purple well over a million times...I think my favorite scene is when Suge Avery is singing at the Juke-Joint on a Sunday afternoon, then she hears the Church choir and she takes off singing down the road....The Holy Spirit took-hold of her Soul and she had to confront her Father on HIS turf...Powerful...

Another great film about black women suffering through heartache and hardship is "The Women of Brewster Place." Try to get the VHS version becasue the DVD is missing some good scenes. VHS is the original TV production.
