Aren't they? It warms my heart because so many people today seem to think that family life is lame or something.

Like you said, dem need to mind dem own punanny.... lol

mushy

lol

I just wanted to share my experience on the matter in light of the negativity (tho' I do realize that most of it was tongue-in-cheek).

Some people are nurturing, parental types, and some people aren't. Doesn't make anyone more or less of a person either way.

Great thread.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is PurpleJedi, and I am a willing father.

My ex & I - shortly after getting married - had a conversation about starting a family.

Not as to WHY, but rather when. We were young and our careers were nascent, so we had to decide as to whether we should have kids "now" that we were young and full of energy, or later when we had money. We chose for the "now". We had 3 kids, and yes I've spent the better part of the past 20 years money-poor.

As to the "why"? It was a no-brainer. I love children. We loved children. Before we had our own, we would take my nieces out - to the park, to the beach, etc. and truly enjoyed it.
shrug I don't know. Maybe it's genetic? Maybe social conditioning as some have claimed. But whatever the case, I love kids. Even now, at 45 years old, I still would have a baby if the right woman came into my life.

I won't say that it's easy, nor will I say that it's for everyone. Heck, even my ex wound up tapping out. Kids are with me now (as she's off exploring what makes her happy in life).

But for me...watching these kids grow up...from these tiny little balls of flesh into (now) young adults has been a very rewarding experience. All of our adventures and trips and experiences; it gives me joy. Each one is a part of me. Their happiness brings me happiness. Their sadness brings me consternation. Their laziness brings me high blood pressure. razz

Now that they're teenagers and going through their teenage angst, I still love them to death. All these years later, I'm still money-poor, ...but I feel rich in my own way.

Jazz pianist Bill Evans said something to the effect of, before having children, he did not feel a connection to people/the world and how that changed upon the arrival of his first child. Psycho Mantis (from the video game Metal Gear Solid) believe people have children because of a selfish desire to pass on their genes. As for me, I would have a child to get out of things like work and social obligations. "sorry I can't come to your band's show tonight. My child has a thing." "Sorry boss, I have to leave the office early today. My child has a thing."

I remember in the 80s everyone had 2-3 kids in my neighborhood. The "now we are twos" that KingBAD mentioned (that was a great post) became fives, doubling and outnumbering the "now we are twos" often by 1+. It was so cute we all had minivans and shit. Now we are in our 30s, our parents are divorced, our careers are going nowhere but required for survival and we are miserable, watching the things we used to love disappear or become unobtainable.

.

The population boost after the comfort from "winning" a few World Wars and a group labeling themselves prematurely as the greatest generation (ever?) is still poisoning the mentalities of our parents and their cohort as they approach their 70s (the "baby boomers"). When the people from the 60s hit their 60s things started to really turn for the worse because they were set up to fail from the start - their children are set to inherit the blame. Hudson brought up a great point that many millenials simply aren't interested, I'd like to add that many of the millenials from the 90s are the children of single parents and wouldn't want to choose that path for their offspring.

if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Have always been happily married and kids just seemed like the next progression.
She has always been a great mother. Me? Dont care for kids. Love my two, but they have been a handful. They were great as kids but terrible as teens. I just hope they grow up as adults that i can hold conversations with, because this teen stuff is for the birds. Oh well, thats my life.
Would i recommend? Absolutely not!
Be satisfied with your choice in a spouse and take vacations, go dancing, be untied. Kids kill your sense of being yourself. And for more than 18 years
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
