Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin dies in car accident

This is a bizarre death. He was found by his friends dead pinned between his own car and a mail box.

“Star Trek” and “Alpha Dog” star dies in a car accident

Film actor Anton Yelchin, famous for his roles in “Star Trek” and “Alpha Dog,” has died at the age of 27.

“Actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning,” his publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed. “His family requests you respect their privacy at this time.”

The actor was fatally pinned between his own car and a brick mailbox at his San Fernando Valley home, police confirmed to TheWrap.

Yelchin was en route to meet his friends for a rehearsal when the accident occurred. After he did not show up, friends responded to his residence where they located him deceased by his own vehicle, police said.

Yelchin was best known for playing helmsman Pavel Chekov in the rebooted “Star Trek” film franchise. “Star Trek Beyond” is slated to open July 22, 2016.

The thing is, it wasn't a typical car accident. It sounds like he had gotten out of his car, and it rolled back into him. He was pinned between the car and a gate. So it could have been in a steep driveway or something like that, and it just rolled into him. What a horrid way to go, though.

I loved him as an actor. He was just so good at what he did. I loved him in !Huff; and two of my favorites was Charlie Bartlett, and Jack with Stockard Channing and Ron Silver.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Just saw this online. What a loss, that guy had a gift. I saw him in something recently and he was so good. I always liked his choices in independent movies. RIP Bro.

This is tragic. The shifter in his car (a Jeep Grand Cherokee) has a really confusing shift pattern. There have been many instances of people thinking they had the transmission in park, but actually having it in neutral. It sounds like that's what happened to this young man, and the car rolled into him and crushed him.

There have been 41 injuries linked to the shifter design. The manufacturer had recalled the vehicle due to the confusing shifter pattern:

(t)his morning, LAPD officials confirmed to Jalopnik that Yelchin’s SUV was a 2015 Grand Cherokee, meaning it was among the vehicles covered by Fiat Chrysler’s shifter recall from April.
