rd, you need a vakashun. Right NOW!!! I'm assuming you don't have kids, so get yo ass on a plane to Negril. Run up and down the beach nude, do a couple of cart wheels in the sand. If you straight -- get you a nice, black and sexy Jamaican mama, and let her be your faithful concubine. If you gay, hop on a plane to SanFransico, and do... whatever gay people do for fun. Just get the fuck outta here!!!

I think I hear you RD smile I've made some very different choices from most people I know, just trying to get where I'm going. That place where my soul is happy doing what I'm doing. The 9 to 5 never appealed to me. The kids have yet to appeal to me. The husband still alludes me, lol! I kind of admire the folks who don't want much more than that in life - seems simpler, somewhat easy to obtain & involves less heartache (no shattered dreams to deal w/).

The downside is I feel like a complete alien in most circles, especially w/ friends who are on the "white picket fence/look how little Johnny is growing up" path. I could die tomorrow having never realized my dreams & that thought makes me wish I had money & shit RIGHT NOW! But I'm hoping to grow old & proud of staying focused, being a little broke & having the guts to pursue my dreams. I keep trying to get THERE, pushing hard, balancing work for "them" w/ work for ME. If I get my way, my shit won't be traditional - it'll be carved out just the way I want it. People may still look @ me like I'm an alien, lol, but I'll be a happy one smiling a knowing smile... pray
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

RD-
I've been feeling this for about 3 years and I'm with you.

It's like hard work does get you some where, the picket fence, paying property taxes, 2.5 kids (and what's .5 of a kid?).

Unplugging from the Matrix sounds good in theory but giving up money and struggling seems ignorant.

I was telling someone recently that if someone would have told me as a kid that it was about sprinklers and what Johnny did last week, I would've done things differently. I'm not sure what but I'm working on a plan. I have to, I was born to do great things.

I'm not "empty inside" either, I just need to open a record store too I guess lol

the thing of it is ..you need money--financial security to throw it all away in some respect. I mean money is the difference between not giving a shit and being free of society and its restraints. Having money is th e difference betwen being a bum on the street and being free period. Thats why Marlon Brando has it good and did the smart thing--he made his millions and bought a fuckin island in Tahiti (or rents lol) and stays the hell there lol. Tom Cruise etc making 20 mil a pic and still making moves and being on the scene..wtf...give me 5 mill and I will disappear from the face of the earth lol

I really liked thier(Toad The Wet Sprocket) All I Want song but everytime it came on I thought I was gettin ready to hear So Alive by Love and Rockets

lol

You're so right about the finanical security thing...I think those of us who grow up having to build on meager beginings spend most of our lives working for financial security so that we can be free. The sad thing is that when you finally get close to that point, most of your life is over.

i agree rdhull, the picket fence looks damn boring, the pta sounds stuffy and freedom rocks. i LOVE my independence. love being able to pack up and go if i want to, when i want, without having to justify myself and i love having the money my job provides so i can BUY that plane ticket to belize if i want to

Anxiety

At the end of the day, I think the ideal outcome is a BALANCE between domestic stability and the ability to follow one's bliss...both are compromised when staking out the balance, but the compromise shouldn't feel too bad if you're right with yourself and what you're looking for.

Some people run away from stability and live transient lives. Some people grab onto the white picket fence and won't let go for anything. I guess the real question is: are they happy? Who knows?

That can be true & it's something I fear boxed It's an individual thing. I'd rather take the chance on this long road up a steep hill than to plod along w/ a fake smile going, "hey, at least I have security!" neutral

i'm at that place, too. i always ask when do i stop believing in my dream in order to pay the bills and i've reached that point.

i'm ready to trade in this life for the husband and 2.5 kids and the white fenced two story rambler, but i guess what i realized that i am looking for is the feeling. the feeling of completeness and security that you get with that type of life along with the individuality and creativity that comes with doing what you love.

i've realized that eventhough i have to "sell-out" right now to get myself back on track financially, i don't have to give up the feeling.

it's been my observation that there IS no such thing as 'security'. security is a myth, whether it's financial security, romantic security, whatever. all that can end literally overnight when the unexpected happens. this is why imo it's really important to live in the moment, enjoy today and not sacrifice everything for some long-term goal down the road.

This is the truth, the whole truth, and nothin' BUT the truth.

I am one of those who set out at a young age to get married, have 3 kids, buy a house, etc. Now that we are struggling to make ends meet...things don't seem as "green"as I had thought they'd be. My wife and I recall the carefree days of sleeping 'till noon on Sundays (sigh) and taking vacations amongst palm trees...and we constantly tell ourselves; "we should've had kids later...we should've traveled more...we should've, we should've..."

THEN we have friends our age who are living that life (traveling through Europe on a whim...buying fancy clothes...dining at hip eateries...) and they are constantly complaining about how much they want to get married and have kids and have a house, etc. etc. etc.

Simple truth is: you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone.

RD, I am SO feeling you.

I have a plan that I'm following to prevent White-Picket-Fence-Itis.

Step one: get a big, highly visible tattoo. This way, I can never pretend to be a yuppie, because I have a big ol' tattoo wrapped around my wrist.

Step two: uhhh. . .

But so far, it's going ok. smile
