10/10 or 5 of 5. If it wasn't for Joan Allen and the Dad actor on screen (I know them), I thought it was the girl and boy, for real.

10/10 is right! Awesome movie. Both Brie and Jacob were amazing. I read the book several years ago and it freaked me out. I could not put it down! The movie was almost as good as the book.

Stalker

I found this impenetrable, and it's certainly slow-moving, but it's undeniably filled with many great images, and as confounded as i was, i was not bored, i did not feel restless, and i'm glad i watched it. i have no idea how you even rate something like this, but it's certainly worth a watch for those who fancy a challenge or a bit of a trip into the deep end.

the films of andrei tarkovsky are available for free on youtube. these are legitimate streams, put there by the studio for which he made the films.

The Countess (2009) - A 17th century Hungarian countess embarks on a murderous undertaking, with the belief that bathing in the blood of virgins will preserve her beauty.

I was interested in this for Julie Delpy's direction. I like her comedies 2 Days in Paris and 2 Days in New York, but this drama not so much. It's an illuminating take on the story of Elizabeth Bathory, however I found the execution to be very average. 2.5/5

Lolo (2015) - Violette, a 40-year old workaholic with a career in the fashion industry falls for a provincial computer geek, Jean-Rene, while on a spa retreat with her best friend.

I attended the U.S. premiere which was followed by a Q&A session with writer/director Julie Delpy. I'm not a fan of comedies in general, much less screwball comedies, but this one appealed to me--maybe because I like how Julie Delpy handles comedies or just because it's French. smile 3/5

Tonight I attended another first showing.

JJ Abrams does it again, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. John Goodman was fantastic, and there were plenty of twists and turns. A sequel is inevitable.

Notorious (1946) - A woman is asked to spy on a group of Nazi friends in South America. How far will she have to go to ingratiate herself with them?

Ingrid Bergman was so lovely. I should really watch more of her movies. 4/5

Both of them did. It was an amazing movie, and moving. That being said, here are my latest reviews:

Spotlight 8/10

The Revenant 10/10

Hail Caesar! (2016) - A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.

Many cool segments that don't quite come together. 3/5

THE BRONZE

5 out of 5 stars

Brilliant acting by one of the Big Bang Theory stars.

Very funny movie, but also with powerful drama mixed in.

Original plot, definitely not a storyline we've seen before.

Raunchy from start to finish, but not overdone like Dirty Grandpa.

And yes, the one scene that's been talked about for years lived up to the hype.

See this movie!!!

They've been talking about this a little on Stern (the movie's an advertiser). I'm assuming "the one scene that's been talked about for years" is the sex scene?

Yup. I don't want to say much for those who haven't seen it, but it was something. And parts of the scene were quite funny, which I'm certain they were meant to be. They used a Cirque du Soleil performer to be Melissa's doppelgänger.

Since I more or less binge-watched like a 13-hour movie, I'll rate Marvel's Daredevil, season 2. 7.5/10. Could easily have been higher but there were some strange bumps in the story that felt really unnecessary, given the overall quality. All in all, loved both seasons. Charlie Cox is fantastic.

I liked it better than "Man of Steel" and certainly better than any Marvel movie out there, but then again I like "dark" takes on fluffy comic book fare...
This movie is dark and gloomy as fuck...
I approve and can't wait for the 30 minute longer R-rated cut on Blu... Fuck the critics!

I watched The Mirror shortly after watching Stalker. Stalker was Age of Ultron compared to the The Mirror, I'd say!

Speaking of Age of Ultron, I finally got around to watching that last week, along with Ant-man and I liked them both quite a bit. AoU was defintely cluttered and not as fun as Avengers (as everyone in the world has said already, i guess) but, diminishing returns aside, I still thought it was good fun and I continue to enjoy those movies.

I don't usually do foreign films, but this one was well worth the subtitles.

I can see why it won so many awards, 5 out of 5 stars

DeNiro was over-the-top, but Lewis and Bernhard were excellent. A very good and original film. Dark, dark, dark, though. Will remind you of how twisted our world is.

Indeed, Age of Ultron was not great, but I enjoy all of Joss Whedon's efforts to some degree. I'm currently revisiting his Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series which is excellent. Once the mythos is established in season two, it really takes off until the very end.

As for Tarkovsky, I remember The Mirror ranking above Stalker on the last Sight and Sound movie poll so you're not alone in your opinion of the two films apparently. smile

ah, i think i butchered my analogy there. i was trying to say that stalker was (relatively) simple and comprehensible compared to the mirror, not that i thought one was better than the other! I wouldn't even want to attempt rating them, or saying one ought to be slotted over the other....only that stalker is structured more conventionally than the mirror (which isn't to say that stalker is the least bit conventional).

.

I went to see 10 Cloverfield Lane last night, and I liked it a lot. I think I would have likely enjoyed it more and certainly would have been more surprised if I hadn't known about the Cloverfield connection, but quibbles aside I thought it was pretty clever and overall good fun. 3.5/5.
