As of Feb 1, 2016

Microsoft, will no longer give you the option of upgradeing to Windows 10's. Instead, Microsoft is recommending you upgrade to Windows 10. What is the difference?

If a PC is set to install recommended updates automatically then Windows 10 will be downloaded and the installation could then start once the download is complete.

This is what you need to do.

1. Un-install KB 3035583. It is the update responsible for the Windows 10 notification.

2. Turn automatic updates off. Check for updates every second Tuesday of a month after 9:00 AM Pacific Time.

Windows 10 and its new web-browser the "Edge", are still a work in progress. Still, Win 10 is nothing but spyware. Windows 7 Pro computers can still be purchased until Nov. 2016.

Windows' 7 support ends, 2020. Window's 8.1 supports ends 2023

Microsoft's bullying tatics have been reprehensible. What Microsoft basically doing is tacking advantage of their customers.... many of whom may not be computer illiterate but are uninformed

the tricky was Mircosoft is trying to make you install Windows 10. If Microsoft were for the right thing, Windows 10's would stay an options and in the Optional update (Updates) catagory and clearly define as such.

What I do know...

The older a computer is (with Win 7 OS) the more likelyhood you may have issues with Windows 10.

If you don't see Windows' 10 options among recommend downloads yet... Microsoft is probably staggering its release. Even so, follow the directions above to be premeptive.

Do this, for now.

Windwos 10

In Windows 7, go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update. Click the Change settings link on the left.

Look for the Recommended updates entry and make sure it’s unchecked. Click OK.

Windows 8.1

In Windows 8.1 you can either follow the same steps listed above, or you can go through the PC Settings app. Go to Settings > Update and recovery > Windows update and select Choose how updates get installed. Uncheck the Recommended Updates box and click Apply.

Windows 10 will still appear as an available update, but it won’t be automatically installed now.

Finally, right-click on the Windows 10 update, and select Hide Update to make sure you don't install it by mistake.

I seldom install any of the updates listed over the years because I have an innate distrust of microsoft already. I did find that update in the ready to install list and I didn't install it.

How long before uninstalled updates go away?

A long time, they are still hyping a silverlight update, that was there when I got my computer 13 months ago and had been there 3 years on my previous machine.

I stopped using IE a few years ago. I'm doing firefox and opera now.

My desktop is nearly ten years old but my laptop is going on four years old.

I have to check to see if that update is on my old desktop before I forget.

It depends... Microsoft have different rules for Home, Pro and Enterprise customers. I'm a Win Pro.

I'd like to assume since Windows 10 is suppose to a "choice", once its un-installed KB 3035583 your are done. Microsoft has already said, they will be very aggresiive in pushing Windows 10 upgrade; don't be surprised if you don't see again amongst your Microsoft Updates.

As far a manually updating...

What I've done since Vista. I take the time to research recommended and optional updates. In most instances, the option to know more about an update can be found in the right field of the update box.

Sometimes Microsoft is vague... I then copy and past the update in search to get more info from the Geeks.

They have some update know in options that speak of Window 10... they'll be there to hell freezes over and I can skate.

1. Well we're not going to talk much about Old Windows because I know a few local companies that are still using Windows 98 & XP!

2. The Linux community are still divided because of the systemd controversy, hence why it's good to know Linux & BSD in order to have more operating systems (OSs) to choose from. But no matter what, getting away from Windows is still a wise decision.

And I still prefer a Linux distro to be 100% systemd free, damn it!

I'm going to have to get back on this. All of my moves have been preemptive. I think once you've upgraded than decide to return to our original OS, you may have to go into the registry to get rid of the toolbar pop-up. If you aren't comfortable with that, there's a 3rd party tool, I think that can block it.

microsoft is really bullying users with this 'update' and it's been a pain in the whatsit to keep it off my system.

and i notice the automatic updates keep pushing that KB3035583. gotta keep a sharp eye out for that baby, uninstall it right away if it sneaks by

By the way, I am now using OpenSUSE LEAP, I installed it recently, it's quite nice....

Maybe there should be a way to organise "installer gangs" in every city - people who will GO TO the houses of people like babynoz and get them started with Linux, for free, or maybe even a small amount of money..... does anyone like this idea?

I think that's a pretty good idea. I for one believe Linux users are going to have to come to terms with, the willingness to pay for somethings. Nothing outragious but damn reach in your pocket and give someone $20, $25, $40, or $50 bucks. If you go to Best Buy, the charge 100 and some change to look at your computer.

I know I sometimes buy a Linux mag here which has distros on the coverdisc, it used to cost a 100 bucks and has now gone up to 120 - how much of that goes to the creators of the distributions, I don't know......I do hope it's some.

Why don't you actually try and get that organised in YOUR city, where you live? Maybe there'a Linux user group there whose members are willing to be the "gangs"?
