The greatest part of the movie for me, was watching the pure joy on my 14 year-olds face, him almost boucing out of his seat in excitement when the opening score started. Usually with movies, I can't get him to be quiet. He is my own personal Mystery Science 3000 commentator (and yes, a lot of times what he says is quite funny, but dang it, I want to hear the movie!). And this happens with ALL movies, except this one. He was completely focused on the movie, eyes shining, just pure joy. I'll have to go watch the movie again, because I think I watched him more than the movie because it was just awesome to him so happy.

That's awesome!

boxoffice mojo is saying it has made a Billion world wide. beating JW by one day (and without china).

I still do not think it will beat Avatar's 2.7 Billion WW, but who knows. (and no way it will top all time adjusted)

Avatar made WHAT??? eek The world we live in... disbelief

2.788 Billion! silly and i have not seen it!

I think it was mostly down to good timing. Avatar came out around the time 3D was getting it's biggest push and this was advertised as being something groundbreaking. The movie was ok, the special effects are fantastic though. And that's how it was marketed. And it worked. I don't think part 2 (or part 3 or 4 for that matter) will make even half as much. Unless James Cameron uses another "new" gimmick to market it off. Avatar VR, perhaps?

I think in one of the Phantom Menace extra making of docs on the DVD Bul-ray, someone asked Lucas about how or why some movies (talking about Titanic) just do so much better. And I forget what he said but it was something like that... that you never know how it will connect.

And I agree it was said to be such a WOW moment akin to when Dorthy got to the Land of OZ and it went from black and white to color!

After 2 viewing and reading the ebook, I don't like anything about it.

You don't get a chance to know anyone, despite great effects the Starkiller attack was a boring mess, Poe and Finn's acting and dialogue were horrible, Solo's introduction was childish slapstick with the tentacles, the 1st Order didn't instill any fear, Kylo was interesting but so underdeveloped.

Ren was ok. Carrie Fisher looks bad and they should have used cgi instead.

Poe and Finn were really horrible. sad

My least favorite SW film.

It's meant as a trilogy though right? Maybe we should look at it as more of a first act rather than a complete movie? Having said that, I really enjoyed it. My third favourite of the saga.

True and hopefully Ep. 8 will turn my opinion around.

Going to see it for the 9th time tonight. I still can't make it very far in the novel because I'm distracted by repeat viewings and online discussion of the movie. Though the first 6 chapters were very good.

The film could have benefited from a few tiny bits in the book.

After they escape in the TIE Poe is very forceful that he wants to inflict damage on the Finalizer.

You get a greater sense of his character. Would have only added 30 seconds to the film.

Going back for a 9th portion?!

This is great news about Episode VIII imo.

Yeah, Snoke was a bit disappointing. He seems a bit too Gollum-like. I bet that despite his big projection of himself, he's only like 4 inches tall. razz

Star Wars seems to be on track to pass Jurassic World before the new year. (but even if it falls short by then the Box Office tally still goes on its 2015 ranking.)

But given that back in the Spring I got in a debate with people that insisted that Age of Ultron would be the top movie of 2015... it will be fun to see TFA actually pull off #1 in 2 weeks!

also with the $600K million may well push the annual total box office past the $11 Billion mark.

Yeah, there's no defending Starkiller base. With all the reused ideas, that was the one they should have passed on.

Watched a making of doc of Episode 3 where George Lucas said the films are not intended to be science fiction. They are fantasy films. So things aren't meant to be judged by our world's scientific laws. That might explain some of the more outlandish aspects of the films. Or maybe it was just George Lucas covering his own tracks. smile
Personally though, that kind of thing doesn't bother me. If I'm going to watch a movie where people have all this cool technology and yet the most badass ones fight with laser swords, of all things, then I'm ok with explosions being visible from lightyears away. Its just a movie. It doesn't have to make 100% sense.

yeah i agree and I am fine with communication across light years being instant and crossing the galaxy in a few minutes but this bugs me...

I have no problems with suspending my disbeliefs, So I have no problem with the idea of the Galactic Empire building moon sized battle stations that can destroy a planet but I have to draw the line at the idea of amoveable planet that sucks up the energy of stars to destroy entire systems. SMH

yeah that was not clear to me how it moved... the death star seems to have actually had hyperdrive... (as according to Tarkin it was the same day as Kenobi's death)

it is funny how we allow for some things but not others.

I'd have to watch again, but they described Starkiller as having a "hyperdrive" something built into the planet. I've never been bothered by the science of Star Wars not being realistic...I just think the "planet sized weapon" has more than run its course. Maybe if they would have just disabled the weapon instead of giving us the obligatory shot of rebel ships flying away from the planet sized explosion, it would have been better. Either way...overall, I still love TFA!!!

I've seen the movie 9 times. The blast from the weapon was hyperdrive or lightspeed enabled but it wasn't mentioned if the planet was mobile, or how they were able to charge the weapon twice if it has to drain the entire sun.

Maybe after its charged once it doesnt need to be charged again, at least not for a long time. They blew up a few planets with it but after its destroyed there was still a huge star thing left behind. So it would have had a few more good shots left.

Looks like it will fall short of Avatar's $2.8B world wide (unless there is some trickery).

it is now at $1.5B and I predict that it will do 350Million in China and another 400 to 500Million world wide on top of that for a total of 1.4 Billion about 400Million short.

So if they want the top spot they may need to release an extended cut. Which from the looks of it can be done. Given that both Avatar and Titanic had a 2nd release it seems to be a fair trick. (in fact half of the current top 10 US movies have benefited from some form of 2nd or special release.)

With the DVD/BR said to be coming in April (which i think is a little bit early) I can see them having a re-release in Nov with additional footage. (if not in March)

but even then 400Million is a lot to make on such a relase.
