I read somewhere that the actors playing the Stormtroopers in that scene were big celebrities. And the Stormtrooper who Rey mind controls was played by Daniel Craig. Weird if it's true. [Edited 12/20/15 16:52pm]
That bit is true. Daniel is one of my local villagers and he mentioned the bit he did.

Could we see the story take a full loop, that Plagueis created Anakin to fool the Jedi into thinking they had the one who would bring balance to the force, but he didn't forsee Anakin having offspring who would actually bring balance to the force. Maybe Rey is the final piece.

I was also thinking along the lines of "Dune". Not sure if anyone here knows that story, but the Chosen One in Dune came one generation early...and screwed everything up. It was up to his kids to fix it, and their offspring to continue the Golden Path. Lucas swiped a few things from Dune for Ep IV...I wonder... Make it so, Number One... |

Did you know that Yoda and Obi-Wan speak during Rey's vision after she touches the lightsaber? Obi-Wan was voiced by both Alec Guiness saying "Rey" (cut from the Don't be Afraid" line he says to R2 in ANH) and Ewan McGregor.

I must listen out for that when I go see it again. That's pretty cool though. I wonder if it would be out of the question for Ewan McGregor to appear as a ghost in episode 8?
There's a rumor that Hayden Christensen will pe playing the ghost of Anakin in Episode VIII. As you can imagine, the original trilogy purists are disgusted.
I wouldn't mind that. He could be a good actor. He had some awful dialogue in Ep 2 and 3 that even de Niro and pacino would have struggled with. I liked the prequels though. Not as much as the originals but I liked them. But even if I didn't, there's no point in pretending that they didn't happen. I'd rather see him play Darth Vader in Rogue One though. It would be a crime if they didn't use that character in that movie. |

This film is bad in the sense that it is hardly a film at all. It has no structure, no dialogue, no screenplay, a threadbare story, but one that is not told because of non-existent direction, etc. It continues where the original left off, and just notches off plot elements one by one without any urge to tell a story, or develop characters, relationships, etc. The makers probably conceived this as a filler between numbers one and three and didn't bother with it. Of course, that's all right. I don't have any problem with that. But what really does disturb me is the high praise meted out to this "film" from almost every quarter – from viewers and critics alike. On this board it's being rated as the 17th best movie of all time. I've consulted quite a few film guides, and they all tag maximum, or near maximum, stars to this film. Even more bizarrely, they consider it to be the best of the series, and in my mind it's clearly the worst. What is going on? Of course, it's not difficult to see why this film is idolized. The first film was both good and a milestone. Not great, but it was the perfect statement for an age. It was a fairy tale that was confused as science fiction. The "Force" embodied morality, even religion, for the space age. It is set in the distant past and therefore pertains to origins rather than where technology is going. Spaceships and laser guns are just the backdrop, and have nothing to do with the story or the subject matter. When this film appeared in the middle of the crisis-ridden seventies, it really must have been a beacon of "new hope". And to put the ground-breaking special effects into its proper context, they symbolized optimism. There is no doubt that the effects served the story well, but they served even better the mood of the age. And with all this going, Star Wars rightly became a tremendous hit, and the focus of fanatic devotion. It was to be expected that any sequel would have been gobbled up by the fan base, as long as it didn't spoil the original. Empire doesn't spoil the original. It not only continues the war between good and evil, it does so with more spectacle, more aplomb, more special effects. When people say they like Empire, what I think they really mean is that thy like Star Wars so much that they are thrilled that it has a new and glossy wrapping. Because Empire is nothing but embellishment. They're not judging the film itself. The ideal situation would have been if Star Wars remained as a standalone fairy tale. Fairy tales end, and they leave us with the aura of "happily ever after". They don't go on and on and become sagas, and if they did that would totally destroy the aura. Empire is the first mistaken step towards saga, and that is why it quickly finds itself out of its depth. There is nothing else to be told, and that's why the film is so bad. One boring battle joined to another boring battle, and in between we have cardboard characters mouthing atrocious dialogue that serves no purpose whatsoever. The strain tells. Everybody is straining to do something when there is nothing to do. The third film, The Return of the Jedi, redeems itself by trying to finish a story. The prequels are interesting because they are filling in the background. But Empire is caught in no man's land. It is bad, and it should be exposed as such. All this pretending isn't healthy, I don't think.

I personally would love to see no ghosts at all, like it was in the original Star Wars the ghosts howwever should remain at the age when they died. Obi Wan ghost was not Ewan McGregor but Sir Alec. so Anakins ghost should be Sebastian Shaw and no one else. Has anyone tried unplugging the United States and plugging it back in? |

as for who is Rey and where she's coming from.. so she manages to use the Force after just a few hours/days what Luke took months and years of training (and that is not a plothole like some claim, because we do not know her background yet) but obviously she has more Force powers than Luke or anyone else we've come to know... the explanation, obviously her powers are coming from fathers AND mothers side....
so....
.....why can nobody see the pink elephant in the room? Rey is the incestous lovechild from Leia and Luke. also explains perfectly why Han ran for the hills years ago
j/k
she kicked major ass though

Alec Guiness is dead though, right? so if they want to have the character in a future film, Ewan McGregor would be the next best thing. Same goes for having Hayden Christensen play Anakin. I'm with you though, I would rather they move ahead with the new cast and leave the ghosts out of it BUT if they do decide to use Anakin or Obi-Wan, then they should use Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. But during Rogue One, Darth Vader will be alive because it's set before A New Hope so I think Hayden Christensen should reprise his role in the suit and have James Earl Jones do the voice. |

I could live with that, because under the mask we can't see his mimic and acting, hehe (I know I'm being mean now)
as for Guiness or Shaw, just make them CGI. and let Daniel Craig & Co do the motion capture

Has anyone made a list of the elements that are sort of remixed from Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back within the new movie?
For example the design of the set for the Resistance control room (where they monitor battles) is shot and setup like the control room on Hoth where Leia dwelled with the other leaders.
The gantry catwalk and open chasm on the Starkiller base (Starkiller is a throwback to an early draft of Star Wars before 1977) are reminiscent of the setpiece in Cloud City.
The first use of the millenium falcon with it's turret defense guns repeats shots and the mood of the original TIE fighter attack on it in Star Wars.

From what I've heard, Christensen is coming back as Vader. in the suit, not as Anakin.
BUT . . . if Christensen and McGregor were to come back as Force Ghosts or visions, they'd be playing characters who are filled with regret for the past. That would seem appropriate to me.
The Force Ghosts I'd want to see most are Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn.

I really liked it. There's just something about Star Wars, I guess... Very funny, too. I thought the last scene was great. Having said that, the movie is so close to the originals, it's almost ridiculous at times. And I really have a problem with the bad guy being Han Solo's and Leia's son... If you do such a storyline, it needs to be told properly, we need to see it. Otherwise, it just doesn't resonate emotionally the way it should. There's just no context. The only issue I have with the movie is that JJ could have taken 5 minutes and actually explained how the New Republic, The First Order and The Resistance were in relation to each other cause I left the theatre scratching my head as to why The Resistance wasn't just part of The New Republic's military. Having to go online and google to figure this out is not good story telling.

Can I make you a recommendation? Watch them in the following order: ep 4, 5, then 1, 2, 3 then 6. There's also what's called "machete order" which is the same as the above, but skipping episode 1 entirely. This allows you to see them in a fun order that preserves most spoilers, starts with release date order with the focus on Luke, then goes to the backstory of Darth Vader before finishing up with the end of Luke's journey.
I'll rewatch The Star Wars Saga in any order as long as Episode 1: TPM is no longer part of the vocabulary.
It's just sooo cool to hate on Episode 1; you've all been groomed and conditioned well. Episode 1 is a masterpiece and a visual marvel. Galaxies beyond Star Wars:the Abomination, oh excuse me, The Force Awakens. |

not in a long shot. even if you forget the trade federation and Jar Jar, it's an optical over the top kitsch festival. every single shot screams "CGI!!! CGI!!! CGI!!!" and oh-so-fantastic-out-of-this-world miniature models. "hey look, I'm a computer! I can do bright and shiny unrealistic colors, weird camera angles and tricky movements! I'm almost as good as a computer game! " it already looks sooooo dated as standalone movie that could have worked fine, but the visuals from Ep1-3 just seem from another galaxy. yet SW7 has the classic look once again. it looks as real as a sci fi movie can. partially I agree, curiosity is out of hand for many things in Ep7 but on the other hand in SW77 we also didn't know about the background of the Empire yet (for 22 more years!), just a few hints is all we got. clone wars? just a short mention. the backgound of the characters? not layed out yet. the audience was getting thrown in the center of action into a foreign galaxy full of unknown mysteries, trying to figure everything out. that was a major part of the old magic in '77
sure, by know we have this big SW universe grown around us, and I understand, I also want to know all the details and gaps filled right away. and I'm sure we will get that in Ep8+9
Plus I thought the whole Supreme Leader Snoke was pretty lame
actually I already took a bet, that in Ep 9 he will be revealed to be just a few inches tall, one yard maximum

Rey! So I saw it a gain and I was thinking all the sneaking around was like Ben in ANH. Adding fuel to the fire that she is a Kenobi. Then I saw a story that others have same theory.
But some say that because the saber called to her she must be a Skywalker or even both!
But the saber was in Ben's possession for 20 years... so I think that the idea that Ben had a daughter is not very likely.
as to the 3D issue... i agree it is not worth it... it wa okay a time or two but mostly it was a distraction. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

Interesting. But Snoke could also be Darth Sidious reincarnate.
Check out the storyline for Dark Empire , a comic series that was released in the early 90's. In it, Palpatine finds a way to survive using a clone body, and eventually turns Luke to the Dark Side. Leia essentially becomes a Jedi and saves Luke.

HELP!
What happend to Fin's gun? While at Maz Kanata's castle Fin decides to lave and Han tells him to keep his blaster... but moments later when Maz gives him Luke's saber he says "I need a weapon" and she said "you have one..." so where is the blaster? was it seen being taken or something? Then later on D'Qar he seems to have the blaster Han gave him again?
Also wookieepedia says that D'qar is an outer rim world...making Fin's attempt to get to the outer rim pointless.
Also! Maz and han and the rest were on Tajodana a mid rim world... but they still see the destruction of the Hosnian system? NO WAY! they would be light years away! (of cource that never seemed to be an issue with star wars) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

I saw the film with somebody who didn't even recognize the Milennium Falcon....the things I put up with,
I had my fears that Disney would screw up but I guess JJ can be trusted to not let that happen. The film was better than I expected although dialogue in these kinds of films always leaves a lot to be desired. I do appreciate the humorous content though.
I don't believe that Rey is a Solo. Han did not seem to recognize her or have any kind of knowing look when she said where she was from. There's nothing that indicates any reason why the Solos would have dropped her off and left her the way she was left. The clues seem to point to Luke but who was his babymama? In the books he had a love interest but not in the movies.
At first I thought she might be a twin of Kylo like in the storyline of Jacen and Jaina found in the books but they said they aren't following any of the other story lines out there.
I think she is either a Skywalker or a Kenobi based on the visions she had and what Maz Kanata said. Perhaps it will unfold like Luke didn't know he had a daugher and the mom intended to come back to Jakku for her but got killed instead?
Obi Wan had a romance with some Queen in Clone Wars whose name I forget but they don't seem to be incorporating those storylines either. I hope they don't depart too much from what's already out there...that would suck. I would appreciate some continuity.
Random thoughts......
~I thought that Fin's character was just a tad sterotypical but I don't think that will be a problem going forward because I think they will continue to develop him. After all, the guy was programmed clone so it stands to reason he would have a ways to go. I can laugh about it but he was kinda Jar jar like though. He damn sure ain't no Billy Dee Williams...
~Why is eveybody dressed like they shop at the Gap?
~If Rey was descended from Palpatine she would have killed Kylo.
~Mark Hamill looks like a recovering alcoholic.
~Not crazy about the new droid. He acts too much like a Disney dog.
~Luke did understand R2 in previous films.
~The visuals were great.
~Why comes nobody told Kylo that Vader eventually came back from the dark side?
~I didn't care for Snoke. It would have been better if he turned out to be Darth Sidious' master.
Overall it was heap big fun. I give 7/10 because some of the dialogue was too corny and they didn't provide enough continuity. We can have mystery and still have continuity.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |
