Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Discussions for those that have seen it (spoiler alert)

Looks like the main thread is locked, maybe to avoid spoilers for those that have not seen it yet. But obviously, many of us have seen it in the last few days and want to discuss, so I thought the safest way is to have a spoiler alert thread.

Now, there is one burning topic for everyone that has seen it. Why did JJ do that to HIM???????????

.

The movie was awesome. J.J. Abrams did a GREAT job. The family story and soap opera aspects there. Special effects are awesomely ramped up. Everything looks great and great casting for the bad guy. Adam Driver did it proper.

It wasn't perfect...nothing g is. But I was impressed.

Good Job J.J. !!!!

Empire > Hope > Sith > Force > Phantom > Jedi > Clones

It was worth the 3 year wait. I'm going back Saturday and Sunday.

Absolutely brilliant. I loved it but I couldn't help but shed a tear or two at THAT part. I know it makes Kylo Ren seem like even more of a bastard but I didn't like it. Speaking of Kylo Ren, I thought he was good but there was something about him that reminded me of Hayden Christiansen from episode 3.

My number one question walking out of the theater...who the hell is Rey? Where does she REALLY come from? I have an idea, but my idea just doesnt make sense (to me). Countdown is on for Episode VIII...

I think that's very deliberate.

And I adore Adam Driver. He did not disappoiont.

Although am I the only one who thinks they made Kylo Ren look a lot like Snape? lol. Maybe my multi-nerdiness showing through...

I have a feeling that Rey is Luke's daughter.

Yeah me too. It was implied somewhat but it could also be misdirection. I still think she's Lukes offspring though. Some fans are still insisting she is a Solo. LOL!

Overall I liked the movie. It was not perfect and had many plot holes. I didn't like or buy that Luke bailed on everyone and went into hiding. Also if Rey is his then how could he just drop her off with some mean dude? That's not the Luke we know. The're gonna have to explain that better. Maybe they will in Ep VIII.

.

My biggest problem is that everything happened too fast and it felt rushed by the end. They did too much in too little time. Many scenes were cut and I wonder if those scenes might have explained some things better. The movie would have benefited with another extra 20min imo.

I hope to go see it again in the next week or so before I can say where I rank this one with the rest. Right now with my Star Wars buzz on I put this in the top 4.

.

What I do find funny is that I see so many similarities with Star Wars fans and Prince fans. We have the fans that love to hate no matter what and others who will defend it even when it is bad. Very passonate fans to say the least. LOL!

I thought Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were fantastic.

Things loved:

That Kylo Ren has anger management and daddy issues. Nice that he wasn't cast to be another Vader.

Overall feel was spot on.

The humour was great, particularly Han and Chewie.

Makes me want Ep 8 even more.

Build up and use of force powers.

Things I didn't like:

Far too similar plot to Ep 4.

Not enough time or backstory to Han and Leia.

Missed opportunity.....Han's last line of the film should have been (when he had his hand on Kylos face)....'I love you'......zing...on goes the lightsaber.....Kylo says....'I know.'

Rey can't be a random, and they didn't explain why Leia and Rey embraced when Rey arrived back at the base at the end. They hadn't let at that point, but they clearly acted like they knew each other.

If I were to guess, I would say Rey is Ben's sister.

If you look at her dream sequence we saw:

Then the Knights of Ren looking like they had finished a job (wiping out Lukes Jedi Academy?)

Her being abandoned on Jakku.

Luke, possibly feeding him location co-ordinates into R2.

All of it is historic. Is it as simple as the lightsaber showed her that Kylo turned bad, she was then abandoned/hidden (by Leia) but Luke has left a trail for her to follow when The Force awakens in her?

Yeah, I know what you mean about it feeling rushed in places but at least it didn't drag on and on like the prequels. And I say that as someone who liked episode 3 but sometimes I was like "alright get on with it for Christ sakes" LOL.

I ruined my 3D glasses when He died... It was like watching my father get killed. Well, what I imagine what it would be like to see my father get killed...

I'm still thinking that Rey is a Solo...but it doesnt make sense that Han and Leia didnt tell her.

-

Why would Leia and the rest of the Resistance send Rey, a girl none of them know...just a scavenger from Jakku...to find Luke Skywalker, the most important mofo in the galaxy, by herself? Did Luke tell Han and Leia not to tell Rey who she is, no matter what? I dunno...makes more sense that she's Luke's daughter...but that doesnt make sense either. If Luke had a daughter, why would he let her be abandoned...alone, living in squalor...simply because he failed training Ben Solo? Wouldnt he take her with him into exile, to protect and possibly train her himself? Doesnt he have a history and understanding of how hard it is to train a Jedi who is already grown and set in their ways (like he was when Yoda struggled to train him)? Again...WHO THE HELL IS REY?!?!

If you want to avoid crowds see an early 3d matinee. If you want to have a great experience with lots of Star Wars fans go to a 2d nighttime showing this weekend. The reactions from other fans throughout the movie were priceless.

For a long time. Kasdan knew it because he wanted to die on the Falcon in Jedi.

I was afraid it was coming. The second he stepped on the bridge I knew it was over.

My first impression walking out . . .

Disney lied.

The BenRen storyline is lifted straight from certain Expanded Universe novels, where Han and Leia have a son, Jacen Solo, who turns to the Dark Side. He has a twin sister in the books.

And, I felt something was happening to Han before I even walked in. He finally got a chance to kill off one of his most beloved characters.

Some loose ends:

- WHO WAS MAX VON SNYDOW'S CHARACTER?

- Who was Ridley's family?

- Are the Knights Of Ren Luke's fallen padawans?

- Does Finn have Jedi powers, or not?

- Rey's first grasp of the saber seemed lifted straight out of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Yeah it's really hard to tell. Maybe she has no Skywalker blood at all? If she is Lukes then it don't make sense for the reasons we mentioned about him abandoning her. The Solo theory is the same way. You'd think Han and Leia would know if they had a daughter. She could have just been a young girl very strong with the Force who survived the slaughter of Lukes attempt at reviving the Jedi Order.

.

The thing that still has me thinking she is Lukes offspring is the way Anakin's lightsaber was calling to her and gave her that flashback. Also after Finn went down in the fight with Kylo Ren it was Rey who the saber flew to. Then this is an excerpt from the book:

.

Taken aback, he whirled-to see the weapon land in the hand of a girl standing by a tree. Rey appeared equally shocked that her reach for the device had exceeded his. She gazed down at the weapon now resting in her grip.

"It is you," Ren murmured.

His words unsettled her: Not for the first time, he seemed to know more about her than she did about herself.

.

Interesting Kylo knows who she is. Sister? Cousin? I will guess he's been jealous of her for awhile regardless who she is.

Some loose ends:

- WHO WAS MAX VON SNYDOW'S CHARACTER? "Though Lor San Tekka is not Force-sensitive, he has witnessed its power firsthand. During the dark times of Emperor Palpatine's rule, San Tekka was a follower of the Church of the Force. This underground faith was made up of loosely affiliated worshippers of the Jedi ideals, who steadfastly believed that one day their light would return to the galaxy." That was taken from the Visual Dictionary book.
.
- Who was Ridley's family? We don't know yet.

- Are the Knights Of Ren Luke's fallen padawans? Not explained. Assuming it's a group of Snokes baddies to wipe out Lukes attempt at bringing back the Jedi Order.

- Does Finn have Jedi powers, or not? No

- Rey's first grasp of the saber seemed lifted straight out of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Yup. My thoughts exactly. She's a Skywalker niece/daughter, the dream sequence totally points to that.

This movie sucked! If you want "Star Wars" by a committee....if you want fan fiction on the big screen...if you want a facsimilie of Star Wars....then this is the movie.

No soul...just a product designed to appeal to whatever the f--- this generation is called.

Sooooo disappointing.

I thought that possiby she is a Skywalker and he used Jedi mind tricks to make them forget about her and he also was doing the same to R2 until the time was right.

one thing that got to me was how did Rey hold her own against Kylo? But I guess it is that kylo has not really had any lightsaber training? but he can freeze a laser bolt? Weird--is that a totally NEW power or was it in one of the EU? oh and she was skilled with the staff so she had some idea how to fight.

(also was the way Rey talked about Luke and the Jedi kind of a nod to the EU now being non-canon? like they are just stories as I am sure there would be embellishments on Luke and his exploits?)

I did like the parces bit but the starkiller base was a bit too derivative... and i think there were a few other references to the OT as well.

but over all it did strike a good balance.

the build up to get to Luke was too much for way too little... and all the fuss about having to grow a beard? was that just for a diversion?

I did predict that it would be rey and not fin that was the force user! for one there is that commercial... and JJ loves a misdirect... and a few other things as well...

the map was a little silly for me... and it was way too much like the plans in R2 in Star Wars...

as to Han... i knew that was the end of him... i was hoping for a overly cheesy line from him of "No, I am your father!" but i guess not. But I figured it was the end as I knew there was a fight in the woods and that Han wanted to die in Jedi... (and yes i did read he died in a spoiler but i also read that Luke and Chewie died too...)
