Your favorite movie? (Inspired by sexton's "Rate The Last Movie You Watched"!)

Wow. Haven't clicked the old "Start new topic" button in a long time.

If you'd care to, please share with us your favorite film! It would be interesting if you told us why it's your favorite. Don't be afraid to be verbose - I will read it! If you'd like to share more than one favorite, please do so!

The Godfather.

Hands down the best movie ever made in Hollywood history. The acting was superior, the whole entire cast was perfect for what was trying to be achieved. The storyline itself is like a magnet...I've watched the movie COUNTLESS times and each time I learn or see something new that I hadn't noticed before. People love to label it a "violent mafioso" movie, while I don't quite see it that way. Yes it's a movie that features violence and obviously deals with the mafia but if you dig deeper into the craft of the plot, multiple themes are presented...that of loyalty, family, friendship, respect, epiphanies, growth and strategic thinking. Literally all of the elements that we as individuals deal with from time to time in general. thumbs up!

Thank you for your well-considered answer! Godfather I & II are favorites of many people I admire, so I really should get around to watching them. redface

nod Whenever you get the chance, watch it, even if it's just one time. The sequel, The Godfather II, was, in a way, superior to the first one. I enjoy that one significantly as well. You get even more of what the first one presented but this film focused more on the themes of simply, control and power. nod thumbs up!

I don't know if I'm able to pick a favourite movie. My "favourite" seems to change on a daily basis. But I'll name a few which always ranks up there.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
I know it may seem a strange choice for a girl my age, and to be honest, I wouldn't have even given it a chance a few years ago. I lost a bet and had to watch the whole "Dollars" trilogy with my bf (now ex). I've never been happier to lose a bet. Three absolutely brilliant films but it's this one which stands out. Properly epic, expertly shot and Clint Eastwood's defining role. The perfect western.

Blade Runner.
Again, odd choice for a 25 year old girl, I came across this the same way as mentioned above. I haven't seen the "final cut" yet, just the original and directors cut, but I really love this movie. If I'm honest, I'll watch anything with Harrison Ford, but the fact he's in this doesn't mean I'm in any way biased. Best sci to film ever? I'd say so.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I was about 4 or 5 years old the first time I saw this and I can honestly say that no other film has had a bigger impact on my life. Some of you on the org might know I'm bisexual, well the first girl I ever had a crush on was Susan Sarandon, because of this movie. I fell in love with Frank-N-Furter and the ending still makes me cry to this day. In my opinion, it easily has the best soundtrack this side of Purple Rain and in Tim Curry, the absolute best looking man in drag you'll ever see.

There are LOADS of other movies I consider among my favourites but these 3 always stick in my mind.

Yes, it seems like a lot of people slightly prefer II to I.

If I do ever get around to watching it, I think it's going to seem very familiar. They constantly reference it on Stern (and I haven't missed a minute of Howard in almost nine years!).

Hi, EmmaMcG! wave I'm assuming you're British ("properly epic")?

Have you ever seen Unforgiven? That's my favorite Clint. Are you aware there's apparently a Blade Runner sequel in the works? Did you know that Rocky Horror features in a key scene in The Perks of Being a Wallflower?

Another all time favorite of mine is Rocky. I just can't get enough of the Rocky franchise (minus the installments after Rocky IV). I'm a life long Stallone fan and I just love the story of Rocky Balboa and how his character evolved. I especially love how Balboa and Apollo Creed went from fierce components to loyal friends. I've said it before on here and I'll say it again, Stallone shouldn't had killed Apollo off in Rocky IV. I believe much more could had been done with that character and he eliminated him too soon. Why didn't Rocky throw in that damn towel!!!????? pissed But oh well, perhaps in a way, it will be made up for with this new movie coming out next week, "Creed", which Rocky will be training Apollo's son. It will be interesting to see this aspect coming from another director/writer point of view other than Stallone. I'm definitely going to see it next week, can't wait!!! thumbs up!

Nah, I'm not British. I'm Irish.
Haven't seen Unforgiven yet but it's on my list.
Yeah, can't wait for the Blade Runner sequel. It will probably be awful, but fingers crossed. Like I said, I'll watch anything with Harrison Ford.

Stallone getting Rocky made (and its success and acclaim) was quite the underdog story in itself, no? I think I saw it maybe when it originally came out (or maybe it was a little later). Either way, long time ago!

I actually love the Rocky films too. Apart from Rocky V... That didn't interest me at all... The sixth one wad really good as well I thought. I always cry when I watch them. They're all really emotional films..

I spent some time in Dublin, in 1987. Took a day trip to Glendalough, too. Had a fine time!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a fairly acclaimed film, based on a (YA?) novel. I found some of it a little melodramatic, but I recall the message as being a good one:

So tough to pick one. But it's got to be Woody Allen. One of these:

My signature, below, is taken from the last. Will try and write more about these when I have more time!

...Just noticed the last poster does not have the original, English title (which is Deconstructing Harry).

All of the rest involve comedy to at least some degree.

Whatever Works is great. Having Larry David in it made it seem like a feature length episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly would also be on top of my list. The title alone is great! And Eli Wallach as Tuco steals the show.
Another favorite is Life of Brian. People were shouting blasphemy! But I always figured the Pythons weren't making fun of Jesus, but of people who don't think for themselves. Like that scene where Brian stands in the window trying to tell the crowd they are all individuals.
And of course Pulp Fiction. If there's anyone who can take the place of the late great Sergio Leone, it's Tarantino. I'm looking forward to his new western.

I read a biography of Sergio Leone by Christopher Frayling and it was screen writer Luciano Vincenzoni who dreamed the title.

And now that I'm here, I'd like to mention Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. The way David Lynch tells a story, you can watch a film ten or twenty times and you never really figure out what's going on.
And anyone who likes Bob Dylan should watch Masked and Anonymous. It's...strange. But fun.

A friend of mine keeps recommending Mullholland Drive to me. But I think what I've highlighted above is the reason I don't watch Lynch anymore.

I love Dylan and I've seen the trailer and clips from M&A, but I don't know if even I could slog my way through that. lol

You should, even if it's only because of the music. Dylan plays an old worn out rock star named Jack Fate who is contacted by a promotor played by John Goodman to do a benefit concert for war veterans in a country that can only be described as the Failed States of America. Lots of great actors: Val Kilmer, Penelope Cruz, Mickey Rourke.

Django Unchained was really good so I have high hopes for The Hateful Eight. Besides, Kurt Russell is another of my favourite actors. Which brings me to another one of my favourite films.

Escape from New York.
Along with Han Solo and Kyle Reese (from the first Terminator, not the new one), Snake Plisskin is my favourite onscreen hero of all time. I could go on all day about how cool he is, the eye patch, the voice, the attitude. But it's not just Kurt Russells performance that makes it special. The music is great. The setting has been ripped off in countless films since. Truly iconic.
