What's Your Favorite Book Store? I'm kinda diggin' this Barnes & Noble store...
Books on every topic. Friendly, knowledgeable booksellers. ... and comfy couches and a cafe that serves Starbucks' coffee!!! I've been several times... I've been to other stores... Borders, B.Dalton's, Russo's etc... but I always find myself goin' back to B&N's... I go to the library too, but they don't have couches and coffee. What store do you frequent? |

1. Borders
2. Barnes & Noble This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

People, people! Evil corporations and all that!
I don't like bookstores because I detest having to BUY books when I can just get them from the library for free. I mean, like, where is the sun?

Half Price Books.
Everything's, well, half-price or less. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

As far as bookstores near me now, I would pick Barnes & Noble.
HOWEVER, NO bookstore beats the Strand in NYC (the main store near Union Square). I LOOOVE that store! I could spend 10 years in there just browsing! http://www.strandbooks.com/aboutus/

i prefer stores with comic book or art sections (or both!) The B&N I go to has this Fantasy section that displays all the latest comic magazines... DC, Marvel, etc... Not really my bag though, but it's nice to see they cover every one's topic. |

The biggest [and therefor my favorite] bookstore I've been
in this far was a London branch of Waterstone's with many floors jam-packed with any and everything. I spent nearly all day there from the moment they opened their doors until 05:00 pm when I remembered my friends who I was supposed to get together with 5 hours earlier. Sometimes second-hand bookstores are nicer though, here in Holland in the larger cities you find a lot of those. I particularly like the ones that are in great vault like cellars and just go on for miles and miles. You never know what you're gonna find in there you just kind of stroll through them and see whatever you happen to run into. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

How big/powerful/wealthy/whatever can a corporation get before it becomes evil? Even a small, local business would be well-advised to operate as a corporation or LLC, if only to limit the liability of the owner(s). Where do we draw the line? Okay, enough legal/philosophical babbling from me. [Matt's standard disclaimer: While I am licensed to practice law in Indiana, this post is for discussion purposes only, is not legal advice, and creates no attorney-client relationship.] Anyway, my parents have a bookshelf that they bought at an independent bookstore's going-out-of-business sale. When the store opened, it had by far the largest selection in town (and free coffee, I think), and it was very successful. So what happened? About five years later, Borders opened a store in the same strip mall, and Barnes & Noble opened a store a few blocks away. The independent bookstore lasted only about one or two more years, unfortunately. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Around here the chains seem to have the market dominated, so I'll say Borders first and Barnes & Noble second. The two stores are very similar, but I give Borders the edge because their music selection is much better. Several local mom-and-pops for quaintness, localization and that "welcome home" feel.
Borders and Barnes & Noble's for breadth and buying power. And in Cambridge, Mass., there's a GREAT children's bookstore on Harvard Square that's a favorite. Unfortunately, I can't recall he name Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

It's the standard mindset of Santa Cruz - downtown there's a few corporate stores (Borders, Starbucks, Gap) and the students HATE them but they still exist unfortunately.
