 My Nan had a big ole black cat, Moonface was his name. My best buddy as a kid, he was something eles! stole chops frm the butcher & layed them very proudly down on the back door step 4 my Nan. Fought off burglars, had the postman under manners...etc etc.
This was in Notting Hill Gate in the 70's - 80's, everyone in the neighborhood knew him 
Black cats have a special place in my heart, there's a male who lives near me, gorgeous he is, thick sleek fur. . in actual fact black lions are real, however very rare. it is not genetically impossible for a lion to have a black pelt and they have been spotted and written about for centuries. probably targeted for hunting too. . even farther back, some believe that the so-called sphinx was once actually a crouching lion, before pharaoh khufu(?) khafre(?) had his face carved over the lion's face to impress the locals with his majesty and new religion. allegedly, khufu came across the ancient (weathered) lion statue buried up to its neck in sand and had the sand cleared away, then altered the statue to his own likeness .

Yeah, if there was any no doubt they were hunted 
The Sphinx is v.interesting. I have heard about that too, also there's the whole 'Horus on the horizon' thing & the Goddess Sekhmet connection too. Water damage shows it is much older than they've been letting on. Between the front paws/legs is a gateway according to some.
